Constructed vs Designated Stairs[edit]

While I'm sure everyone knows you can construct downstairs on undug ground, I just discovered that when you deconstruct those stairs the ground is un-damaged! In this case, I build granite up/down stairs on a claystone tile. Then I dug up stairs below that and mined out the area around the stairs (initial storage room in a new embark). Later I decided that I didn't want the stairs to be up/down stairs so I designated them for removal. When the stairs were removed, the ground was still undug. I'm putting in a set of down stairs now, but I'm tempted to remove them to see if the ground is still solid after they are built. --- Krenshala (talk) 04:08, 18 February 2014 (UTC)

Stairs and Cave Ins[edit]

Recent experimentation with deep, intentional cave-ins has led me to believe that full up/down stairs will resist cave-ins so long as there is more than one floor's worth of them. I will make more notes as I continue experimenting.

I am trying to drop a large (~20x20) plot of sand down 20 odd z levels to be closer to the magma. beneath the sand walls are one floor of open space and many floors of up/down stairs. Nshapter (talk)

Creatures falling through stairs[edit]

I've recently encountered a goblin invasion and before closing the main bridge, I've managed to trap one. Now, being an avid reader of the wiki I found this, and, moments later, created a pit that would lead into the 3x1 staircase that I built to access the lower levels.

The staircase is extensive (about 30 levels), so I thought the goblin would become minced meat as soon as he plummeted. I tracked the goblin in order to see the fruition of this plan. However, it would seem as he somehow navigated, unscathed, out of the staircase into a chamber and is now content in searching some exploratory tunnels.--Doktoro Reichard (talk) 07:35, 7 January 2014 (UTC)

As it turns out, a creature actually needs to be "falling". By falling I mean transitioning from the pit dump floor to an empty floor and then the staircase. Tested with some horses I had from my testing embark. They wouldn't fall down if a stair (whether it was a down or an up/down) existed right below the pit zone. Removing the stair proved deadly.

However, I also ordered for a up/down staircase to be built over Open Space. A dwarf that was deconstructing it while standing on it also met a untimely death, even though the tile below was a stair.--Doktoro Reichard (talk) 10:50, 7 January 2014 (UTC)
