Herbalists are dwarves with the plant gathering Template:L. They will gather from plants and bushes that are designated and harvest fruits and seeds.
Uses
Food Production
Herbalists are often used to help with food production in an early fortress as they do not require farm plots or other setup. This tactic works best in heavily forested areas, and is nearly worthless in badlands and deserts. While plant gathering is less efficient than Template:L and significantly less reliable, it also requires minimal space and provides a relatively immediate payoff in comparison.
Gathering Seeds
Herbalists can gather Template:L from plants to allow outdoor Template:L to be planted. For this reason, it is popular if not necessary early in a fort's existence if one wants to grow outdoor crops.
