The building designer skill is used to plan buildings before the actual construction can begin.

It affects anything created with the 'architecture' labor, which includes bridges, smelters, paved roads, screw pumps, windmills, waterwheels, supports, and trade depots. Dwarves that have high building designer skills can make masterpiece structures, which can give dwarves very happy thoughts from admiring the excellently designed buildings. Also, dismantling a masterwork structure will not cause a tantrum.

A relatively easy way to train a dwarf's architecture skill is to build a lot of supports and tear them down again. Note that building a support also requires masonry. If you don't want to involve a mason, you need to cancel the construction of the pillars one by one once they have been designed.
