This article is about an older version of DF.

A civilization is a nation, with settlements and a capital city. At the embark screen, you can select one of the controllable civilizations to play as. Without Template:L, these are all Template:L, but they may have different items available to start out.

Mountain Civilization (The Template:L)

Mountain civilizations build settlements on the edge of Template:L ranges. Their settlements are represented by Ω on the world map

Plains Civilization (The Template:L)

Plains civilizations build wooden towns in the lowlands. Their settlements are represented by +, *, , and # on the world map

Forest Civilization (The Template:L)

Forest civilizations build wooden towns in heavily forested areas. Their settlements are represented by î and on the world map

Evil Civilization (The Template:L)

They build towers, represented by П on the world map

Skulking Civilization (The Template:Ls)

Skulking civilizations populate Template:L, which are hidden unless discovered.
