Missions can be used in Fortress mode to interact with the outside world. They are created by pressing first c to view the Civilization/World Info screen, and then either pressing p to create a citizen recovery mission or pressing a to create an artifact recovery mission. In either case, select the desired citizen or artifact to be recovered and then press r to create a new mission. In the next screen, select a squad to be sent out on the mission. The dwarfs in the squad will automatically prepare themselves and leave the map's edge.

Pressing m on the Civilization/World Info screen will show a list of active missions. You can reassign squads and delete missions on this screen.

When a squad returns from a missions it is announced by "<squad name> has returned". A mission report will be viewable from the report menu. In the report, the path the squad took is traced on the map and the events that took place along the way are revealed.
