If you're looking for a easy spot to start playing DF in, here's my advice:

Magma Avoid Adds temptation to flood your fort with lava
Aquifer Avoid Usually above the rock you need to get at, and is hard to penetrate
Biome Temperate Get Something mild, not hot or cold. Avoid savannah to avoid elephants.
Wood Recommended Heavily Forested
Plants Recommended Plants are food, so pick a spot with some or lots
Flux Recommended having a flux layer is a good idea
Metal Cross your fingers there's lots of iron and other ores... especially if you get a flux layer
River Avoid Carp.
Brook Recommended Water.
Getting a warmer temperature will mean that your outdoor water source will not freeze over during the winter. Otherwise make sure to get an indoor supply ASAP on settling. --Mey 02:52, 5 May 2008 (EDT)
