It's used on cv:thread, but I can't seem to move it to a better title. I think it's because of the <s>accent</s> umlaut - is there any way you can change its name manually in the database? (This maintenance script should do the trick, but it requires a little setup and it might run into the same problem.) &mdash;<span style="color:#074">Lethosor</span> (<span style="color:#092">talk</span>) 19:17, 13 March 2014 (UTC)

Though the wiki software is supposed to handle double redirects, it appears to fail when the redirect is to a subsection of a page -- see calm, for instance. --Zzedar (talk) 03:40, 13 April 2013 (UTC)

::: If I remember correctly, Loci pointed that out, but the original discussion was archived. It's probably a problem with the cv: alias (as this revision on Fishing redirects correctly). -- 17:25, 13 April 2013 (UTC)

::::: This manual page seems to be relevant. I just tested this scenario on another wiki (1.20.2) and ran into the exact same situation (with a double redirect from page -> foo:page -> foo:page2 failing). This may be a problem with MediaWiki as opposed to this specific namespace scheme (although MediaWiki seems to discourage double redirects, according to Special:DoubleRedirects). I'll try testing on 1.20.3 next, but it probably produces the same result. -- 17:41, 13 April 2013 (UTC)

::::::: There are a few that work; milking does, for instance. Actually, I did some testing: making a dummy edit to the first redirect seems to fix the problem -- I deleted a space from wrestler, and now it works where it didn't before. However, null edits do not work. Update: this change fixed the trigger redirect.--Zzedar (talk) 17:54, 13 April 2013 (UTC)

A few problems with the rating script seem to have popped up with the new software (these are probably more related to User:Emi, but you seem to be more active at the moment):

Creature token page seems to be causing your server trouble
* <code>jsMsg()</code> now fades out after a few seconds, preventing the automatic tests from completing in a few cases

* Clicking a checkbox propagates up to the message box, causing it to fade out and preventing any further action (and showing it again with <code>$("#mw-notification-area").show()</code> doesn't work, because the text is cleared when it disappears).

The easiest solution here is probably to display the interface somewhere else, instead of using the notification system.

http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2012:Creature_token comes up with a completely blank (like, about:blank blank) for me and pretty much everyone else I've asked about it. I can get the contents by pulling them from google's cache, but the site itself seems to refuse to let you load it. From experience as a webhost, this generally means that the page has encountered a critical error in its scripting, which it will dump in the error log instead of reporting to the user, for security reasons. I would suggest scouring your error logs. Don't know why this particular page is causing issues. 74.67.17.69 07:23, 6 May 2014 (UTC)

Parser Functions
Probably a rendering time issue - the other versions load fine, but v0.31 takes the longest (I'm pretty sure the v0.34 page is the largest). Using action=raw also works. &mdash;<span style="color:#074">Lethosor</span> (<span style="color:#092">talk</span>) 10:43, 6 May 2014 (UTC)

Categorization by template
+
It appears that the TitleIsAlwaysKnown is the problem, presumably because it takes a lot of time to render on a large page like creature token. Unfortunately, this is the hook that makes links and searching work. I'll try making the extension skip section links, since they account for most of the links in that article and don't need to be handled at all. &mdash;<span style="color:#074">Lethosor</span> (<span style="color:#092">talk</span>) 19:48, 6 May 2014 (UTC)

The recent changes briefly made categorization by template work correctly. Then, another change broke it again. :Category:DF2012:Flying now includes every creature page, instead of properly determining flying status from the raws. This new breakage seemed to happen about the time you resolved the parser function bug (above). --Loci (talk) 20:48, 13 April 2013 (UTC)
+
All right, that seems to have worked. The render time is back down to 1.2 seconds, which is pretty good for such a long page. &mdash;<span style="color:#074">Lethosor</span> (<span style="color:#092">talk</span>) 20:11, 6 May 2014 (UTC)

It looks like $wgExtraRandompageSQL was removed in 1.19 (). The suggested option seems to be adding a hook, as shown here, but it's not clear if it can be defined outside of an extension (which might be easier). -- 01:37, 14 April 2013 (UTC)

:: I'm guessing this is because AutoRedirect takes more time to render links to pages that don't exist, since it checks every versioned namespace before determining that a page doesn't exist. == Complete set of tables of biome lifeforms ==
+
Back in 2012, DrSazar added the poorly-named [File:Sperm.jpg, a photograph of a sperm whale. At some point after May 2013 the photograph changed into an image of actual sperm, presumably drawn from wikimedia commons. The wiki software shouldn't be losing images, or replacing local images with reference images. It's not the only image that seems to be missing, either.--Loci (talk) 16:05, 16 November 2014 (UTC)

I have assembled a Word .doc containing a set of 5 tables for each of the 51 biomes (Creatures, Vermin, Grasses, Plants, Trees).
+
:Sperm.jpg is still on the servers (as is its thumbnail). Dyed_thread.png is also on the servers, but its thumbnail appears to be missing. I'll try rebuilding the image table to see if that fixes anything. &mdash;<span style="color:#074">Lethosor</span> (<span style="color:#092">talk</span>) 16:20, 16 November 2014 (UTC)
 +
::Dyed_thread.png has been fixed. I'm still not sure what's wrong with Sperm.jpg - it's stored on the server, but Mediawiki doesn't seem to be recognizing it. &mdash;<span style="color:#074">Lethosor</span> (<span style="color:#092">talk</span>) 16:28, 16 November 2014 (UTC)
 +
:::Mediawiki Commons has a history of being entirely dumb. I moved the page; I think it's possible that busting the thumbnails could theoretically fix it, but I'm not sure. --Briess (talk) 03:40, 17 November 2014 (UTC)

I did this for my own purposes, but thought it might be useful to the wiki biome pages.  I have *zero* experience with wiki editing.
+
Cloning the wiki
I wanted the tables to fit within a small vertical space for 'at a glance' viewing of what is native to a biome.  The tables are are set up as 4 columns with alpha sorted names.  Since in some biomes the list  can become long, I used a '<name> (3)' format to collapse '<name>, '<name Man', and 'Giant <name>' into a single line.
+
Hi Briess! lethosor directed me here from IRC.

The resulting set of 5 tables for each biome are all smaller than a single printed page.
+
Making the wiki available offline has been discussed before by many different people. Some even manage something almost useful. You've helped the situation by making the XML dumps available, however so much information in the wiki is locked behind templates that depend on custom PHP extensions to expand properly. I want to pick up this torch and produce something usable and useful for everyone.

The tables also include surrounding notes where they exist.
+
My plan is simple.

If you think this would be useful, I'd be happy to send the Word .doc file.
+
# Massage the DF2014 namespace into a set of static HTML documents
 +
# Bundle these documents in the docset format
 +
# Release the docset in Dash on OSX and [zealdocs.org Zeal] on Windows and Linux.

--- Grumalg ---
+
Dash/Zeal provide fast instant search and they're designed for searching through sets of documents already.

Load time
+
Step 1 is where all the work takes place of course. I want to do it in a way that is as light on the existing infrastructure as possible. Using the wiki's API and the action:expandtemplates feature, I can expand the XML dump into rendered HTML. But this is essentially scraping the wiki, which isn't good.

I've been having some major issues with response time lately - some pages don't load at all, sending me to the Cloudflare page (see the gaps in my recent edits). I haven't seen a lot of visible traffic, though, so I'm not exactly sure what the cause is (although the load times recently seem to have dropped to about 1-2 minutes). There are still around 300 jobs in the job queue (and according to the settings you posted on Gist, the run rate is set at 0, so I don't know how it would affect performance). -- 19:34, 24 April 2013 (UTC)
+
Instead, I would like to setup my own instance of the wiki and run all the processing locally.

: I got the Cloudflare message again right after posting this (right now I'm on dfweb1, which seems to work, but I'm not logged in). --108.84.202.115 19:39, 24 April 2013 (UTC)
+
So my question for you is, can you kindly give the assets needed to setup a clone of the wiki? AFAIK, all I need to make a facsimile of the wiki is:
:: Memcached barfed recently and that's why performance is awful.  I've been working on fixing it all day today with no luck so far :( --99.35.186.141 19:44, 24 April 2013 (UTC)

PHP backtraces
+
edit: - I forgot to mention images. I plan to support an image-less version of the docset at first that will load the images opportunistically if the internet is available. Eventually, if you don't mind, I'll fetch images in bulk from the wiki (respecting the cache and expiry headers of course).

Lethosor - I assumed you were using some custom CSS to display things like ASCII tiles, stone infoboxes, etc. Is that not the case? Rmblr (talk)
 +
:Oh. If you're referring to diagrams, you can find the relevant CSS in the DFDiagram extension (they're converted into &lt;canvas> elements on the client side by default, but you can disable that in your preferences or simply by parsing the wikitext, which should generate a HTML table instead). Other than that, most CSS is stored in templates (although it can be several levels down - infoboxes use infoheader, infocell, etc.). &mdash;<span style="color:#074">Lethosor</span> (<span style="color:#092">talk</span>) 16:38, 7 December 2014 (UTC)

:From what I remember, size is a major issue with this wiki (due to the multiple namespaces). There used to be a dump of the DF2012 namespace listed in the announcements box (). The link was removed, but apparently it's still accessible. I just downloaded it – it's about 10 MB, and appears to contain the latest revisions of all DF2012 articles (from yesterday, July 7) that I checked (it doesn't include articles from older namespaces, however). It's an XML dump, though, so I don't know how to make it work with various wiki-viewing tools. --<span style="color:#074">Lethosor</span> (<span style="color:#092">talk</span>) 01:36, 8 July 2013 (UTC)

I'm creating a Tileset for DF and I'm now trying to go back and sight references for tilesets that I pulled tiles/content from. I thought that it might be a cool idea if there was a hosted page on the WIKI were DF modifications could be listed as "Free for Use, just sight Author" or "Proprietary: DON'T USE MY WORK w/o permission". Maybe with an included link to the latest version of the mod. I wouldn't mind doing the leg work on this if its something your on board with. Please let me. Thanks.

Hi, I was wondering whether you could add a filter option to the "recent changes" pages so it could hide user registrations: whenever I want to review the most recent changes it seems that the only things going on are a hundred or so spambot registrations. == Alternative captchas ==
+
Hey Briess.

It seems, from the ConfirmEdit page, that ReCaptcha might not be as secure as other types of captchas. This wiki seems to have solved this problem by using FancyCaptcha. While it might not be as secure (according to the page on mediawiki.org), its code is part of the extension, which means it can be easily modified to prevent automated scripts from succeeding, even if they guess the captcha correctly (check the source of the account creation page). It seems to be reasonably effective - the change was made near the end of July, and only 3 accounts have been created since then. --<span style="color:#074">Lethosor</span> (<span style="color:#092">talk</span>) 14:45, 7 September 2013 (UTC)

:(Comment:) mediawiki.org does something similar to this - I'm not sure how well it would work for some pages on this wiki, especially for pages that check the /raw subpage (they'd have to be rewritten to use the base raw page), but it's worth looking into.

Just something like https://www.twitch.tv/directory/game/Slaves%20to%20Armok%20II%3A%20Dwarf%20Fortress that would link to the game's section on Twitch. Figure it might help some discover live DF content.
:(Regarding the Italian wiki:) There's a Polish wiki set up on Wikia - maybe this could be used as an alternative, and we could link to that (like the Russian/French links on the Main Page). --<span style="color:#074">Lethosor</span> (<span style="color:#092">talk</span>) 00:43, 20 September 2013 (UTC)

::Wikidot is a pretty good site, as well as Wikia (which may be better, since it uses the same software as this site). Unfortunately, this site uses a lot of extensions and modifications, which would be difficult, or even impossible, to set up on a large hosting site. I'll look more into the possibilities of hosting pages in different languages here, which would be much easier to set up. --<span style="color:#074">Lethosor</span> (<span style="color:#092">talk</span>) 21:04, 20 September 2013 (UTC)

Additional languages
It may be considerably easier to set up non-English wikis on this site than on other wikis (as I mentioned above, the extensions and patches we use here would be hard to set up, even on a MediaWiki hosting site). Using this site would allow complex things (mainly templates and functions) to be used without being copied over to other wikis. Also, foreign-language wikis would tend to be a lot smaller than the main English wiki (due to fewer contributors), so size shouldn't be a problem. A few things I've found that could assist with this:

* Some templates exist that could probably be ported to this wiki: Wikipedia:mw:Template:Languages uses a lot of #ifexist checks (which could be deleted for languages we won't use at all). Wikipedia:meta:Template:Languages is similar, but adds <code>uselang=</code> to change the interface language for foreign-language pages (which could also be specified in the preferences, so I'm not sure how useful this is).

* Extension:Translate seems promising (it's used on some WMF wikis) - I haven't looked into it much, but I'll test it out when I get a chance.

--<span style="color:#074">Lethosor</span> (<span style="color:#092">talk</span>) 21:31, 20 September 2013 (UTC)

Update: Extension:Translate is working very well - all that's required is adding &lt;translate> tags around the page content. It lets any (logged-in) user edit translations by default, but pages need to be marked before they can be translated, which needs to be done by an admin by default (I'd recommend allowing at least autoconfirmed users to do this with something like <code>$wgGroupPermissions['autoconfirmed']['pagetranslation'] = true;</code>). MLEB is the bundle I'm using - it includes a few useful multilingual extensions, including Translate, Babel, and a language selector (which allows you to change the interface language without messing around with your preferences.) --<span style="color:#074">Lethosor</span> (<span style="color:#092">talk</span>) 17:26, 21 September 2013 (UTC)

:Interesting. I like the idea, but I can't do anything about it until I get back from my business trip. It's probably about time to update the mediawiki software too - I'll look into both at that time. Can't move File:Fäden.png

It's used on cv:thread, but I can't seem to move it to a better title. I think it's because of the accent umlaut - is there any way you can change its name manually in the database? (This maintenance script should do the trick, but it requires a little setup and it might run into the same problem.) —Lethosor (talk) 19:17, 13 March 2014 (UTC)

I missed this. Where should this be moved to? I can give the script a try --Briess (talk) 20:35, 4 May 2014 (UTC)
I was thinking something like f:thread.png or f:rope reed fiber thread.png would work. If not, I can always reupload it and delete the original (assuming that works). —Lethosor (talk) 20:52, 4 May 2014 (UTC)

Creature token page seems to be causing your server trouble

http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2012:Creature_token comes up with a completely blank (like, about:blank blank) for me and pretty much everyone else I've asked about it.

Probably a rendering time issue - the other versions load fine, but v0.31 takes the longest (I'm pretty sure the v0.34 page is the largest). Using action=raw also works. —Lethosor (talk) 10:43, 6 May 2014 (UTC)

Okay, disabling AutoRedirect fixed this, so I'm currently disabling pieces of it to see what's causing the problem. —Lethosor (talk) 19:41, 6 May 2014 (UTC)

—Lethosor (talk) 19:48, 6 May 2014 (UTC)

All right, that seems to have worked. The render time is back down to 1.2 seconds, which is pretty good for such a long page. —Lethosor (talk) 20:11, 6 May 2014 (UTC)

Awesome, glad I could help. 2604:6000:FB03:4601:BE5F:F4FF:FE3B:6A61 16:04, 7 May 2014 (UTC)

Server woes

I'll take a look. --Briess (talk) 22:05, 11 July 2014 (UTC)
I'm guessing this is because AutoRedirect takes more time to render links to pages that don't exist, since it checks every versioned namespace before determining that a page doesn't exist. I'm not sure how to fix this yet, but it seems to me that either disabling the additional namespace checks in the template namespace or only enabling them in the main namespace could work. Any better ideas? —Lethosor (talk) 01:25, 21 July 2014 (UTC)
I think it makes sense to only have the checks happen in the main namespace. We can discuss more on github if you want. --Briess (talk) 17:27, 27 July 2014 (UTC)

Adventure mode redirect

For some reason adventure mode redirects to the 0.34.11 adventurer mode page, so I went to see if I could change this. Apparently, it contains a redirect to adventurer mode, which redirects to the DF2014 page. I'm not quite sure what's going on here, so I thought I should bring this up. It's perhaps related to why the adventure mode links in DF2014:Adventure mode quick start are red, which is why I was looking into it in the first place. —Lue (talk) 23:07, 15 July 2014 (UTC)

File:Seed0volcano.png (reported at Talk:Seed archive). —Lethosor (talk) 19:17, 29 September 2014 (UTC)

Image brokenness

Back in 2012, DrSazar added the poorly-named [File:Sperm.jpg, a photograph of a sperm whale. At some point after May 2013 the photograph changed into an image of actual sperm, presumably drawn from wikimedia commons. The wiki software shouldn't be losing images, or replacing local images with reference images. It's not the only image that seems to be missing, either.--Loci (talk) 16:05, 16 November 2014 (UTC)

Sperm.jpg is still on the servers (as is its thumbnail). Dyed_thread.png is also on the servers, but its thumbnail appears to be missing. I'll try rebuilding the image table to see if that fixes anything. —Lethosor (talk) 16:20, 16 November 2014 (UTC)
Dyed_thread.png has been fixed. I'm still not sure what's wrong with Sperm.jpg - it's stored on the server, but Mediawiki doesn't seem to be recognizing it. —Lethosor (talk) 16:28, 16 November 2014 (UTC)
Mediawiki Commons has a history of being entirely dumb. I moved the page; I think it's possible that busting the thumbnails could theoretically fix it, but I'm not sure. --Briess (talk) 03:40, 17 November 2014 (UTC)

Cloning the wiki

Hi Briess! lethosor directed me here from IRC.

My plan is simple.

 1. Massage the DF2014 namespace into a set of static HTML documents
 2. Bundle these documents in the docset format
 3. Release the docset in Dash on OSX and [zealdocs.org Zeal] on Windows and Linux.

Dash/Zeal provide fast instant search and they're designed for searching through sets of documents already.

Step 1 is where all the work takes place of course. I want to do it in a way that is as light on the existing infrastructure as possible. Using the wiki's API and the action:expandtemplates feature, I can expand the XML dump into rendered HTML. But this is essentially scraping the wiki, which isn't good.

Instead, I would like to setup my own instance of the wiki and run all the processing locally.

So my question for you is, can you kindly give the assets needed to setup a clone of the wiki? AFAIK, all I need to make a facsimile of the wiki is:

 1. the custom CSS theme
 2. a list of extensions you have installed (and their source if necessary)
 3. anything else I don't know about that affects the content generation

I noticed that some of the custom extensions are available on github, but is that all of them?

Cheers, Rmblr (talk)

edit: - I forgot to mention images. I plan to support an image-less version of the docset at first that will load the images opportunistically if the internet is available. Eventually, if you don't mind, I'll fetch images in bulk from the wiki (respecting the cache and expiry headers of course).

Briess - I was thinking of putting some of the settings we use on Github, like WMF's InitialiseSettings.php. Thoughts? —Lethosor (talk) 20:40, 6 December 2014 (UTC)

Rmblr - what custom CSS theme are you referring to? Aside from Mediawiki:Common.css, I don't believe we've made any modifications to the Vector theme. —Lethosor (talk) 20:42, 6 December 2014 (UTC)

Lethosor - I assumed you were using some custom CSS to display things like ASCII tiles, stone infoboxes, etc. Is that not the case? Rmblr (talk)

Oh. If you're referring to diagrams, you can find the relevant CSS in the DFDiagram extension (they're converted into <canvas> elements on the client side by default, but you can disable that in your preferences or simply by parsing the wikitext, which should generate a HTML table instead). Other than that, most CSS is stored in templates (although it can be several levels down - infoboxes use infoheader, infocell, etc.). —Lethosor (talk) 16:38, 7 December 2014 (UTC)
That's reasonable to me. Let's take discussion of what to do for this to the github issues tracker. --Briess (talk) 17:50, 10 December 2014 (UTC)

Ohey, New here. Made an account yesterday, and inserted my email adress where it belonged, and then the wiki returned this: Error sending mail: Unknown error in PHP's mail() function. Same happened for my other email account... Any ideas? Su8perkillr (talk) 14:33, 3 February 2015 (UTC)

Email features are currently broken (see above). —Lethosor (talk) 16:50, 3 February 2015 (UTC)

Ah, sorry for my blindness... I thought I saw no such thread above. Thanks though! Su8perkillr (talk) 20:02, 3 February 2015 (UTC)

No worries. I need to fix it but haven't had time to work on it recently. --Briess (talk) 18:36, 10 February 2015 (UTC)

Error on page; image missing

The page "http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2014:Pasture" is generating the following error, towards the top of the page ...

Error creating thumbnail: convert: unable to open image `/var/www/dfwiki/images/6/62/Roach.png': No such file or directory @ error/blob.c/OpenBlob/2638. convert: unable to open file `/var/www/dfwiki/images/6/62/Roach.png' @ error/png.c/ReadPNGImage/3667. convert: no images defined `/tmp/transform_3d58c9a26907-1.png' @ error/convert.c/ConvertImageCommand/3044. -- Should be fixed. --Briess (talk) 19:09, 20 March 2015 (UTC)

Password reset

Sorry for the inconvenience - I've lost the password to my account FangXianfu. Hopefully you have an email address on record for me & I still have access to it - most of them redirect to fang dot xianfu at gmail dot com, where you can reach me if you need to. Thanks --92.28.199.77 10:55, 3 May 2015 (UTC)

I sent a new password to an email at ironicorbit.org. If that doesn't work, I can try the email above or send it to your account on the forums (Xinael?). —Lethosor (talk) 15:28, 3 May 2015 (UTC)
Note to self: really really really really badly need to fix the email services --Briess (talk) 03:42, 30 July 2015 (UTC)

Can't upload files

I wanted to upload an image about picking bioms for the Quickstart page, but I’m not allowed to. At the time my account was created, the site engine said that it cannot send me a confirmation email because of mail() function. Here’s the image I wanted to add, please use: http://i.imgur.com/0vSEzyZ.png . --Tijagi (talk) 06:30, 23 November 2015 (UTC)

Dwarf Fortress French wiki

Hello Briess,

Do you know who runs the French DW wiki ? It seems impossible to register for that site ( trying to register gets this error : " Fatal error: Call to a member function xpath() on a non-object in /home/librejeu/dwarffortress/wiki/extensions/ConfirmEdit/Asirra.class.php on line 52 " ) and my login from this wiki doesn't work there .

We've got a Facebook group going and some people want to contribute to that site .

wiki dump available?

hey i have an old wiki dump of dwarf fortress that i use through WikiTaxi, was trying to find the dump database to get a newer version but couldn't locate it

Confirmation email won't send

Hi Briess, my account won't send a confirmation email, says something about a PHP error. I rechecked the email address, but it seems to be correct. Thanks, KT

Business Inquiry

Hello Briess,

I am trying to find a good way to get in touch with you, preferably through email so that I can talk to you about a business opportunity with the wiki. Please let me know the best way to get in touch with you.

Thanks

Getting In Touch

Hi Briess,

I am trying to get in touch with you regarding a few questions I have about the wiki. Can you please email me back at mbarr@sovrn.com?

Looking forward to speaking with you!

Thank you, Melissa

Hi Briess, I have a question about a References/Sources Page for DF Modders (Real Quick Question)

Thanks.

Please use HTTPS

Hey Briess.

Could you please set up a TLS certificate for the forum?

I don't like seeing NOT SECURE everytime I visit the forum.

 • Is there any update on this? Solters (talk) 05:21, 8 February 2019 (UTC)
Assuming you mean the wiki and not the forum, the wiki has HTTPS enabled as of this June. —Lethosor (talk) 00:03, 20 July 2019 (UTC)

Wondering if I can have a permission to translate this wiki into Korean

There are Russian, French, and I've seen a dwarf asking for a Japanese in Talk:Main_Page(but seems like no one has replied yet) There might be some limitations since I don't understand 100% about some mods and minecart logics and I'm not an expert translator, but I wish I could do this work. :9 Thanks. - bluebird9281.

Add a link to Twitch Dwarf Fortress section?

Can we add a link somewhere to the DF section of Twitch?

F00z (talk) 21:44, 18 July 2019 (UTC)

What link do you want? There are a lot of related links on the Main Page, and I'm fine with adding one, but I don't know where you want the link to go. —Lethosor (talk) 00:03, 20 July 2019 (UTC)

Just something like https://www.twitch.tv/directory/game/Slaves%20to%20Armok%20II%3A%20Dwarf%20Fortress that would link to the game's section on Twitch. Figure it might help some discover live DF content.
