This article is about an older version of DF.

Crossbows can be made from wood, bone or metal. Wooden and bone crossbows are created at a bowyer's workshop; metal ones at a metalsmith's forge, using the crossbow-making or weaponsmithing skills respectively.

Hunters do use them and they can be assigned to your military. Ammunition for crossbows are bolts.

There are reports that soldiers using crossbows is buggy currently, including problems with equipping bolts, practising at archery targets and going into melee instead of shooting in actual battle.

There are also various reports about problems with hunting, but a hunter will generally use crossbow and bolts and actually shoot at game.
