A '''diplomat''' (referred to in-game as a '''liaison''') is a representative of a given race. Diplomats arrive alongside caravans, and will attempt to hold a meeting with a noble in your fortress. The highest-ranking noble will be selected to meet with the diplomat, and the two will converse in the noble's office if possible.

In general, a diplomat will spend a period of time meeting with the dwarven noble, and will leave afterwards regardless of whether or not the caravan remains. Diplomats prevented from attending their meetings (either from your noble suffering injuries, the noble being deceased and no others being elected in time, the noble being occupied with his work, or the diplomat being locked out of the fortress) will go insane after a period of time.

=== Dwarves ===

The dwarven diplomat is known as the '''outpost liason''', but will 'upgrade' to '''city liaison''' and '''metropolis liason''' once your fortress grows large enough. He or she will conduct a lengthy meeting, and will allow you to request specific items; the following year, the dwarven caravan will prioritize these items.

Once your fortress becomes a mountainhome and the King (or Queen) himself arrives, the liaison will retire and become the king's Advisor. When this occurs, you will be unable to request specific items, although by this point your fortress is likely self-sufficient anyway.

=== Humans ===

The humans will send a '''guild representative''' alongside their caravans. In addition, once your fortress has grown enough to warrant the Baron's arrival, a separate '''human diplomat''' will arrive to meet with him/her. This diplomat doesn't do much of interest, but will still go insane if deprived from his/her meeting.

=== Elves ===

The elven diplomat, unlike the dwarves and humans, will not comment on financial/trade dealings. Instead, he/she will comment on the tree cutting of your fortress. Often, the elves will make a request to cut no more than 100 trees until their next visit. Accepting this initial offer will result in a "compromise", with the tree cap being raised slightly, whereas denying it will cause the diplomat to leave in a huff.
