v0.31:Gem

Small clusters of rough gems can be found strewn throughout the Template:L. After they have been mined by a Template:L and cut by a Template:L, a Template:L can use them to Template:L Template:L, Template:L, and Template:L. Cut gems can also be used to create Template:Ls and are often required as a source material for Template:L. In addition, raw Template:Ls are required to make crystal glass goods. Gem encrusted Template:Ls and Template:L can be found in game, but cannot be made in fortress mode.

The majority of these gems can be brought by and requested from the dwarven caravan, in both cut and rough form. Humans are capable of bringing Template:L gems, also in both forms.

Sometimes, rough gems will be cut into Template:Ls or large gems. The chance of creating a "large gem" or craft is roughly 1 in 3[Verify], the skill of a gem cutter does not affect this number at all[Verify], only the quality of the finished good produced. Note that these will replace a cut gem and cannot be used to encrust goods. The value of such crafts can easily reach hundreds, even thousands depending on the gem.

A dwarf with a Template:L can take a single gem and cut it into a Template:L known as a perfect gem. They function much like large gems.

If you have any bags of sand, you can also manufacture Template:L, which is the same as a lower-value, uncut gem.

Value

Gems have base Template:L of 3 in rough form, which is multiplied by the appropriate value modifier from the table below. They gain value after they are cut in a Template:L. Cut gems have a base value of 5. Items can be decorated (encrusted) with cut gems; all such decorations have a value of 10 times the gem type's value multiplier. See Template:L and Template:L. Large gems have a base value of 10.
