Chance to use an old page[edit]

I've always thought that charts like the one on the old Fuel industry page were quite helpful, so I think a similar chart would be very welcome on the new version of the page. Since (as far as I can tell) the old chart is largely still accurate, it seems like it'd be a good idea just to port the old chart over and if necessary give it a tweak or two. Fuel usage for Steel[edit]

It looks like this page was copied directly from 40d version, complete with the note about fuel usage for making steel (namely, that the refined coal works both as fuel and as a reagent). However, Pig iron states that the refined coal is not counted as fuel and that a normal smelter would need two units of fuel to make pig iron or steel (just as was the case back in the 2D version). Apparent bug?[edit]

It seems that when you have a Block/Bar stockpile set up, the smelter can become confused and gives the message "Urist McFuelUser cancels job: needs refined coal." even though you have piles of coal and no jobs involving coal queued on any structures - and this seems to be tied to the "cancels clean self: area inaccessible" soap bug, also in the same kind of stockpile. As soon as I removed the wonky stockpile the problem with the smelter went away. --75.108.246.131 10:04, 4 August 2010 (UTC)

Yeah, I'm having this same problem, I have tons of refined coal, coke and charcoal, sitting in bins inches away from my smelters, and I'm telling them to make more coal, and I know we have tons of bituminous coal and lignite, and I keep getting "no refined coal" message..

I think the pattern is that if you make your first charcoal before your first smelter, it can get confused. I managed to unconfuse it by using the manager to create pig iron (thus using the charcoal) until I was completely out of charcoal. I don't know why the manager was able to make pig iron when I couldn't do it manually, but he was. I also got rid of my charcoal stockpile, but that by itself didn't seem to help. Anyway, once I was completely out of charcoal, I created one charcoal at a wood furnace and suddenly all the fuel-requiring tasks lit up again. Hope that helps!

Vertical bars and fire[edit]

I was trying to transfer fire up a z-level. I've built vertical bars using coal bars and flooded it with magma. Smoke was generated, but the bars were never set on fire. Am I missing something? --SiTLar 03:05, 18 November 2010 (UTC)
