It would be interesting to add something about value calculation of bridges. Does someone know what multipliers are used? In my case for example, my finely-designed and finely-built bridge had 25 displayed added (5*stone blocks) and 125 architecture. Is that simply x5 for the design then?
:My guess would be that the walls which add a (visible) floor on the level above gain the extra value for that floor. If the tile above already contains something then no new floor gets created, and no bonus value is added. Also, building a wall on top of another wall could conceivably remove the value for the covered floor and add value for a new uncovered floor above, resulting in a value bonus of 0. Hypothetically, it is possible that constructing a wall on an implied floor with another wall in the tile above would have a net architectural value of only 2.--[[User:Loci|Loci]] ([[User talk:Loci|talk]]) 16:29, 8 March 2015 (UTC)
== Change in gem values? ==

It seems that gem values changed at some point in time. In my embark (v 40.19) I found pipe opal (value 30 instead of 10), citrine (6 instead of 2) and tube agate (6 instead of 2). I just updated those ones and will do for the rest once I find them. If I'm mistaken, please respond and feel free to revert my changes. --[[User:Afghani84|Afghani84]] ([[User talk:Afghani84|talk]]) 20:19, 11 January 2015 (UTC)

: There were no changes. The numbers given are the material ''multipliers'', not the values of raw stones. A raw gem has a base value of 3☼, so the 30☼ for a raw pipe opal (mul. 10) is the correct value as derived from the table. {{av}}

Small clusters of rough '''gems''' can be found almost anywhere while [[mining]]. After they have been mined by a [[miner]] and cut by a [[gem cutter]], a [[gem setter]] can use them to [[encrust]] [[furniture]], [[crafts]], and [[ammunition]]. In addition, raw [[rock crystal]]s are required to make crystal glass goods. '''Cut gems''' can also be used to create [[window]]s and are often required as a source material for [[legendary artifact]]s. Gem encrusted [[weapon]]s and [[armor]] can be found in game, but cannot be made in fortress mode. Stones, including the various types of clay, can also be cut into gems.

A large variety of cut gems can be brought by and requested from the dwarven caravan. Rough gems must be procured by your own miners, you cannot import them. Human and dwarven caravans will also bring raw [[glass]] gems.

Exactly 5% of all rough gems will be cut into a single [[Useless_crap|craft]] or '''large gem''' (with 1 craft for every 8 large gems), and the same occurs with raw glass (but with different ratios - 33% of all jobs, producing 11 crafts for every 16 large gems). Note that these will ''replace'' a cut gem and cannot be used to encrust goods. The value of such crafts can easily reach hundreds, even several thousand in the case of valuable gems and good craftsdwarfship. A dwarf with a [[strange mood]] can take a single gem and cut it into a [[legendary artifact]] known as a "perfect gem" - this is simply a special name for an artifact large gem.

If you have any bags of sand, you can also manufacture [[Glass|raw glass]], which is the same as a lower-value, uncut gem.

[[Gizzard stone]]s are found as a by-product when butchering some animals, and can be used like cut gems. Only few animal species give gizzard stones, but each member of such a species butchered will yield one, which can lead to a decent supply when you manage to set up an ostrich farm.

== Value ==
Gems have base [[value]] of 3 in rough form, which is multiplied by the appropriate value modifier from the table below. They gain value after they are cut in a [[jeweler's workshop]]. Cut gems have a base value of 5. Items can be decorated (encrusted) with cut gems; all such decorations have a value of 10 times the gem type's value multiplier. See [[Gem cutting]] and [[Gem setting]]. Large gems have a base value of 10, and can also have a [[quality]] modifier which increases value.

Unlike other gems, diamonds can [[Fire|ignite]] if they come into contact with [[magma]].

== Gem Cuts ==

Finished gems have a particular cut. These cuts do not affect the gem's value. A gem can have multiple cuts, such as a "square brilliant" cut or "tapered baguette" cut. Some gem cuts are also known as "cabochons." Cabochons have a basic "shape" cut but not any more complicated cut. Gizzard stones do not have cuts.

List of cuts:
* baguette
* brilliant
* briolette
* cushion
* emerald
* marquise
* octagon
* oval
* pear
* point
* radiant
* rectangular
* round
* single
* square
* table
* tapered
* trillion

== Rare Gems ==
Faint yellow diamonds only appear in [[kimberlite]] (which itself only appears in [[gabbro]] layers) and sapphires and rubies only appear in [[bauxite]] (which occurs in any sedimentary layers). Colored diamonds only occur in pre-existing clusters of faint yellow diamonds. Star sapphires and rubies only occur within clusters of their peers.

== [[Glass]] ==
Raw glass is treated as an uncut gem. There are three subtypes of raw glass (and, once cut, of cut glass gems):

Gems

{| style="border-spacing: 0"
|-
! Gem name
! Value
! Color
! Requires
|-
|green glass||2×||{{Raw Tile|☼♦|2:0}}||[[bag]] full of [[sand]]
|-
|clear glass||5×||{{Raw Tile|☼♦|3:0}}||[[bag]] full of [[sand]] + [[pearlash]]
|-
|crystal glass||10×||{{Raw Tile|☼♦|7:1}}||rough [[rock crystal]] + [[pearlash]]
|}

Making raw glass requires a dwarf with the [[glassmaking]] [[labor]] designated, and, just like working [[metal]], it also requires [[fuel]] (either [[coke]] or [[charcoal]]) at a normal glass furnace, or [[magma]] at a magma [[glass furnace]]. Like all gems, raw glass has no [[quality]] modifiers.

Raw gems are only one of the many things your [[glassmaker]]s can make from glass. See [[glass]] and [[glass industry]] for more information.

Based on this, is the article incorrect in its assessment of how cuts are decided? It would seem "brilliant" is never used alone, and "rose" isn't on our list. == Moving large gems ==

Large gems can be used as bait in [[animal trap]]s, upon destruction of the animal trap, this gems is dropped next to where the animal trap was. So, this is a method for moving gems, though not a very reliable one. Also 'large gems' can be chosen as one of the types of 'finished goods' for a stockpile. Once a large gem is encrusted with other items, dwarves will move it to such a stockpile.

== Rarity of gems ==

I've done some tests with the '''prospect''' tool of DFHack on four different locations. Certain gems, like the grossulars and [[Goshenite]], which seem to spawn on marble, are exceedingly rare. Not found a single grossular, I only found Goshenite on 2 maps, one having 3 gems and the other having 133, being at most the third least abundant gem in the map.

I remember there was some sort of bug where a sort of mineral wouldn't spawn due to the presence of another (can't remember but I believe it's related with silver or tin), maybe this is related.

Also, I remember that gems increase the scarser mineral frequency is, although again I don't have the source for this, although it would make sense as most gems don't spawn within mineral clusters.
I've picked up the [http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=79018.msg2063804#msg2063804 good work] made by Shandra, treated it according to gems, and found some results. However, those results are... ugly, to say the least. I'll try to supply the Excel spreadsheet, as graphing the results is really really ugly, but I can safely assume the following:

# Biomes affect the gem distribution. As I didn't find some varieties of [[Diamond|Diamonds]] or Agate in any of the samples, stands to reason that even by messing with mineral frequency one can't make gems appear where they don't belong (e.g. agates can only appear in sedimentary layers).
# [[Advanced_world_generation#Mineral_Scarcity|Mineral Scarcity]] affects the distribution in a strange way. Some gems like [[Onyx]] will only appear, and at low quantities, at the lowest setting (hence the biggest frequency), although this might be related to the former point. Other gems, such as [[Bandfire opal]] seem to have some sort of tiers, that actually increase with decreasing mineral frequency. And there are others that peak at intermediate ranges.

The dataset, however, is quite noisy, and fails because it's a single location, and as such can not encompass all different types of layers. If one were to take the maximum value of the gems in all the sets, it would come out something like the following:
In regards to what lead me here, [[Cinnamon grossular|Cinnamon grossulars]] happen to be infrequent (and not as rare as I thought), as it sits in the middle of the table, but as I said earlier, I did search some sites and found no evidence of it's existence. Also, these grossulars seem to appear ''only'' on Mineral Scarcity ranges nearing 25000 (e.g. Rare to Very Rare). This would benefit from a more extensive search, but for now this is what exists so far.--[[User:Doktoro Reichard|Doktoro Reichard]] ([[User talk:Doktoro Reichard|talk]]) 16:07, 12 January 2014 (UTC)
Finally got around to add the .xls in a Dropbox. The file is [https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/27314922/Dwarf%20Fortress/Gems2.xls here]. It's very very ugly though.--[[User:Doktoro Reichard|Doktoro Reichard]] ([[User talk:Doktoro Reichard|talk]]) 14:55, 17 January 2014 (UTC)

== Rarity of gems ==

== Moving large gems ==

== Rarity of gems ==

I could post the prospects (as I've piped them to text) but the map was custom-made, hence somewhat unreliable.--[[User:Doktoro Reichard|Doktoro Reichard]] ([[User talk:Doktoro Reichard|talk]]) 16:36, 11 January 2014 (UTC)

I'd like to put this bit of page for discussing and confirming... well, what's in the title.

Some things I've noticed so far:

* when cutting a tree at a trunk tile '''above''' the ground level ( = the lowest z-level the tree occupies), it's possible to produce some sort of a cave-in; presumably, the woodcutter chops the trunk that s/he's standing on.
** Can anyone replicate this behavior?
** Has anyone received any quasi-cave-ins by cutting trees at ground level? --[[User:StrikaAmaru|StrikaAmaru]] 15:25, 12 July 2014‎ (UTC)
:What do you mean by "cave in"? A message about something collapsing? I remember seeing something like that on the bug tracker. --[[User:Amena Ralikema|Amena Ralikema]] ([[User talk:Amena Ralikema|talk]]) 15:31, 12 July 2014 (UTC)
:: Yes, exactly like a cave-in; my woodcutter was happily chopping a branch, then I get the message, the game re-centers, and the dorf is on the ground, stunned but uninjured. Actually, when considering that cutting a branch cuts down the whole tree, a cave-in is exactly what happened: she was sitting on the tree, then the tree stopped existing. Cue one dropping dwarf. I'm inclined to think this is normal behavior, but still something that we need to take into account. BTW: the bug about cave-ins is probably about the completely unrelated, and definitely buggy, random "Something has collapsed on the surface!" messages that keep popping up with no rhyme or reason. --[[User:StrikaAmaru|StrikaAmaru]] 17:15, 13 July 2014‎ (UTC)

* Trees grow every year; a freshly-matured tree only extends 2 z-levels, and produces comparatively little wood (7 in my case). Still has fruit, even though it was a sapling when flowering season passed.--[[User:StrikaAmaru|StrikaAmaru]] 15:25, 12 July 2014‎ (UTC)
== Explosive leaves and fruit ==

I've lost several dwarves in a freak Oak leaf shedding accident; some sort of bug makes tree-leaves and fruit about the same weight as a constructed wall-- with the same amount of impact force that it could cause from falling such a height.

An oak dispersed its leaves normally after autumn rolled around, but little did my passing stone hauler know what he was about to become.

The force of the falling oak-leaves shattered the dwarf's skull and sent his fingers, arms, a leg, and teeth flying in several directions. Each possessed the force of some carnal meteor that burrowed through the mess of wood and bone of the surrounding environment-- a tooth had even gone so far as to destroy a hovering, unwary Kea many z-levels above the intial impact. The dwarf's left arm struck and killed my only carpenter, going so far as to pulp both his head and upper-body-- his already dead corpse being sent off my drawbridge's unsealed walls and into the abyss. The other arm flew several feet away and into the canopy of another Oak tree as though an omen of things to come. The poor stone-pusher's fingers, somehow detached from the arms they once occupied by the velocity of the impact, simply fell to the ground beneath the squashed dwarf. None could find his missing left-leg; some believed it ended up somewhere inside the unfortunate dwarf's remaining body, others believe it transcended space and time with the sheer amount of speed it acquired from the initial earth-shattering oak leaf-fall.
It's not limited to fruit-baring trees you see. <small>&ndash; [[template:unsigned|unsigned]] comment by [[User:184.166.69.80|184.166.69.80]]</small>
== Destructive tree growth ==

Tree growth can deconstruct buildings. I had a small "indoor/light" area that I had bridged over for indoorish farming of above-ground crops, and refuse. A few tiles weren't buildings/stockpiles, and one ended up growing a sapling. Subsequently, I witnessed a spectacular explosion when the tree burst through the ceiling, deconstructing it and sending blocks and logs flying. I didn't get any alert or auto-pause of the sort you get when trees spontaneously collapse on the surface. Probably a fact worth noting in the page. This might also be related to why there are spontaneous collapses of trees&mdash;trees growing across portions of each other, and causing tree deconstruction? --[[User:Jaygengelbach|Jaygengelbach]] ([[User talk:Jaygengelbach|talk]]) 05:10, 4 September 2014 (UTC)

:Trees bursting through ceilings are a bug that was supposedly fixed. If it's still happening, it's not intended. Trees deconstructing things might not be. [[User:King Mir|King Mir]] ([[User talk:King Mir|talk]]) 05:25, 4 September 2014 (UTC)
how long does it take for a sapling to grow into a full-grown tree that can be chopped down? I cannot find this information in the thread and think it would be interesting to add it!--[[User:Afghani84|Afghani84]] ([[User talk:Afghani84|talk]]) 15:01, 4 January 2015 (UTC)

==Alternative arguments==
Hey, Loci and other editors. I noticed that the game uses <code>intestines</code> while this template uses <code>intestine</code>. Also, <code>gizzard</code> in DF is called <code>gizzard_stone</code> in this template. Based on [[User:Lethosor/Wiki sandbox/Default args|this page]], it looks like alternative but identical arguments can be implemented like this:
<pre>{{{arg1 | {{{arg2|default}}} }}}</pre> I would go in and edit it, but I'm not as experienced with this template and I'd probably miss something or break the template. Also, editing it has a nasty tendency to clear [[:Category:DF2012:Flying|categories like this]], so I'm reluctant to make a change like this myself. Do you think we should allow alternative arguments like this or just keep the template the way it is? --[[User:Lethosor|Lethosor]] ([[User_talk:Lethosor|talk]]) 22:09, 18 February 2013 (UTC)

:That certainly seems reasonable, and it would help make the template less "fiddly" when people try to add butchering returns. Unless anybody objects feel free to add this in, or I can make this change the next time I modify the template. I would like to note, however, that "gizzard" and "gizzard_stone" are two different things: a [[DF2012:gizzard stone|gizzard stone]] is a piece of rock stored in a [[gizzard]] (organ) for grinding food or ballast. Not all creatures with gizzards will have gizzard stones, so those two should be kept separate. --[[User:Loci|Loci]] 19:59, 19 February 2013 (UTC)

== Category suggestions ==

These are a few ideas I had for categorizing creatures, which could probably be implemented in this template (but I'm not exactly sure how). I'll leave them here in case someone else has better ideas on how to implement them.
I'm putting these in their own section to make it easier to add new ones. --{{User:Lethosor/sig}} 02:14, 27 February 2013 (UTC)

:The problem I have with adding categories that depend on /raw information is that they will turn out exactly like [[:Category:DF2012:Flying]]; that is, mostly empty and non-functional. I specifically did not create categories for [http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php?title=Template:Attrib_proc&diff=prev&oldid=181612 my recent additions] to creature attributes because I believe non-functional categories reflect poorly on the wiki. That being said, creating an administrative category for [[:Category:DF2012:Incomplete butchering returns|incomplete butchering returns]] shouldn't cause any problems. A "quick-link" to creature variations is an interesting idea, but significantly more difficult to implement. I will try to think of an acceptable way to handle variation information. --[[User:Loci|Loci]] 20:32, 27 February 2013 (UTC)

:: About the quick-links for variations - I thought of searching for <code>[APPLY_CREATURE_VARIATION]</code>, but I'm not even sure if it would be visible to a template - see the aardvark man raws, for example. If it's possible, a creature with that tag would provide an easy reference to the base creature (but it wouldn't be so easy to look up creatures that inherit from the base creature). --{{User:Lethosor/sig}} 21:29, 27 February 2013 (UTC)

:: I tried making a rudimentary page at [[:Template:Creature/variation links]]. My idea was to extract the name of the base creature (since no creature variations that I know of change base names), using [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:Remove_first_word this template] as an example, but it seems that this wiki doesn't support <code>#invoke</code> (or several other useful parser functions). I intended to have the template parse out the creature name, then include a secondary template which would simply display the links. Do you happen to know of any alternatives for string processing like this? --{{User:Lethosor/sig}} 22:57, 27 February 2013 (UTC)

::I was apparently mistaken about butchering returns. The Creaturelookup template uses logic to disable butchering returns for [[DF2012:Learns|intelligent]] creatures, which is determined by processing the /raw values. That means the [[:Category:DF2012:Incomplete butchering returns|incomplete butchering returns category]] automatically includes those creatures which should have been excluded as non-butcherable. Adding "contrib=no" to these creatures will still remove them from the category, but that's a lot of extra work for no appreciable gain. --[[User:Loci|Loci]] 20:39, 27 February 2013 (UTC)

:::My original thought was that, because animalmen inherit the NOT_BUTCHERABLE tag from their base creature, it wouldn't show up when searched for, but [[nightwing]], a normal creature, appears in the category. Another interesting observation: the raws on [[aardvark man]] are different than the ones on [[DF2012:Aardvark man/raw]] - the latter ''includes'' the inherited tags. I honestly don't know why, since the gamedata template doesn't seem to call #df_raw anywhere. In any case, it turns out creature'''info''' is what places contrib=yes pages into a category. This is even more confusing, since it looks like the category should only be included when the contribution message appears, which is not the case with [[aardvark man]]. --{{User:Lethosor/sig}} 21:20, 27 February 2013 (UTC)
:::: On second glance, it also turns out that you added that category, so I guess you would know about it. --{{User:Lethosor/sig}} 21:29, 27 February 2013 (UTC)
:::: I managed to track down [[:Template:Variation raw]], which uses <code>no_decode</code> to prevent expanding creature variations. I guess that's a relief, since it means both the un-expanded and expanded raws are accessible. --{{User:Lethosor/sig}} 21:36, 27 February 2013 (UTC)

::::Right. When '''you''' view [[aardvark man]] you don't see the "contrib" message because the Creaturelookup template sets "death=nobutcher" based on certain values in the /raws, then the CreatureInfo template suppresses the "contrib" message because "death=nobutcher". When '''the automated update process''' views [[aardvark man]], though, the /raws are not accessible, so the "death=nobutcher" line is not included, so the "contrib" message (and associated category) ''are'' included. This is the exact same bug that affects every other category that depends on information from the /raws. --[[User:Loci|Loci]] 21:15, 3 March 2013 (UTC)

===Suggested categories===
* Pages missing butchering returns entirely: there isn't an easy way to find all pages that lack butchering information. Most "tattered" creature pages don't have butchering returns, but some do, and some that don't have it are rated higher than "tattered". Of course, this category shouldn't include animalmen, or other creatures that can't be butchered. It seems like checking for a single body part would do the trick, but [[jackal]]s don't seem to produce hearts. [[Rabbit]]s only produce a skull (which might work, but a few creatures might not even produce that - I'll have to check).
* My feeble attempt on [[:Category:DF2012:Hermaphrodite]] could use a little work (if you're wondering, they're basically creatures without a male and female caste, so they can't reproduce). I know there are more than the 2 I bothered to mark, and if we integrate it here we could delete the template I created to cover it.
* This is probably unrelated to attributes, but quick access to creature variations (giant, animalman, etc) could be useful in some cases. They're hard to find in the creature template, and it's especially hard when the base creature is a vermin (although in that case it uses vermininfo instead, which makes it a lot harder to set up links between creatures since they use different templates. Using a separate template to look up creature variations given a creature name could work, similar to [[:Template:Tame attrib proc]].)
* Adding a category for creatures with <code>contrib=yes</code> would make it easier to track down pages that need more information (this is probably the easiest, just adding a simple <code><nowiki>{{#if:{{{contrib}}}| {{Category|Incomplete butchering returns}}}}</nowiki></code> should do the trick, but I'm not sure if it should be added on this template or under creatureinfo. Also, while I would prefer to use the category template to split the category into namespaces, using a link might be preferable in a few cases which I have yet to discover).

== interwiki ==

Please add <nowiki>{{interwiki|{{FULLPAGENAME}}}}</nowiki> as in Template:Plantlookup/aux. It should make possible to jump (back) to the russian version... (Maybe it's not the best place for it?). --[[User:Aklad|Aklad]] ([[User talk:Aklad|talk]]) 20:57, 17 January 2014 (UTC)
:I added the interwiki template to the {{tl|creaturedesc}} template instead--the interwiki links should still automatically appear on creature pages, and this template is already excessively complex.--[[User:Loci|Loci]] ([[User talk:Loci|talk]]) 20:28, 22 January 2014 (UTC)
== Masterwork mod ==

Hi there,
I've been trying to add data to animal pages from the mod. Since the mod changed the butchered items (no spleen, sweetbread, lungs etc - but wool, pelt etc added), I was wondering whether it is possible to alter the template to adjust to those changes. I tried simply adding/deleting certain categories but the preview still shows the old ones.
