Memories are recipients for a dwarf's thoughts. They are essentially an evolution of the old trauma system from previous versions.

Each dwarf has eight short-term memory slots and eight long-term memory slots. During a year-long period, the dwarf will "dwell upon/relive/remember" the eight events that evoked the strongest emotions (negative or positive) and receive an additional stress change. After a year in one of the short-term slots, a memory will then be moved to the long-term memory slots if it is stronger than the ones there, otherwise it is discarded. Long-term memory slots are retained forever and keep haunting the dwarf periodically (for better or for worse), until they are overwritten by even stronger memories or enter the dwarf's core memory. In order to avoid redundant and similar trauma that piles up and clogs your dwarf's slots (e.g. multiple instances of horror in battle when seeing many creatures die), memories are grouped into categories, and only the strongest emotion in each category will get a specific slot.

The emotion evoked by the memory may change in nature as time passes, and this may cause permanent personality changes in a dwarf's traits and values. When this happens, it will be indicated in the thoughts and preferences screen in bright magenta: which way the trait or value changed, what event caused the change and when.

Mechanics
Dwarves have thoughts based on their experiences, which provoke emotions of varying degrees of strength, creating memories. Each type of memory falls into a group. Each dwarf has three memory storage systems: short-term, long term memory, and core memory. You can see what has recently been in a dwarf's memory by looking at their thoughts and preferences screen. If an experience is immediate: "She felt satisfied at work." it has affected their short-term memory, but if an experience is recalled: "She felt satisfied remembering work." it has affected their long-term memory. Core memories are shown in detail, alongside the year of the event and a personality change that came about as a result. ""

Short-term memories
A dwarf has 8 short-term memory slots. When a dwarf has a thought, a check is made to see if a memory of that group already exists in a short-term memory slot. If the thought doesn't fall into an existing group, the new thought will fill an empty slot, or if no slots are empty, overwrite the weakest memory (the one with the weakest emotion) in the 8 short-term memory slots - even if the overwritten memory is stronger than the new one. If the thought already has one of its group in a memory slot the strongest memory of the two, the new thought and the existing memory, will be kept and the other discarded.

For example, a dwarf gets caught in the rain and is dejected (strength 1/4). If they haven't seen rain in the last year, this will be written to their memory, overwriting the weakest existing memory of a different group. If they have seen rain in the last year, it will overwrite the previously weaker emotion of being annoyed by the rain (strength 1/8), or ignore the new experience if the old emotion was the stronger being dismayed by the rain (strength 1/2).

This mostly leads to a constant cycling of the weakest of the 8 memory slots as new thoughts overwrite each other. An overwritten thought is a forgotten thought. You can see this in the dwarf's thoughts and preferences screen, they'll mention more than 8 things that they have recently experienced, but they are only being affected by 8 of those things. The list is not a reflection of what is in their current memory, but is a reflection of what has been in their memory recently. The consequence of this cycling is that short-term memories are mostly fleeting, with a maximum of 7 short-term memories having a lasting effect on a dwarf's mood.

Long-term memories
Once a memory has remained in a short-term memory slot for one year it will attempt to be promoted to a long-term memory slot. There are 8 long-term memory slots, and the procedure works similarly to short-term memory allocations, with one important difference.

When the attempt to promote is made, a check is first made to see if there is an empty slot, if there is an empty slot the memory will be promoted to that slot even if a memory of that group already exists in another long-term memory slot. It is possible (but very rare) to have more than one memory of the same group in long term memory. This cannot happen in short term memory. If there are no empty slots a check is made to see if an existing memory of the same group exists. The promotion will fail if the existing long term memory is stronger, or will overwrite if the existing long term memory is weaker. If there are no empty slots and no existing memory of the same group, then the weakest of the other existing memories in long term will be overwritten.

When a short-term memory is promoted (or possibly fails to promote) to long term memory it leaves an empty slot in the dwarf's short-term memory. Due to the cycling of the weakest short-term memories, it tends to be the stronger emotions that cause memories to remain in short-term memory for long enough to be promoted. The effect of the promotion on the dwarf's short-term memory is that it 'purges' a slot, allowing for a relatively weaker emotion to stick around without being overwritten by the cycling.

Long-term memories are important and can be particularly impactful on a dwarf's mood because: 1) if a dwarf is frequently experiencing the same thing, good or bad, the same emotion can easily exist in both short term and long term, effectively doubling its impact; 2) long term memories are often revisited long after an experience has ceased to occur; and 3) long term memories can become clogged with thoughts that can't be promoted further - more on that below.

It's currently indeterminate what causes a dwarf to think about something in their long-term memory, whether it's random or predictable, but it seems to be frequent. (Across a sample size of 300 dwarves, all of whom had been in one of several 'happy' fortresses for more than 2 years, the median number of revisited memories was 9, with 83% of dwarves revisiting 8 or more long-term memories. This suggests that all of their long-term memories had been revisited at the point of sampling, with some cycling of long-term memories having occurred within the recent months.)

Core memories
When a dwarf thinks about a long-term memory, it has a 1:3 chance of being promoted to core memory and causing one or more personality changes, if the memory is of a group that can be promoted to core memory. There is no limit on the number of core memory slots, and it is common to have several core memory slots populated by memories of the same group, for example, several experiences of seeing dead bodies in different years are common in core memory.

Core memories are less impactful than long-term memories, as they are rarely, if ever, revisited. However, the change that is made to the personality of the dwarf is permanent, and this can be for good or bad.

The majority of long-term memories that will be promoted to core memory are negative thoughts. The ones that have been found so far are: seeing a dead body, seeing somebody die, having a loved one die, being uncovered, experiencing trauma, experiencing miasma, rain, freakish weather or being made nauseous by the sun; and on the positive side: becoming a parent and gaining a sibling. A query to Toady about this tendency to promote only certain long-term memories to core memory confirmed that he thinks that there is an exclusion list, but couldn't recall what was on it at the time of the Q&A.

The effect of mostly negative memories being promoted to core means that the long-term memory slots of a dwarf can become clogged with relatively positive emotions, if care is taken. Only the weakest long-term memory will be cycled out by short-term memories being promoted, meaning that it is possible to maintain dwarves in an ecstatic state.

Long-term memories that are written to the core memory are removed from long-term memory, thereby leaving an empty slot.
EgglayingHatching eggs requires that the dwarves are prevented from removing the fertilized eggs from the nest box until the incubation period ends in exactly 3 months after they were laid. This can be done by placing the nest box behind a locked door or by forbidding the eggs in the nest box. Forbidding eggs on the kitchen menu will not prevent dwarves from removing them from the nest box &mdash; it will only prevent them from being cooked. Similarly, modifying all stockpiles to disallow eggs will prevent hauling jobs, however the eggs remain available for cooking and eating. Fertilized eggs left undisturbed in next boxes will still hatch even if the mother was forcibly removed from the nest box. This may be a bug because it was implied that eggs that are unattended by its mother for a week are supposed to go bad.

Only "pregnant" females will lay fertilized eggs, though as with creatures that give live birth the pregnancy status of a creature is not normally visible. Whether eggs that were laid are fertilized or not is also not visible, though DFhack has a plugin that displays the fertilization status of the eggs, as well as allow players to view the mother's pregnancy status via a console. The females of a species will never become pregnant if the pet population cap has been exceeded, but those already pregnant before the cap was exceeded can still lay fertilized eggs. Culling or trading away excess animals will allow the females to become pregnant again. In order for eggs to be fertilized, a male of the species must be present (though this does not always guarantee fertilization). Unlike in previous versions of Dwarf Fortress, the male must have spent time with the female to fertilize their seed pouch (the male need not be alive at the time of egglaying, however). One fertilization provides seed for two egglayings. How it works is that the female becomes pregnant for about 6 months (similar to the gestation period of non-sentient creatures giving live birth), during which any eggs laid will become fertilized. In practice the first clutch tends to bring the species population over the pet cap, especially if the species can lay large clutches, so the second clutch can still be fertilized provided the female was still pregnant even after the population cap has been exceeded. Depending on the animal, fertilization chances seem to differ. verify If the creature is sapient (has any of the INTELLIGENT, CAN_LEARN or CAN_SPEAK tokens), then the egg-laying female must also be 'married' in order for her eggs to be fertilized, and she must also have spent time with her husband. Dwarves in strange moods will create legendary artifacts: unique, "named" items which are of unsurpassable quality (and often, value as well). An artifact is the ultimate expression of a dwarf's desires, fears, memories and hopes in art-form, and each dwarf will produce at most one in their lives (or die trying). Dwarves that create an artifact immediately gain enough experience to boost them to legendary level in the affected skill, unless they were possessed.

Dwarves drop artifacts in the workshop as soon as they are made. They can be traded, just like any item of their type, or stolen, sold or warred over, and may transfer between civilizations in those ways. Note that artifacts can be constructs that are not normally available to the player, such as metal beds or doors made from gems. A list of all artifacts in the fortress can be seen by pressing O.

Uses
Artifacts are normally of extremely high value and quality, and can be used just like normal items of their type; they're therefore extremely useful in any situation where value or quality are important. Note that material and weight calculations still apply, so an artifact sword made of dingo bone, or an artifact breastplate made of gold, are not going to be overwhelmingly powerful.
Furniture
Artifact doors and hatches provide indestructible, instantly-lockable gates.

Artifact furniture of high value can be placed in rooms to greatly increase the room's value (and hence quality), which can be useful to meet the room quality requirements of nobles. They can also be placed in high-traffic areas of the fort, so that dwarves that pass by (or over) them will get happy thoughts from admiring them. Artifact mechanisms can be turned into levers and traps, which count as furniture.

Certain artifact types (barrels, buckets, mechanisms, etc.) can be used as components in some buildings; doing so will multiply the artifact's effect on fortress value. They can also potentially be displayed on a pedestal or in a display case.

Weapons/Armor
Artifact equipment gets a large &times;3 quality bonus to their weapon accuracy and armor deflection values (compared to &times;2 to masterwork); this is not enough to make totally inappropriate materials competitive with, say, steel masterwork equipment. Also note that while they will be half again as more accurate, artifact blades do not have a sharper edge than masterwork items of their material; in other words, their material type modifiers remain unchanged, and they will do no more damage than a regular item of their type (though they will never dull.)

Artifact weapons (if not being used in the military) can be put into a weapon trap, which will make it count as valuable furniture.

Finished Goods
An artifact gem is called a perfect gem and functions the same as a large gem, having all the same uses, i.e., none, other than boosting fortress value and trading. Display cases and pedestals can also be used to show off otherwise-useless artifact crafts.

Cages
Artifact cages and animal traps are unique, in that they are capable of containing any type of vermin creature without them ever escaping - by comparison, certain types of vermin can gnaw, fly, or immolate their way out of ordinary cages depending on their materials.

Any other art (including other artifacts) that references an artifact cage will mention what animals are currently in it - the artifact quality of the cage makes it capable of magically self-updating in all references to it in the world.

Non-player artifacts
Artifacts can be created in world generation and afterwards:

*Non-player dwarves can also be taken by strange moods and create artifacts of their own, except for furniture.
*All original books, regardless of form or content, are considered artifacts - copies are not, however.
*Some heroic events in world generation will trigger the naming of an object. For instance, a warrior may name a piece of equipment that they were carrying when they slew a megabeast. This can be any kind of gear, from the weapon they used to kill it, to a low boot they were wearing (that, presumably, proved critical in combat). Once named, these heroic objects are also considered artifacts, though their quality and properties remain unchanged. Assuming the person who named it didn't die, they will still be in possession of it.
*Some artifacts qualify as holy relics; generated from a body part or clothing item that belonged to a religion's dead high priest. These are usually stored in a temple, separately from the remainder of the corpse, and displayed on a pedestal or in a display case.
*Some creatures will be blessed with necromancy through an artifact slab gifted by a deity.
*Certain spoilery locations contain a different kind of artifact slab.

Once created, artifacts are subject to various claims that depend on the circumstances surrounding their creation: if it's a single person (as opposed to an entity), the creator can keep it for themselves, gift it to their parent entity, or claim it as a family heirloom. This can be shown in Fortress mode, where the artifact creation announcement will also include the nature of the claim: "He/She offers it to <entity>", "He/she claims it as a family heirloom"/"He/she claims it as a family heirloom in the name of the family ancestor <figure>" or "He/she claims it as a personal treasure". On the other hand, if an entity was responsible for its creation, the entity will keep its claim on it (e.g. a religion and its priests over a holy relic, or a library and its scholars over a book).

Regardless of their nature or classification, artifacts will then be subjected to the turmoil of the world:

*The bearer can be killed in combat, by enemies from another civilization or a megabeast. Often, the slayer will loot the artifact for themselves and keep it, claim it as a family heirloom themselves, or return it to their parent entity.
*More peaceful artifact transfers also happen for diplomacy purposes.
*Artifacts claimed as family heirlooms are passed down to descendants, if the bearer dies of old age. Those initial couples all get associated family structures, and then those links are passed along to the children and so forth. The descendant is chosen according to "importance", or otherwise at random.
*If stored at a site, the artifact can be stolen by creatures prone to thieving, like kobolds. If the site becomes invaded, the artifact can likewise be robbed by an invader.
*If a family or entity becomes deprived of an artifact they had laid a claim on, they may send representatives to claim it back: these come in the form of questers or agents roaming the world to gather information in more or less covert ways. Depending on the nature of the entities involved, they may approach the matter in different ways: a civilization may go to war if they find out the artifact resides in another civilization's site, or they may send mercenaries to kill a beast that stole it.
*Sometimes, artifacts can be "lost in the wilds". The circumstances surrounding such events are unclear, but this means they're effectively lost, for all intents and purposes: foreign questers will wander the world fruitlessly in search of it (unless they happen to stumble upon the artifact's exact spot in the entire world, which is extraordinarily unlikely), and squads you send to retrieve it will never return due to a bug.

As a player, you may interact with these artifacts in (currently two) different ways:

Fortress mode
You may send squads of dwarves on a mission to "retrieve" an artifact from a site. (If the artifact wasn't created by your fortress, it's not so much "retrieval" as "theft".) This includes sites residing outside civilizations, such as necromancer towers containing books of interest. If the artifact's location is not known, you may send your squads off to gather information on its whereabouts.

Note that the site's entity will keep its claim on the artifact you've stolen:
*If you're caught, expect a retaliatory invasion. If you've raided a site from a civilization you were at peace with, what you made was a declaration of war.
*If you're not caught, you may still receive visits from agents and questers inquiring about the artifact's location. Once they know it's in your fortress, they may demand you bring it back, or sneak back with the intent to come back with an army to make their demands more convincing.

Under the rumour system, artifacts created in your fortress can also become known to foreign sites and civilizations. Some of their historical figures may then lay claim to your artifacts, and plot to steal them.

Adventure mode
As an adventurer, you may receive quests to retrieve artifacts. The nature of the quest will be as diverse as the nature of artifacts and claimants thereof. Therefore, the difficulty can range from 'piece of cake' to 'nigh-impossible' (if the artifact was claimed, say, by a demon lord of a goblin civilization). Once you're in possession of an artifact, you may encounter other parties who have laid a claim on it. It is up to you (and the circumstances, e.g. if a third party happens to be well-armed and greater in numbers than yours) to decide which party to satisfy. Alternatively, if the artifact happens to be very useful, such as a strange mood-generated steel sword, you may simply decide to keep it for yourself and leave all troubles behind. Note that completing quests for artifacts will increase your reputation, and flaunting your artifacts visibly in front of onlookers will trigger rumors.

Legends mode
The artifacts' creation history and storage locations are recorded during world generation and can be discovered in Legends mode. For example, artifact scepters may become symbols of various rulers.

Other notes
Artifacts cannot be designated for dumping or melting, nor be damaged by building destroyers or fire, although they will ignite and burn as is normal for their material type. They can be lost in pits, carried off the map by flows, stolen by thieves, atom-smashed by bridges, or melted by extreme heat. The loss of an artifact does not appear to affect the happiness of its creator.

In Dwarf Fortress Talk #7, Toady stated that even when atom smashed, or melted by extreme heat (or destroyed in any other manner) the artifact will not be deleted but instead receive a "Hidden" flag, which causes the item to respawn in a random location on the site in which it was destroyed, perfectly unharmed, after reclaiming a fort or visiting it in adventure mode. However, in a Future of the Fortress post he stated "Artifacts being indestructible by default appears to be gone", due to an "utterly destroyed or transformed" flag.169696/8395484

After creation, an artifact cannot be further decorated (by encrusting it with gems, studding it with metal, or sewing images into it) - a pitiful gabbro scepter, for instance, cannot be made more valuable.

Artifacts disappear from the artifact list upon abandoning a fortress. Artifact creation has a wider selection of possible item types for several skills, occasionally resulting in artifact items that could not be made normally, like bone shields or metal beds.

Artifacts and their mechanics were the topic of Dwarf Fortress Talk #7. The future of artifacts was discussed in a separate portion of that cast.

Artifacts can be disabled in d_init.txt

Artifacts created by happy dwarves (i.e. not fell or macabre moods) have a 1% chance to be named after the dwarf who created them.
Egg production, like the meat industry, beekeeping industry, fishing industry, and farming, creates food. In egg production, collection and cooking of eggs is the primary activity, as, over time, domestic poultry, such as chickens, can produce much more food as eggs than the same animal produces as meat when butchered (1 egg = 1 meat = 1 meal). When starting out a new fortress, raising poultry can be an excellent way to quickly fill up your food barrels as it requires very little set-up for your dwarves. As a by-product of egg production, older or excess animals can be butchered as part of the meat industry.

Acquiring egg-laying animals
There are several sources for obtaining egg-laying animals, outlined below.

Embark
You can buy domestic poultry at embark and even decide how many males and females of each animal you embark with. Since you don't need males to produce eggs, and need only one male to breed, you could embark with three or four hens, and a single rooster. Poultry animals are very economical to purchase at embark, costing only 6☼ each.

Of the domestic poultry, turkeys produce the most eggs per clutch on average, followed by ducks, then chickens and guineafowl. Turkeys are also the largest poultry animals, and produce the most meat and other products if butchered as part of the meat industry, with geese and blue peafowl only slightly smaller. All domestic poultry become adults one year after hatching, but geese, blue peafowl, and guineafowl grow to full size at one year; other poultry only reach full size after two years.

Migration
Domestic poultry may arrive at your fortress with a wave of migrants. These animals may be strays or pets.

Trading
Requires: A trade depot, a trader, a merchant, and some tradeable goods

You can purchase egg-laying animals from a caravan. While human and dwarven merchants will generally bring standard poultry, elven merchants may bring tamed exotic egg-laying animals, which may prove useful for value or defense purposes.

Cage traps
Requires: Cages, mechanisms, a mechanic, animal training zone and an animal trainer

It is also possible to catch egg-laying animals through judicious use of cage traps. This, of course, involves building cage traps where these animals will walk or fly. Once they are trapped the caged animal (or invader) will be delivered to an animal stockpile and the trap will be reset with a fresh cage.

Cage traps should be built where animals will walk, not where they are when you decide to trap them. Any dwarves sent out to create and arm traps in the animals' midst will scare them away, or trigger their aggression. To successfully trap large animals, form a choke point some distance away from them: build walls, perhaps several z-levels high, to create a continuous barrier to movement.

Leave a small gap one or two tiles wide (depending on how many of the critters you want to trap) and build your cage traps there. If the animals haven't moved off or been scared off by the time you're done, and they're docile enough to not attack once they see your dwarves, use military orders to send a dwarf (or several) around behind the animals and herd them toward the choke point.

Note also that cage traps cannot be built within a certain number of tiles of the map edge, so when planning your funnels and choke points, be sure to leave four or five tiles as a buffer zone.

What wild egg-layers are available depends highly on the biome. In general, most maps have flying birds of one kind or another, but they tend to stay up in the air, where cage traps can't get them. Several underground creatures are egg-layers, and as such are available on every map, such as the crundle, elk bird or the rare and dangerous jabberer.

Egg-laying animals that are caught in a cage trap need to be tamed by an animal trainer at an animal training zone before they can be safely used to produce eggs. Note that you are not limited to standard domestic poultry; some of the most lucrative and prolific egg-layers are reptiles.

Breeding
Requires: One or more adult females and one adult male of each species, one or more nest boxes, and time

If a compatible male and a female of the same species are adjacent to each other and there is an open constructed nest box for the female to occupy and lay a clutch of eggs in, then sooner or later (and probably sooner) the male will "impregnate" the female which will allow it to lay fertilized eggs. A female can lay a clutch of eggs again immediately after the last clutch hatches. A female that cannot claim a nest box will not lay a clutch of eggs.

A fertilized clutch will only hatch if they are left in the nest box undisturbed. Collecting the eggs or deconstructing the nest box will prevent the eggs from hatching. A clutch of eggs to be used for breeding should be forbidden while still in the nest boxes to prevent their collection. Alternatively, you can put the nest boxes in a room behind a door and lock the door to keep your dwarves away from the eggs. For insurance, you can set no stockpiles to accept that type of egg, and forbid cooking that type of egg in the kitchen tab of the labor menu. Even if the eggs are left undisturbed, it is possible that clutch was not fertilized. Eggs that don't hatch after two seasons will likely never hatch, and the eggs will need to be collected in order to allow the female to lay another clutch of (hopefully fertilized) eggs, otherwise the female will continue incubating the unfertilized clutch in perpetuity.

As a large number of free-roaming animals will reduce your game speed, a common strategy is to cage all your young poultry until they mature. Keep in mind, though, that some tamed wild species take more than a year to mature, unlike most domestic animals. For example, it may be excusable to butcher a saltwater crocodile hatchling right away, rather than wait 3 years for it to mature and produce more meat and bones.

Using cage traps judiciously (or taking advantage of the animals elves trade) can sometimes snag you a breeding pair of a wild animal. Tame something unusual and start something crazy, like a cave crocodile farm!

Capture
Through the use of expeditions, a player can capture animals not otherwise available. For example, raiding a goblin settlement may yield beak dogs which, curiously, lay eggs.

Egg collection
Requires: A tame adult female egg-laying animal, a nest box, and food hauling

Once you have at least one tame adult female egg-laying animal, you need to build a nest box to begin production of delicious and filling eggs. Every so often, the adult females will claim a nest box and lay a clutch of eggs. Then, a food hauler will collect the eggs and move them to a food stockpile. Food hauling is an unskilled labor, so any dwarf in the fortress can do it. Egg collection is a great way to use those peasants that otherwise just move boulders around the fortress.
This is a small guide aimed towards egg farming, I hope this helps and makes it easy to understand the egg industry... likewise an egg industry can be implemented towards a meat/leather/bone industry at any time with patience.
Here's the guide : https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2975716340

Eggs must be cooked into prepared meals at a kitchen before they can be eaten by dwarves.
Hatching Conditions

(In short, egg fertilization has the same conditions as normal impregnation in the game.)
