Giant cave spiders (also known as GCS) are far different from your regular cave spiders; those are just treats for your cat. Giant cave spiders are as big as grizzly bears and will make treats of dwarves, pets, and the occasional careless adventurer. You can find giant cave spiders in, obviously, caves, caverns and most underground areas. They are the most dangerous creature in the caverns, excluding some forgotten beasts, as they feel no pain, cannot be stunned, can poison creatures and have the ability to shoot webbing to ensnare their prey.

They do not pose a big threat to a fortress when undisturbed, but when a dwarf does disturb one, Armok bless the soul of the unlucky dwarf.

Giant cave spiders are not a rarity with dozens present in the underground caverns, deep below the surface. They can be extremely hard to kill. On occasion, however, a lucky dwarf might pound one to death within a few attacks by punching its skull into its brain, which can be a godsend after an unfortunate cavern breaching exercise.

Webs are quite useful when they aren't being used in an attack against you. Giant cave spider silk is worth twice as much as plant-derived textile and, given the proper setup and victims, can be produced in endless amounts.

If you see a giant cave spider in adventurer mode, an announcement, "You've spotted a Giant Cave Spider!" will appear.

Fighting
Giant cave spiders should not be engaged in melee by a lone dwarf, especially if its armor is lacking. Even if the attacked dwarf is fully armored it will eventually die of hunger or thirst due to being webbed. Even a legendary axedwarf will be unable to do anything, due to the immobilizing webs and subsequent deadly bite. You may attempt to flank a giant cave spider with two melee dwarves, one serving as bait and the other killing the giant cave spider, but it is not a foolproof tactic and you will probably lose one or two dwarves. Marksdwarves, cage traps, and weapon traps are a better solution.

To give you a feeling of how deadly they are in melee, a lone giant cave spider can take on and completely incapacitate any of the semimegabeasts, is the most dangerous predator of the caverns competing with the cave dragon, and fight equally with the weakest megabeasts like rocs or hydras.

Giant cave spider venom appears to be a neurotoxin which causes progressive paralysis and is ultimately fatal due to suffocation as the victim's diaphragm succumbs and ceases to function. The poison's effects set in relatively quickly, with complete paralysis after 720 seconds (10 time units) and with death usually occurring after 1300 seconds. In terms of Fortress mode, and depending on the speed of the victim, the venom will paralyze an infected dwarf within two steps and they will die of suffocation soon after.

Giant cave spider venom is only deadly on relatively small creatures, unlike giant desert scorpion venom. It only tends to induce mild paralysis of members on large things such as giants.

Due to the spider only attacking the head of a webbed dwarf, a pair of dwarves with steel helmets and weapons is more than a match for a lone GCS. The coding for all creatures sets headshots as the number one priority if possible, and the web ensures that a headshot is indeed always possible. You may want to avoid using untrained dwarves for this though, because the spider will still counterattack if the dwarf misses, potentially landing a blow on an unprotected area of the dwarf.

Fortunately (or unfortunately...), giant cave spiders tend to take time to kill their prey, giving you time to kill the GCS and save the dwarf, if you are similarly inclined of course. You may however not be able to save the dwarf from the GCS poison.

Capturing
Due to the considerable value of giant cave spider silk, many players attempt to capture a live spider and set up a silk farm to boost their fortress's economy. While simply opening a path to the caverns and lining it with cage traps may eventually work, a much more effective method is to take advantage of one peculiar behavior of building destroyers: simply build a wooden door within the caverns and surround it with cage traps (to a distance of at least 2 tiles), and any giant cave spider (or giant toad, giant olm, cave crocodile, etc.) that wanders relatively close enough to the door will immediately charge toward it and be captured. Or, if you have enough mechanisms, cages and dwarfpower to spare, cage trap all of the cavern exits. If you are extremely lucky, a migrant will arrive with an already tamed GCS.

Farming Silk
Silk farming

Giant cave spiders can be a very lucrative and nearly-inexhaustible source of silk thread for your weavers. The general idea is to expose the spider to a target, causing it to spew webs which can later be collected. Well-designed silk farms can maximize safety and production, and greatly increase fortress wealth.

Live training
:Live training

Pit an entirely metal-armored dwarf (the metal used seems to be unimportant) against a wild giant cave spider. Enjoy as the dwarf gets webbed, then the GCS attempts to bite the dwarf, but fails due to armor.

As it will never attempt any other attack, the GCS will keep biting metal, fail to injure the dwarf, and each attack will train your dwarf in armor using far faster than training or sparring.

As you probably don't want to kill something as rare and precious as a giant cave spider for just training armor user on a dwarf, you may want to set the training area on a lever-linked bridge, then pull the lever and fling/let fall the GCS on cage traps, therefore separating harmlessly the dwarf and the GCS.

Two dwarves can get married after having a romantic relationship together. Instantly after marriage those dwarves usually make a wedding party, if there is an available room, such as a statue garden, or a dining room marked as a meeting hall. Dwarves marry for life; a dwarf whose spouse dies will not remarry. The death of a spouse will give a dwarf an unhappy thought.

Dwarves will cancel their current task when getting married.

Dwarves must be within 10 years of each other in age, and must not be children or babies, to enter into a romantic relationship. Being friends may be a prerequisite as well. The 10-year restriction only applies in fortress mode, so incoming pregenerated dwarves (i.e. migrants) may have a larger gap between their ages. No marriage between siblings has been observed, but cousins or other distant relatives can marry each other.

Unlike previous versions, dwarves do not have to be of the opposite gender to be romantically involved or get married. Gay marriages can in fact happen, both in world-gen and in gameplay, albeit more rarely than a heterosexual marriage. Sexual orientation is controlled by the ORIENTATION creature token, by default favouring heterosexuality as a majority.

The creature token works like this: . For instance, adding ORIENTATION to any caste makes 5% of the caste disinterested in male companionship, 20% may take a male lover but will never marry while 75% may marry a male dwarf. Adding ORIENTATION and ORIENTATION to both castes would effectively make them behave asexual with no interest in partnering up and having children which is a fun way to remove an unwanted species.

Dwarves with similar professions are more likely to get married, presumably because they spend more time together than with dwarves they meet when on break. For example, two miners are likely to become romantically involved, especially in a fort that focuses on mining, since they spend time together frequently.

To enter into a romantic relationship, dwarves must be allowed to idle together in the same room. They will socialize and build relationships. If they are compatible in terms of age and marital status, they will eventually become lovers and then marry. If not, they will simply become friends. Dwarves with too little free time will not have time for romance. Very occasionally, a couple may stay in the "Lover" stage perpetually without ever being married and without breaking off the relationship.

Married dwarves may sleep together. Because of this, the couple only requires one bed, and any bedroom claimed by or assigned to one spouse will automatically be assigned to both. This also applies to tables, if they are assigned specifically to a dwarf.

In a heterosexual couple, a wife will give birth to a baby every year, until she or her husband dies, or until the fortress's child limit is reached. There are no visible signs of pregnancy, and the only effective means of contraception (other than the child limit) is physical isolation. However, that doesn't mean a pregnancy will always result in a baby. Pregnancies may end in miscarriage if the dwarf is starving, dehydrated, sustains an injury, etc., which can lead to tantrums from your now miserable dwarf and possibly a downward spiral of fun.

In the Relationships screen (v-z-r), Husband or Wife tops the list, ranked even above their deity. Their children are at the top of the Relationships list, above the deity and below the spouse.

Many marriages seem to occur during springtime or early summer.

Some noble positions, including the monarch, give their "consorts" an honorary title without any tangible privileges.

By adding to either caste you can specify their likelihood of being sexually attracted to males. For instance, adding ORIENTATION to the female caste makes 75% disinterested in male dwarves, while 20% may take a male lover and 5% may marry a male dwarf.

An ominous, hooting, three-eyed, four-armed creature that preys on unwary adventurers. In spite of the description, stranglers are smaller than a dwarf and should not pose too great a threat to an experienced fighter. Encounters are rare, as they appear only in evil tropical forests. They seem to have a liking for strangling adventurers resting in such areas, which is quite fitting.

Despite being smaller than an adult sheep, stranglers produce twice the butchering returns, at twice the value, making them well-worth harvesting if they appear near your fortress. Though they cannot be tamed, some dwarves still express a preference for strangler's resounding hoots, graceful leaps, toothy maw, or three eyes.

Beak dogs are a freakish species of gorilla-sized pack hunters found in evil swamplands. They appear in groups of three to seven and occupy the same ecological niche that wolves do in more normal surroundings. In the fortress-embarking flavor screen you are sometimes warned to strike the earth quickly "ere the wolves get hungry", but in the actual game wolves are too small to opportunistically attack dwarves, preferring to predate on smaller creatures instead. Beak dogs, by contrast, are not held back by such a deficiency: they are close to four times as large as a wolf (two and a half times the size of an average dwarf), and the <tt>[LARGE_PREDATOR]</tt> token in their raw files that they share with wolves means that they will snack on any dwarves that appear before them, given the chance. This obviously makes them very dangerous.

Beak dogs are an evil creature with the <tt>[MOUNT]</tt> tag, and thus are a popular choice for mounts in goblin sieges: you may be visited by them even if your fort is not founded in a beak dog biome. Dwarves themselves cannot tame beak dogs, and so the only thing you can do with beak dogs (without modding) is kill and process them. As a nice perk, their parts are worth twice as much as boring dog parts. Toady One has said that they are based on a variety of sources.
Foul Blendecs are the evil counterparts of Satyrs. Blendecs can be dangerous if encountered by the unprepared - they travel in packs, actively attack nearby targets, and are the same size as a dwarf. Blendecs have a slight advantage over many other creatures by virtue of their eyelessness - they can see just fine, and it's impossible to take that away from them. Fortunately, they're relatively rare, and only show up in certain evil forests.

Blizzard men are creatures found in evil sections of the glacier and tundra biomes; while their name is similar to that of the magma man and amethyst man, they lack the building destroyer tag. Goblins have been seen to bring these along with them for sieges.

Do not try killing this with hammerdwarves unless you want to beat the living snuff out of it and watch it kill your dwarves... through attrition and starvation as they ceaselessly barrage him with bone crushing strikes as he lies there and takes it like a real man. An edged weapon is suggested because they don't seem to die unless severed.

Blizzard men give any unarmed dwarves they encounter a hard time, followed by death. Because of this, to avoid casualties, it's best to either build an ice wall around where you're settling (since ice is easy to get on glaciers and won't melt in that environment) with a door to the outside that is usually locked, or keep unarmed workers underground while your guards stay close to the surface. One or two starting dwarves selected as either a swordsdwarf or an axedwarf and given proper equipment will take down invading Blizzard men and will protect your workers, letting you focus on more important matters, such as building your fortress and getting needed resources. A novice marksdwarf/hammerdwarf with a copper crossbow and copper bolts was able to take down a single blizzard man alone.

In Dwarf Fortress, a creature is defined as any animate, normally-mobile (and for the sake of this article, non-vermin) being that can interact with the world. Although most creatures are animals, dwarves, giant cave spiders, and even megabeasts are all also considered creatures. Various creatures can and will interact with a fortress or adventure in many different ways.

Reading the Table
CreatureCurrent table head
|}
The above columns indicate, in order:

Symbol: The symbol assigned to the creature, how you will see it without a graphic set.

Name: The name of the creature as it shows up ingame.

Hostile: If "Yes" then the creature will attack on sight, if "No" then the creature is either neutral or friendly. Undead creatures are always hostile to living things.

Food Source: If "Yes" then the creature can be butchered into edible substance that your dwarves will feed on.

Adult Body Size: The average size of the creature when an adult. This can be anywhere from 500 for a rabbit to 25,000,000 for a dragon. More or less equals the creature's weight in grams. These sizes do not correspond to the sizes which trigger pressure plates. Size is modified with height and broadness (ie. incredible skinny and short is below the average weight, while a fat and tall one is above it).

Pet Value: This is the value the creature can be bought and sold for as a pet during trading.

Biome: Where the creature can be found.

Features: Any special features the creature possesses, these can include things such as causing a syndrome, breathing fire, or spinning webs.
