An '''aquifer''' is a subterranean layer of {{l|water}}-bearing rock or {{l|soil}}. Attempts to mine through them will result in the mined-out squares immediately filling with {{l|water}}, effectively halting excavation at or below their level. This, in conjunction with the fact that they are often located in areas rich in {{l|loam}}, and {{l|sand}}, makes it difficult to find great quantities of {{l|stone}} in areas with aquifers, making for more challenging gameplay.

== Dealing with aquifers ==

===The ore method===
On maps where the aquifer is not held in a layer of soil, but instead is held in a {{L|sedimentary layer|sedimentary layer}} such as sandstone, it may be possible to tunnel down through deposits of ore such as magnetite. For this to work you have to find a spot where there is coincidentally an ore deposit on each Z-level you need to dig through. This is only possible through tiresome trial and error, or through the use of a utility like reveal.exe.

===The magma/obsidian method===
If you have access to a supply of magma, you can create your own obsidian caissons. By channeling into the aquifer layer and then filling these channels with magma, it is possible to create a wall of obsidian between your working area and the {{l|water}}-bearing rock or {{l|soil}}. However, changes to world generation with the last version have made this method more difficult than it once was, as it is now harder to find magma vents that extend above the aquifer level.

===The cave-in method===
If there are enough layers above the aquifer, then letting non aquifer rock fall into the aquifer layer gives an area of dig-able rock. This requires at least 2 natural dry layers. If multiple aquifer layers are to be breached, things get more complicated. First {{l| channel}} out the area of aquifer that will be replaced. Then dig out all connecting floors and walls to the block that will fall (build a support to hold it until you are ready for collision). A {{l| burrow}} may be useful to assign unnecessary dwarves to a safe area. When everyone is clear, de-construct the support with a lever. (If you forgot to bring stone, then you may instead build a constructed floor to support it, designate it to be destroyed, and have a {{l|hospital}} standing ready in case the unlucky one survives.)

After the collapse, do not dig out the outer edge of the fallen rock.

===The freezing method===

If you are playing in a freezing or very cold landscape, basically, where it snows in winter and instantly freezes water, you can dig out a 3x3 hole in the ground using channels, and make it deeper and deeper until you reach the aquifer level. Once you reach the damp rock, tunnel into it with an up/down staircase - the incoming water will freeze after a few moments. The central square of the 3x3 hole should be tunnelable ice, so you can get to the rock beneath. If there are two aquifer levels, for example, you can just make a larger initial hole, and make a smaller one for the level after.

If your fortress is in a zone that gets warm, build walls around the inside of the hole to stop the water coming in once the ice melts.
'''Metal''' is a {{L|material}} extracted from {{L|ore}} at a {{L|smelter}}, turning the ore into '''bars''' of pure metal. (One {{L|adamantine|special metal}} becomes {{L|wafer}}s instead of bars.) It is sometimes combined with other materials to form an '''alloy''' metal, which is also measured by the bar. An alloy usually improves on the properties of its components to give more uses or increased {{L|Item value|value}}. The metal bars resulting from {{L|smelting}} are used to make items such as {{L|weapon}}s, {{L|armor}}, {{L|furniture}}, and {{L|crafts}} at a {{L|Metalsmith's forge|forge}}.

Smelting pure ores into the corresponding bars raises the base value from that of stone (3) to that of bars (5). This value is then multiplied against the {{L|value#Material multipliers|material multiplier}} of the metal to give the final value for the bar.

==Alloys==
There are only eleven pure metals in Dwarf Fortress (plus a twelfth {{L|Adamantine|special metal}}). Many of these can be mixed together to create '''alloys''' of one type or another, of which there are another fourteen. In some cases making alloys will result in an overall increase in value, or the resultant alloy will be more powerful when used to forge weapons or armor, though many alloys result in no overall increase in utility or {{L|Wealth|created wealth}}. (These increases in value can be compared in the "Difference" column of the below table.)

The main use of these alloys is to allow you to stretch any useful metals you have too few of or to create items with distinct colors (for instance, {{L|rose gold}} is {{L|Color schemes|magenta}}) for furniture, color-coding rooms or levers, or artistic constructions (including {{L|floor}} mosaics). In some cases ({{L|bronze}}, for example) an additional benefit is reduced fuel consumption, as you can create multiple bars of some alloys directly from raw ores with only one {{L|smelter}} task, bypassing the need to first make bars of the pure metals (and thus using only one fuel unit to produce multiple bars). The number of bars used to create an alloy always equals the number of bars produced: the number of bars input equals the number of bars of output.

<!-- 40d article's section on maximizing value not copied over, as it doesn't seem so relevant in DF2010 with increased utility for some alloys and general increases in metal abundance -->

For a full chart of recipes for alloys, see {{L|smelting}}.
*''Combat information'' is used internally by the game to determine the combat properties of weapons and armor made from this metal:
:'''Density''': Used in conjunction with other factors - heavier weapons (higher numbers) hit with more force, light weapons tend to have less penetration.
:'''Impact yield''': Used for blunt-force combat; ''higher'' is better. This is the raw value divided by 109 (i.e., GPa).
:'''Impact fracture''': Used for blunt-force combat; ''higher'' is better. This is the raw value divided by 109 (i.e., GPa).
:'''Impact elasticity''': Used for blunt-force combat; ''lower'' is better. This is the raw value.
:'''Shear yield''': Used for cutting calculations in combat; ''higher'' is better. This is the raw value divided by 106 (i.e., MPa).
:'''Shear fracture''': Used for cutting calculations in combat; ''higher'' is better. This is the raw value divided by 106 (i.e., MPa).
:'''Shear elasticity''': Used for cutting calculations in combat; ''lower'' is better. This is the raw value.

'''Preliminary Analysis'''

It's interesting to note that the material order has been changed from previous versions. Adamantine and Steel still take first and second place respectively, but Bronze is now the third best material in the game. Beyond which, Iron has been demoted and is in a close tie with copper as to being the second worst material. Iron makes negligibly better blunt weapons and possibly better cutting weapons. The cutting weapon evaluation really depends on the importance of the various stats as copper has better shear fracture and shear elasticity than iron. As in older versions however, silver continues to hold steady as the worst material available (no longer beneficial with wooden training weapons being available now).
'''Native platinum''' is an ore of {{L|platinum}}, one of the two most valuable common metals (the other being {{L|aluminum}}).

When mined, hunks of native platinum are called '''platinum nuggets'''.

Platinum can occur in veins in bodies of magnetite; these veins can extend far outside the magnetite they originate from, and the vein may even be interrupted at the magnetite cluster border.

==Possible bug==
Although the raw entries for native platinum indicate that it appears as veins within olivine, a bug causes it to only appear in small clusters (even in the absence of chromite).{{verify}}

'''Steel''' is the best common metal for smithing {{L|weapons}} and {{L|armor}}. Products made with steel have a very high value, equal to that of {{L|gold}}.

Steel can be smelted at a {{L|smelter}} by a {{L|dwarf}} with the {{L|furnace operator}} {{l|labor}} activated.

==Recipe==
Steel production is fairly complex compared to the creation of other alloys. ''Note'': in steelmaking, {{L|coke}} or charcoal is used as an ingredient, not as a {{L|fuel}}. If you are using a normal (non-magma powered) smelter, extra fuel will be required to power the smelter.

The first step is '''to create {{l|pig iron}}''':

*1 bar of iron
*1 {{l|flux}} stone
*1 unit of fuel
'''Produces''':
*1 bar of pig iron

The second step combines the pig iron with more iron '''to produce steel''':
*1 bar of iron
*1 bar of pig iron
*1 flux stone
*1 unit of fuel
'''Produces''':
*2 bars of steel

The total reaction consumes 2 units of flux, 2 units of fuel, and 2 bars of iron. This produces 2 bars of steel.
Aluminum is one of the two highest-valued common metals in the game (the other being {{l|platinum}}). It is extremely light, for a metal.

Aluminum can be used as decoration, or to create {{l|furniture}} and other objects. Aluminum cannot be forged into {{l|weapons}} or {{l|armor}}.
'''Platinum''' is an extremely valuable metal, second only to {{L|adamantine}}. It has the same value as {{L|aluminum}}, distinguished by the fact that while platinum is the heaviest metal, aluminum is the lightest metal (again, not including {{L|adamantine}}).

The only real differences between platinum and aluminum are that platinum is magma-safe and almost ten times heavier.
