Boozeanator: Finished goods / tools + wax = honeycomb stockpile

{{quality|Exceptional|11:32, 31 March 2011 (UTC)}}{{av}}
{{buggy}}
The '''beekeeping industry''' is a straightforward process that allows a fortress to produce food ({{L|honey}}, {{L|royal jelly}}), drink ({{L|mead}}), and craftable items ({{L|wax}}).

First up you need an area that can support {{L|honey bee}}s ({{L|bumblebee}}s can't be used). These {{L|vermin}}-type creatures occur in any non-freezing {{L|biome}}. After finding a colony of bees, the next step is to create an artificial {{l|hive}} in the {{L|craftsdwarf's workshop}}, {{L|kiln}} or {{L|metalsmith's forge}} using stone, wood, ceramics or metal.

Construction of the hive is then done by a dwarf with the {{L|beekeeping}} labor enabled, and must be made in a tile adjacent to an outside tile. Unless the player specifies otherwise (with {{K|q}}-{{K|c}}), the beekeeper will then automatically find the nearest live hive and transfer it to the artificial hive.

For each empty built hive being set to 'Install colony when ready', an 'Install Colony in Hive' task will be automatically added to the job list. Beekeepers would not take the job unless there is a wild colony of honey bees or ready to split domestic colony in a hive. Multiple beekeepers/hives can task the same colony, see bugs section

From there the player has two options:
* The player may toggle the hive (using {{K|q}}-{{K|g}}) so that the product is not automatically gathered. This will cause the hive to grow, allowing it to be split into additional artificial hives.
* If the player chooses to have the hive harvested, a beekeeper will approach the hive after 6 months{{verify}} or so and transfer royal jelly to an empty {{L|jug}} and produce a {{L|honeycomb}}.

By setting Hives to either be harvested, or grown until splittable, a player can enjoy sustainable honey harvesting, even without access to more wild honey bees (for instance, if your fortress is under siege). The hives set to be collected will be periodically destroyed in order to yield honey, and then refreshed by splitting off bees from the non gathering hives.

The royal jelly is counted as an edible item and can be cooked or eaten as is. The honeycomb requires a bit more effort: it must be brought to a {{L|screw press}} to be turned into honey, which is also edible and can be cooked. Pressing a honeycomb also requires an empty jug.

That honey can then be brought to a {{L|still}} and, when combined with a non-absorbent {{L|barrel}}, can create mead.

The pressed honeycomb can be brought to a {{L|craftsdwarf's workshop}} and turned into wax {{L|crafts}}.

==Examining hives==
Interacting with a hive ({{K|q}}) will show:

* Which options have been set for that hive (install colony or don't, gather products or save for split).
* Whether it has {{DFtext|Outdoor access|2:1}} or {{DFtext|No outdoor access|4:1}}.
* If the hive is {{DFtext|Ready to be split|2:1}}.

If interacting with the hive shows {{DFtext|Not ready to be split|7:0}} then it might mean it has a colony too small to be split, or that it has no colony at all. To see if a hive has a colony, uses "view items in buildings" ({{K|t}}), which will show an item {{L|stack}} of thousands of bees if there's a colony. {{K|t}} will also show if the hive has a honey comb or lump of royal jelly.

==Artificial hive limits==

If your fortress has 41 or more inhabited artificial hives, but less than 60, then interacting with a hive ({{K|q}}) will show:

{{Gametext|Too many hives|6:1}}
{{Gametext|* Output restricted|6:0}}

Presumably this means that existing artificial hives grow more slowly. {{Verify}}

Having more than 41 or more than 60 inhabited artificial hives does not appear to prevent new wild hives from appearing, and these can still be transferred to empty artificial hives.

If you fortress has 60 or more inhabited artificial hives, then interacting with a hive ({{K|q}}) will show:

{{Gametext|Too many hives|4:1}}
{{Gametext|* No output|4:1}}

Presumably this means that existing artificial hives no longer grow, or that grown hives can't be split. {{Verify}}

==Streamlining production==
To create a stockpile that accepts only honeycombs, start with a finished goods stockpile, turn off all types except tools, and all materials except wax.

==Bugs==
*Dwarves have a hard time splitting hives. They also have a hard time keeping track of wild colonies of bees that die out. Having the beekeeping labor enabled on only one dwarf at a time may alleviate these problems. See {{bug|3981}} and related bugs.
*Removing and rebuilding empty hives usually fixes beekeepers stuck trying to install colonies

Boozeanator: You can deconstruct hives to harvest the honeycomb at the cost of the royal jelly.

{{Quality|Fine}}{{av}}

A hive is a building used to house {{L|honey bee}}s. A {{L|tool|hive}} must first be created in a workshop before it can be {{k|b}}uilt. Hives can be created at a craftsdwarf's workshop, kiln, glass furnace or metalsmith's forge using stone, wood, ceramics, glass or metal. Once a hive is created, it is {{k|b}}uilt using the {{k|alt}}+{{k|H}} hotkey. Hives are categorized as {{L|tool|Tools}} in {{L|Finished goods}} {{L|stockpile|stockpiles}}.

In order to house bees, a hive must be constructed on or adjacent to a tile that is {{L|Tile attributes|above ground}}. A dwarf with the {{L|beekeeping}} labor enabled will place bees in any hive toggled to "install colony when ready," so long as he or she has access to a preexisting colony of wild bees, or another hive that is ready to be split.

You can find out if a hive has bees, and whether or not it has a honeycomb ready to collect by using the View I{{k|t}}ems in Buildings menu.

Once a hive contains bees, it will eventually become "ready to be split," which will allow a beekeeper to populate an empty hive using bees from the original. In order to do that, you only have to place an empty hive and your beekeeper will do it automatically If the original hive is set as "Install colony when ready". Doing this leaves the original hive populated, however it will be some time before it again becomes ready for splitting. Bees cannot be brought with on embark, so starting the beekeeping industry requires at least one wild colony. Dwarven hives appear to magically transform {{L|bumblebee}}s into honey bees, so a wild bumblebee colony will work if no honey bee colony exists on the map.

Populated hives will produce a honeycomb and a royal jelly at some point in time after they become ready to be split. If the hive is toggled to "gather any products," a beekeeper will harvest the {{L|honeycomb}} and {{L|royal jelly}}, assuming he has access to a suitable {{L|jug}} in which to put the royal jelly. Deconstructing the hive manually ({{k|q}} {{k|x}}) will release the honeycomb for collection but waste the royal jelly which will spill out on the ground. Both these processes kill the bees. Royal jelly can be eaten or cooked, and the honeycomb is processed at a {{L|screw press}} workshop to yield {{L|wax}} and {{L|honey}}.

It may be possible to move a hive, but the easiest way to move it is to simply split one into the new location, turn off the original one, and harvest it.

Honeybees in their artificial hive can and will sting your dwarves. Worker bees occasionally appear within a few tiles of a hive and are presumed to be responsible for stinging dwarves. It is likely that an inexperienced beekeeper will receive a bee sting when gathering the products of a hive. Additionally, it has been observed that placing a {{L|Activity zone#Meeting Area|Meeting zone}} next to hives puts idle dwarves at serious risk of being stung.

Bee stings currently seem to be inconsequential. Bee stings do not appear to be recorded as wounds, but the {{L|Health screen}} will show "Slight pain" for the stung dwarf, which can trigger a "recover wounded" task. This can trigger good thoughts about being rescued and resting, even though the hospital stay was instantaneous. Being stung does not seem to produce a bad thought. But don't be surprised if your refuse pile fills up with bees that die after stinging your dwarves.

There appears to be an upper limit of 60 active colonies in built hives. Once you hit that limit, additional hives will have the message "Too many hives *No output" when examined (though this limit can be exceeded by installing wild colonies into artificial hives). There's also a "soft" limit of 40 active colonies, past which hives will have the message "Too many hives *Restricted output"; presumably this means that these colonies grow more slowly. {{Verify}}

{{av}}
{{Quality|Exceptional}}

'''Wood''' is produced by {{L|designation|{{Key|d}}esignating}} {{L|tree|{{Key|t}}rees}} to be chopped down. Any {{L|dwarf}} with the {{L|wood cutting}} {{L|labor}} enabled and access to a {{L|battle axe}} will cut down the trees, which will turn one tree into one '''log''', the raw form of wood.

Only {{L|nether-cap}} wood is {{L|magma-safe}}.

"'''Timber'''" is the name of the ninth month of the dwarven {{L|calendar}}, covering late Fall.

==Growing==

{{L|Tree}}s start their lives as saplings. Saplings cannot be cut down until they mature into full-grown trees, which can take several years. Saplings will randomly appear in appropriate {{L|soil}} (above and below ground) and {{L|mud}}dy underground rock (underground areas will only start to sprout saplings once you have hit the {{L|caverns}}) to provide a slow (but steady) supply of wood. Fully-grown trees will impede units' movement, so be sure to clear them out of active corridors.

==Sources==

Besides cutting down trees, wood (and some wooden goods, such as {{L|barrel}}s) is often available from the {{L|elf|elven}}, {{L|dwarf|dwarven}} and {{L|human}} {{L|caravan}}s. Wood can also be purchased before embarking. Wood is quite inexpensive, costing only 3☼ per log, and you may wish to bring a large number of logs when embarking in order to jump-start your {{L|wood industry}}. The {{L|wagon (embark)|wagon}} you start the game with can also be dismantled for three logs.

==Considerations==

===Reasons you need wood===
*To build {{L|bed}}s
**Without beds your dwarves will get unhappy thoughts from sleeping on the ground
*To build {{L|water wheel}}s and {{L|windmill}}s, as well as {{L|axle}}s
**Without wood, you cannot generate ''or'' transfer {{L|power}}.
*To build {{L|siege engine}}s and ballista bolts
**These can be very effective defenses when traps fail.
*If you want {{L|obsidian}} {{L|short sword}}s, they require one obsidian stone and one wood each (these swords likely consist of a wooden hilt with an obsidian blade or, as a more exotic alternative, a thin wooden "paddle" with sharp flakes of obsidian forming sharp edges, like the Aztec [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Macuahuitl macuahuitl]).
**If you have access to obsidian, these can be a great source of quick weaponry early in the game, before any steel works are up to speed. Even on a tree-lite map, each weapon takes less wood to produce than a steel weapon (unless you are using {{L|magma}} to fuel your {{L|smelter}}s and {{L|forge}}s and have access to {{L|bituminous coal|bituminous coal}} and {{L|lignite|lignite}}).
*To be burnt for {{L|ash}}, which is used in {{L|Glass_industry|glass making}}, {{L|Soap|soap making}}, {{L|Glazing|glazing}}, and for fertilizing crops.

===Reasons you want wood===
*It is simpler to make items from wood.
**For instance, it only takes one log to produce a {{L|bin}}, {{L|barrel}}, {{L|bucket}}, or {{L|cage}}; but if you forge them instead then they'll take three metal {{L|bar}}s (though in versions 0.31.01-0.31.25, a bug causes metal items to only require 1 bar).
*All metalworks ({{L|smelter}}s, {{L|forge}}s), {{L|glass}}works and {{L|ceramic}} {{L|kiln}}s are either coal-{{L|fuel}}ed or magma-fueled. If you are planning on having any sort of serious metal or glass production, then you're going to need either a lot of wood, or {{L|magma}} (and {{L|charcoal}} or {{L|bituminous coal|coal}} for {{L|steel}}).
*Wooden training {{L|weapon}}s are useful for military training started shortly after embark should you feel the need
*{{L|Crossbow}}s can be made from wood (or {{L|bone}}) and may be preferred if you have a skilled {{L|bowyer}} but not a skilled {{L|weaponsmith}}.

===Reasons you don't need much wood===
*Everything other than beds, axles, windmills, water wheels, ''obsidian'' shortswords, siege engine parts, and ballista bolts can be made without the use of wood.
** In particular, {{L|barrel}}s can be replaced by stone {{L|pot}}s without having to use either fuel or magma.
*Once you have {{L|magma}} then you don't need wood for fuel. If you have coal, you don't need (as much) wood to produce {{L|charcoal}} for {{L|steel}}. If you have both, you don't need wood to produce metal or steel products.
**({{L|Bituminous coal}} ''without'' magma triples the effective output of wood, {{L|lignite}} doubles it.)

==Weight==
The weight of a 'unit' of each type of wood is half their density; the densities for each individual type of wood is listed under the appropriate {{L|tree}}. Wood has a default [SOLID_DENSITY] of 500, making it about three times lighter than most stone and fifteen times lighter than iron. Feather tree wood is the lightest, with a density of 100, and blood thorn wood is the heaviest, with a density of 1250. Cedar wood, density 380, and glumprong wood, density 1200 are also notable. However, since average wood is relatively light to begin with, with the possible exception of wood {{L|hauling}}, this makes (almost?) no practical difference in the daily routine of a fortress or your dwarves.
