It's used on [[cv:thread]], but I can't seem to move it to a better title. I think it's because of the <s>accent</s> umlaut - is there any way you can change its name manually in the database? == Creature token page seems to be causing your server trouble ==

http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2012:Creature_token comes up with a completely blank (like, about:blank blank) for me and pretty much everyone else I've asked about it. I can get the contents by pulling them from google's cache, but the site itself seems to refuse to let you load it. From experience as a webhost, this generally means that the page has encountered a critical error in its scripting, which it will dump in the error log instead of reporting to the user, for security reasons. It appears that the TitleIsAlwaysKnown is the problem, presumably because it takes a lot of time to render on a large page like [[creature token]]. Unfortunately, this is the hook that makes links and searching work. Back in 2012, DrSazar added the poorly-named [http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/File:Sperm.jpg [File:Sperm.jpg], a photograph of a sperm whale. At some point after May 2013 the photograph [http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php?title=DF2014:Sperm_whale&oldid=203603 changed into an image of actual sperm], presumably drawn from wikimedia commons. The wiki software shouldn't be losing images, or replacing local images with reference images. Hi Briess! lethosor directed me here from IRC.

Making the wiki available offline has been discussed before by many different people. [http://sebsauvage.net/wiki/doku.php?id=df_portable_wiki Some even manage] something almost useful. You've helped the situation by making the XML dumps available, however so much information in the wiki is locked behind templates that depend on custom PHP extensions to expand properly. I want to pick up this torch and produce something usable and useful for everyone.

My plan is simple.

# Massage the DF2014 namespace into a set of static HTML documents
# Bundle these documents in [http://kapeli.com/docsets the docset format]
# Release the docset in [http://kapeli.com/dash Dash] on OSX and [zealdocs.org Zeal] on Windows and Linux.

Dash/Zeal provide fast instant search and they're designed for searching through sets of documents already.

Step 1 is where all the work takes place of course. I want to do it in a way that is as light on the existing infrastructure as possible. Using the [http://dwarffortresswiki.org/api.php wiki's API] and the [https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/API:Expandtemplates action:expandtemplates] feature, I can expand the XML dump into rendered HTML. But this is essentially scraping the wiki, which isn't good.

Instead, I would like to setup my own instance of the wiki and run all the processing locally.

If you're referring to diagrams, you can find the relevant CSS in the [https://github.com/DF-Wiki/DFDiagram/blob/master/modules/ext.DFDiagram.css DFDiagram extension] (they're converted into <canvas> elements on the client side by default, but you can disable that in your [[Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-dfdiagram|preferences]] or simply by parsing the wikitext, which should generate a HTML table instead). == Creature token page seems to be causing your server trouble ==

http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2012:Creature_token comes up with a completely blank (like, about:blank blank) for me and pretty much everyone else I've asked about it. I can get the contents by pulling them from google's cache, but the site itself seems to refuse to let you load it. From experience as a webhost, this generally means that the page has encountered a critical error in its scripting, which it will dump in the error log instead of reporting to the user, for security reasons. It appears that the TitleIsAlwaysKnown is the problem, presumably because it takes a lot of time to render on a large page like [[creature token]]. Unfortunately, this is the hook that makes links and searching work. Making the wiki available offline has been discussed before by many different people. [http://sebsauvage.net/wiki/doku.php?id=df_portable_wiki Some even manage] something almost useful. You've helped the situation by making the XML dumps available, however so much information in the wiki is locked behind templates that depend on custom PHP extensions to expand properly. I want to pick up this torch and produce something usable and useful for everyone.

My plan is simple.

# Massage the DF2014 namespace into a set of static HTML documents
# Bundle these documents in [http://kapeli.com/docsets the docset format]
# Release the docset in [http://kapeli.com/dash Dash] on OSX and [zealdocs.org Zeal] on Windows and Linux.

Dash/Zeal provide fast instant search and they're designed for searching through sets of documents already.

Step 1 is where all the work takes place of course. I want to do it in a way that is as light on the existing infrastructure as possible. Using the [http://dwarffortresswiki.org/api.php wiki's API] and the [https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/API:Expandtemplates action:expandtemplates] feature, I can expand the XML dump into rendered HTML. But this is essentially scraping the wiki, which isn't good.

Instead, I would like to setup my own instance of the wiki and run all the processing locally.

If you're referring to diagrams, you can find the relevant CSS in the [https://github.com/DF-Wiki/DFDiagram/blob/master/modules/ext.DFDiagram.css DFDiagram extension] (they're converted into <canvas> elements on the client side by default, but you can disable that in your [[Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-dfdiagram|preferences]] or simply by parsing the wikitext, which should generate a HTML table instead). |When you perform a task for an entity, you currently can an affiliation with it, but that's all. This needs to be expanded greatly. Not only should you be given various positions of responsibility, but you should also become accepted by the group in question and given some way of obtaining living space, equipment, pay, etc. as appropriate. It would also be good for tasks to be appropriate for the goals of the entity, and where possible, to soften the notion of a task -- if you do something that benefits a group, even if the group didn't explicitly ask for it, this should raise your standing with them in general (to the extent that the action/benefit is detectable from a technical standpoint), and a person at an appropriate position within a group should in some circumstances be able to act under their own power with entity subordinates. The primary target entities/positions here for version 1 are soldiers (either proper ones or loosely defined mead hall groups), caravan guards, bandits and religious groups.

Whether or not the dead rise or there are just traps or nothing at all can also depend on all sorts of things, mainly the civilization in question and what happened to ruin it in the first place. The first target would be world gen battlefields, but battlefields that occur once armies are fighting need to be handled as well, whether you are present as an adventurer or dwarven army or not.

|Right now, an abandoned fortress is basically a scattered mass of crap. If any item is moved, there should at least be a plausible reason for it to happen. Additionally, since tracking too many items in fortress mode can lead to problems, one early idea was to add additional items after abandonment that would flesh out the fortress, such as production logs and diaries. These would have to be squared with reclaim, however. Depending on how that works out, the items themselves might occur during standard play instead or not at all. In any case, various facts about production and prominent (and other) artisans need to be tracked and available after sufficient poking around (or earlier should the parameters call for it, as with historical events).

Crimes should not immediately be tied to the adventurer, and in large enough cities, there should be enough of an underbelly to be a successful criminal without even leaving town, at least for a while. None of the existing cities are really large enough for this right now, though the most populous cities of large empires should be after the relevant dev items are complete. Whether general criminal behavior will be extended to dwarf mode, beyond what's there now, is an open question.

:From what I remember, size is a major issue with this wiki (due to the multiple namespaces). There used to be a dump of the DF2012 namespace listed in the announcements box ([http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php?title=Dwarf_Fortress_Wiki:Announcements&oldid=170946]). The link was removed, but apparently it's still accessible. I just downloaded it – it's about 10 MB, and appears to contain the latest revisions of all DF2012 articles (from yesterday, July 7) that I checked (it ''doesn't'' include articles from older namespaces, however). It seems, from [[wikipedia:mw:Extension:ConfirmEdit|the ConfirmEdit page]], that ReCaptcha might not be as secure as other types of captchas. [http://wiki.uqm.stack.nl/ This wiki] seems to have solved this problem by using FancyCaptcha. While it might not be as secure (according to the page on mediawiki.org), its code is part of the extension, which means it can be easily modified to prevent automated scripts from succeeding, even if they guess the captcha correctly (check the source of the [http://wiki.uqm.stack.nl/script/index.php?title=Special:UserLogin&returnto=Main+Page&type=signup account creation page]). It may be considerably easier to set up non-English wikis on this site than on other wikis (as I mentioned above, the extensions and patches we use here would be hard to set up, even on a MediaWiki hosting site). Using this site would allow complex things (mainly templates and functions) to be used without being copied over to other wikis. Also, foreign-language wikis would tend to be a lot smaller than the main English wiki (due to fewer contributors), so size shouldn't be a problem. A few things I've found that could assist with this:
* Some templates exist that could probably be ported to this wiki: [[Wikipedia:mw:Template:Languages]] uses a lot of #ifexist checks (which could be deleted for languages we won't use at all). [[Wikipedia:meta:Template:Languages]] is similar, but adds <code>uselang=</code> to change the interface language for foreign-language pages (which could also be specified in the preferences, so I'm not sure how useful this is).
* [[Wikipedia:mw:Extension:Translate|Extension:Translate]] seems promising (it's used on some WMF wikis) - I haven't looked into it much, but I'll test it out when I get a chance.

Update: [[Wikipedia:mw:Extension:Translate|Extension:Translate]] is working very well - all that's required is adding <translate> tags around the page content. It lets any (logged-in) user edit translations by default, but pages need to be ''marked'' before they can be translated, which needs to be done by an admin by default (I'd recommend allowing at least autoconfirmed users to do this with something like <code>$wgGroupPermissions['autoconfirmed']['pagetranslation'] = true;</code>). Templates have been harder to work out than content pages - the best method I've found so far is using {{#delay:int:}} to change the displayed text based on the interface language (which I suppose is more useful to end users anyway). Unfortunately, this would require editing MediaWiki: messages, which normal users can't do... :( 
Anyway, MediaWiki 1.22 should be released soon, so it may be worth waiting to upgrade (the only useful thing I've found in 1.21 is Ajax patrolling, which I've already [[User:Lethosor/ajaxpatrol.js|implemented]]). Also, if you end up doing software upgrades, [[Wikipedia:mw:Extension:WikiEditor|Extension:WikiEditor]] and [[Wikipedia:mw:Extension:CodeEditor|Extension:CodeEditor]] (and maybe even [[Wikipedia:mw:Extension:Scribunto|Extension:Scribunto]]) could be useful (WikiEditor is extensible, so it would be easy to set up DFWiki-specific editing customizations - maybe adding a [[CP437]] palette, for example). --[[User:Lethosor|Lethosor]] ([[User talk:Lethosor|talk]]) 01:49, 22 September 2013 (UTC)

Turns out that the Translate extension SQL is ''not'' compatible with PostgreSQL. I've managed to get the tables created successfully after messing around with a bunch of SQL conversion tools (see [https://gist.github.com/lethosor/7457533 this gist]), but there are still errors in the extension files that prevent the extension from actually working. I've made a little progress (the database error on Special:Translate no longer occurs), but translation doesn't work at all for some reason (probably because update.php won't run with the SQL modifications I've made, so the installation isn't complete yet). I'm reluctant to ask, but is MySQL a possible alternative? I've found that it tends to be better-supported than other database systems on MediaWiki (SQLite is supposedly well-supported too, but I doubt it would handle a large wiki very well). There are a variety of conversion tools that look promising, such as [http://dev.mysql.com/doc/workbench/en/wb-migration-database-postgresql.html MySQL workbench], but I haven't tested them to see if/how they work. I found a couple interesting strategies that could prevent automated account registration entirely, while still allowing users to create accounts normally:
* Disabling [[wikipedia:mw:API:Account creation|the account creation API]] would block account registrations using api.php instead of [[Special:CreateAccount]]:

* If it turns out that the spammers use [[Special:CreateAccount]] instead (which is less likely), someone at MediaWiki has [https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Talk:Anti-spam_features#random_or_editable_Special:UserLogin_link suggested] renaming [[Special:UserLogin]] (or CreateAccount), which would allow it to be accessible with the navigation links but not by a direct URL. I'm not sure how this would be done, but it's probably possible since changing the wiki language changes special pages' URLs.
* Cookiepedia has their [http://www.cookipedia.co.uk/recipes_wiki/File:Vhost.conf.txt config file] publicly available, which contains IP's of many spammers. I'm not sure how up-to-date it is, but it appears to be working for them.
* Lastly, blocking requests with an empty User-Agent header has worked in the past. I doubt many current spambots would be blocked by this trick, however.

Thanks for catching my edit on {{tl|rounded info box}}. Apparently a <div> tag on the same line as Mediawiki's {| table syntax ''breaks the table''. But not the whole table. Just the ''start'' of the table. The end of the table gets parsed perfectly, which caused things that should have been inside a table to float around the page. And adding a newline before the table in the red box doesn't change anything. (Okay, that's probably because of Mediawiki's whitespace stripping, but that doesn't explain why ''every other box on the page worked'' with my change.) I would have tested it more thoroughly, except I thought that wrapping something in a <div> tag wouldn't do anything. This is why I hate Mediawiki table syntax (although HTML table syntax isn't much better. I can get the contents by pulling them from google's cache, but the site itself seems to refuse to let you load it. From experience as a webhost, this generally means that the page has encountered a critical error in its scripting, which it will dump in the error log instead of reporting to the user, for security reasons. You've helped the situation by making the XML dumps available, however so much information in the wiki is locked behind templates that depend on custom PHP extensions to expand properly. I want to pick up this torch and produce something usable and useful for everyone.

My plan is simple.

# Release the docset in [http://kapeli.com/dash Dash] on OSX and [zealdocs.org Zeal] on Windows and Linux.

Dash/Zeal provide fast instant search and they're designed for searching through sets of documents already.

Step 1 is where all the work takes place of course. I want to do it in a way that is as light on the existing infrastructure as possible. Using the [http://dwarffortresswiki.org/api.php wiki's API] and the [https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/API:Expandtemplates action:expandtemplates] feature, I can expand the XML dump into rendered HTML. But this is essentially scraping the wiki, which isn't good.

Instead, I would like to setup my own instance of the wiki and run all the processing locally.

Hi There - I'm relatively new to the DFwiki, and I noticed that some of the thread links on the Main Page don't work correctly. I logged in to try and edit the page, but when it wasn't an available option, I realized that it is probably restricted to administrators, given the 'please report vandalism' thing in the site announcements header.

The Team17 forums have closed, so the Team17 link is a dead one.
The SomethingAwful.com forums link is behind a login wall, so I'm not sure if you would want to remove this as well? I believe that they do occasionally rotate forums (such as Games) to be available to non-logged in users though, so it would perhaps be available intermittently.

I come across several cases of double redirection which, as stated both here and in the rest of the wikiverse, are not a good thing to have.

Recently I found about the [[Special:DoubleRedirects]] page. There are roughly 350 double redirects on the wiki. From experience here, they could be easily fixed, because most redirect to the alternate name of the page, instead of the proper page itself.

I have the site loaded up on my WiiU, which uses Webkit as the rendering engine, and I noticed a small issue with the positioning of the sidebar ad. I have div#p-googleadsense.portal at 160px by 655px, right on the edge of the screen. The div.body just inside is 140px by 611px, slightly smaller. However, the ins#aswitf_1_expand inside ''that'' is 160px by 600px - 20px wider than the div.body (but the same width as the .portal). This wouldn't be an issue if the ad was right on the edge of the screen, but the div.body has padding specified for 0.5em above, and 1.25em to the left (using the div#mw-panel CSS). My suggestion for fixing would be to force the ad's div.body to use no left margin (forcing this results in a fixed display until another page is loaded), but this requires a modification to the Wiki's core. Random page is not much help because it is more likely to return pages for old versions than the current. I can go to Random by namespace and click DF2014, but then if I want to keep going through random pages I have to keep hitting back and clicking it again, or make my own bookmark to that link.

It's a small thing but it would be quite handy if there was a link dedicated to Random in the current NS.

==Revisiting Redirects==

I wasn't around when the redirect policy was created, and I'm having trouble understanding the rationale. The example claims that linking [[Main:Cheese]] to [[cv:Cheese maker]] is problematic...but mainspace only ever redirects to the current version. If the best target in the current version is cheese maker, why not link to it directly? (It's not, at least for Cheese, since [[DF2012:Cheese]] exists now.) The explanation seems to be claiming that 40d articles that link to Cheese will follow the Mainspace link--but that hasn't been the case for a long while now. Articles in 40d automatically link against other articles in 40d, so that version remains internally consistent no matter where mainspace links to in the current version. For a current example, what do we gain by linking [[Main:Mead]] to [[cv:Mead]] and linking [[DF2012:Mead]] to [[DF2012:Alcohol]]?

If this really is just an outdated procedure, I recommend we drop the mummery and allow mainspace to link to cv:(best target). Double redirects ''may'' work (sometimes, but [[Main:Mead]] demonstrates a common problem where automatic redirection fails), but if they are unnecessary I think they should be avoided, partly because of problems like [[Main:Mead]] and partly because of the effort required to protect double redirects from users who believe they are problematic.--[[User:Loci|Loci]] ([[User talk:Loci|talk]]) 20:16, 8 January 2014 (UTC)

Okay, that wasn't quite as clear as I meant it to be. In general, I think this is a tricky situation. Mediawiki wasn't designed to have five content namespaces, and certainly not chains of redirects between them. The problem that was pointed out in the [[DF:REDIR|policy]] is the fact that with:
Main:Foo -> cv:Bar
pages in the cv: namespace can't use [[<nowiki/>foo]], since the namespace links modification causes it to be treated as [[<nowiki/>cv:foo]] instead, which doesn't exist. The current suggested solution is this:
Main:Foo -> cv:Foo -> cv:Bar
This fixes the problem of [[<nowiki/>foo]] not working on cv pages, but creates issues with double redirects not always working. Another solution, which is more intuitive to new editors, is:
Main:Foo -> cv:Bar
cv:Foo -> cv:Bar
Both require creating two redirects. The first method has the advantage of ''ensuring'' that the cv redirect exists (otherwise, main:foo would be a redlink), while the second has the advantage of working more reliably in a couple cases.

What I'm trying to do is make main:Foo "jump" to cv:Foo when cv:foo exists, ''even if main:foo doesn't exist'' (basically it would treat all mainspace pages as redirects to cv pages, but only if the cv page exists and not the mainspace page). I had main:Bar jumping to cv:Bar fine, but if cv:Foo redirected to cv:Bar, accessing main:Foo would mysteriously stop at cv:Foo even if I increased the redirect limit. What I'm trying to do now is follow the redirects internally, without relying on Mediawiki to do it automatically - unfortunately, that has proved to be harder than I had hoped (and I sent my web server into an infinite loop while trying). I will try to work on this some more when I get a chance, although I'm not sure when that'll be yet :(. I was finally able to get my extension to work after being motivated by one too many malfunctioning redirects. It now causes nonexistent pages in the main namespace to behave exactly like redirects to their DF2012 counterparts (when linked to, accessed directly, and transcluded). Double redirects also work (up to 100, in fact, although that was a temporary safety measure that I'll probably change). As Toady [http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/ draws closer to a new release], it might be worthwhile to discuss the addition of a new version to the wiki. The upcoming release covers two years of changes and introduces a number of new plants, foods, drinks, multi-tile trees, climbing, jumping, etc., so it is likely to have significant changes from the current DF2012. To avoid having people start new pages (and lose all the effort spent refining the prior version's page), I think it would be best to have a bot automatically copy over the DF2012 pages as a starting point for DF2014. I would suggest that these copied pages include a noticebox template mentioning that the content may be outdated, so that we can easily track which pages have been reviewed. ==Reorganizing versions==

The internet deals with moved content... poorly. Google is still linking to v0.34 pages more than a year after the switch to "DF2014", and even the wiki software still has cached links pointing to the old version pages.

I propose reorganizing versions on the wiki to avoid moving content whenever possible. Instead of having a temporary "current version" namespace that changes occasionally, all the current information gets promoted to the Main namespace. When the next version split occurs, the Main articles as of a certain revision number can be copied to the newly-created permanent "old version" namespace, while all the current information remains in Main. This not only fixes the link rot issue, but it has a few other benefits as well: fewer administrative tasks, no lockdown (a historical version of the Main pages can be copied at any point, even if the Main articles are already modified for the new version), almost all the article history is maintained in the Main article (instead of being spread unevenly across multiple versions), no "temporary" namespaces are needed, fewer problematic long redirect chains, and hopefully less user confusion (since Main gets priority in search results, etc.).

As an example, today we would not have a DF2014 namespace (which is good because "temporary" namespaces historically disappear anyway). If you ran a search for [[seed]] you'd end up at Main:seed, which would have all the current information on seeds. The version box at the top of the page would still link to the older versions of the seed article. When a new version is released, an admin would choose a revision number and copy the Main:seed article as it exists at that revision number to v0.40:seed. That's it. == Goal ==

The goal of this effort is to effectively mark articles according to the version they are about. Ultimately there are two goals:

*Allow users to know what major version (23a, 40d, etc...) an article pertains to.
*Allow editors to easily find topics for which a current version article is not complete.

Each feature or idea that has an article will feature the "up to date" version and "old" versions: (note, if an article is version independent these points do not apply)

*There will be namespaces for every major version: "DF2012" (likely to be renamed once a new save-incompatible DF version is released), "v0.31", "40d", and "23a".
*The cv: alias will redirect to the current version, ie. "{{DF:Current}}".

=== Version articles ===
There is a template that should be placed on all version-specific pages. It looks like this (though it looks different on actual articles):

An example of this template on a real page can be seen at "milk": [[{{DF:Current}}:Milk]], [[v0.31:Milk]], [[40d:Milk]], [[23a:Milk]].

This template is added by placing {{tl|av}} (or {{tl|ArticleVersion}}) at the top of an article.

The template will check the namespace of the article and use that to determine if the article pertains to the current version or not.

It will also place an article into a category based on whether or not it pertains to the current version.

One version will be considered "current", and articles in that namespace with the version template will be placed into a category marking it as such, all other articles will be put into a category marking them as Obsolete, and also placing them into a category based off of their version (from the article namespace).

With very little effort (read the [[template:av|documentation]]) every page's version template can be automatically updated when a new version arrives. This process automatically changes what namespace shows up as current on each page and what categories pages are put into. This makes it wonderfully easy the next time a new version comes around.

On this wiki, all pages in the mainspace (main namespace) that do not exist will be treated as redirects to the page of the same name in the current version's namespace. For example, [[Aardvark]] (a nonexistent page) redirects to [[{{DF:Current}}:Aardvark]]. (This can be seen by clicking on "Redirected from [[Aardvark]]" below the title on [[{{DF:Current}}:Aardvark]].)

Redirects to content in the current namespace should almost always be created in the current namespace, ''not'' the main namespace, and should use the current namespace as the namespace for the redirect. For example, [[{{DF:Current}}:Kitten]] should redirect to [[{{DF:Current}}:Cat]], not [[Cat]] or [[cv:Cat]]. In cases where a redirect does need to be created in the main namespace, use "cv" for the redirects namespace instead (this is a shortcut to the current namespace, ).

Pages in the mainspace should only redirect to an older versioned page if that content no longer exists in the current version of the game (e.g. [[Cave river]], [[Chunk]]). In these cases the cv: alias cannot be used.

Redirects inside a versioned namespace should not use the cv: alias. Instead, they should redirect to the best page within that versioned namespace (e.g. [[DF2012:Dodging]], [[v0.31:Drink]]).

Dwarven civilizations typically form (mostly) peaceful, trade-based relationships with [[human]]s and <s>hippies</s> [[elves]], but are bitter enemies with [[goblin]]s. == Fortress mode ==
Dwarves are the default race in fortress mode, as in, the only one that can be played without [[modding]]. As a [[trading]] race, Dwarves will send a [[caravan]] every year in [[Calendar|Autumn]]. These merchants will bring back tales of a fortress's [[wealth]] and goods, which will attract [[immigrant]]s, and the outpost liaison will bring news about the goings on of the world centered mainly on the player's civilization, including results of mayoral elections, flight of various refugee groups from thier forts and hilllocks during wars, and replacement of monarchs if the previous dies with or without an heir.

Dwarves may occasionally be struck by divine inspiration and desire to create a [[legendary artifact]], an item of masterful crafting and great value. A dwarf who is successful in this quest will likely become a [[skill|legendary]] worker in that profession; however, if the appropriate materials are not available, the dwarf will instead go [[insane]]. Dwarves with the dream of creating a great work of art long for a strange mood to strike them.

Dwarves react to stress violently and any sort of death with intense horror unless they've become sufficiently disciplined/numbed to such things. When pushed to unhappiness by unfortunate events, dwarves are more likely to [[tantrum]] than to talk things out. It is not uncommon to find them overturning furniture, injuring others, and generally being rowdy. Paradoxically, they also have a strong sense of [[justice]], and those who damage property or other dwarves may find themselves incarcerated, or -- in extreme cases -- on the receiving end of the [[Hammerer]]'s corporal punishment, though unintentionally fatal beatings from the fortress guard are not unusual.

== Adventure mode ==
Dwarven fortresses currently exist in Adventurer mode, although player-made fortresses that have been abandoned can attract dwarven NPCs that will settle down in them. Unfortunately, [[human]]-made armor is too large for them to wear, and humans are the only race with [[shop]]s, so all armor upgrades will have to come from looting elves, goblins, and other dwarves. Most human weapons must be wielded two-handed by dwarves, due to their size, except of course weapons dwarves can also make.

== Ethics ==
Morally speaking, dwarven [[ethics]] most closely resemble human and elven ethics, agree somewhat with [[kobold]] and animal-people ethics, and disagree strongly with goblin ethics. Unlike elves, dwarves find the devouring of dead enemies unthinkable, and will not butcher or consume intelligent beings (goblins see this as a personal matter). They are entirely opposed to torture of any sort for any reason, unlike elves, humans, kobolds and animal-people (who find certain forms of torture acceptable) and especially goblins, who find all torture acceptable. Dwarves tolerate animal trophies but shun those who keep trophies of sapient beings, and find those who keep trophies of other dwarves appalling. Dwarves find the killing of animals, enemies and plants completely acceptable, unlike elves, kobolds and animal-people. An exception to this is the killing of neutral beings, which is sanctioned as long as the killing had been officially ordered. A dwarf found to have participated in assault, theft, trespassing or vandalism will be seriously punished; some crimes such as killing other dwarves, breaking oaths, slavery and treason are punishable by death. On the other hand, lying is considered a personal matter.

== Mythology ==
In real-life mythology, dwarves are much like humans, but generally prefer to live underground and/or in mountainous areas. In their fortresses they have accumulated treasures of [[gold]], [[silver]], and [[gem|precious stones]], and pass their time fabricating costly weapons and armor. They are famed [[miner]]s and [[Metalsmith|smiths]], although, like humans, they can specialise in any number of trades. Generally shorter than humans, they are on average stockier and hairier, and usually sport full beards. Though slow runners and poor riders, dwarves are excellent warriors and defenders of their strongholds. Dwarves have the ability to forge magical items, which shows off their culture's and species natural craftsmanship. For instance, dwarven smiths created some of the greatest and most powerful items of mythology, which inspired the in-game [[strange mood]]s and [[Legendary artifact]]s.

== Community outlook ==
Dwarves have accumulated a reputation among players for being slow-witted, although to be fair, this is more a function of the game itself (and certain consequences thereof) than it is the fault of the dwarves. The instances of dwarven stupidity are numerous; examples include [[dodging]] into thin air (off of cliffs and into [[river]]s), never accounting for [[water]] [[flow]] (and being swept off of [[waterfall]]s to a watery grave several [[z-level]]s below), always taking the easy [[path]]s (even through a pond [[syndrome|poisoned]] with toxic [[forgotten beast]] blood), climbing across tree branches and falling into the lakes or ponds the branches hang over, building [[construction]]s from the wrong side (trapping themselves within), [[channel]]ing the floor one <s>is</s> was standing on, wandering off to do dangerous things ([[web|collecting webs]] when a [[giant cave spider]] is visibly lurking), and generally disregarding dangerous circumstances (carrying back friendly [[corpse]]s even when the goblins that have rendered them horizontal are a mere two feet away).

The problem is further compounded by dwarven touchiness; they easily become depressed, throwing [[tantrum]]s that spiral out of control for what seem like minor reasons (e.g. a temporary lack of [[wear|unworn]] [[clothing#The_great_sock_obsession|socks]]). This inevitably leads to players' emphasis of the "dwarfy": failsafe design, machinery in place of dwarfpower, fun with [[magma]], seizing control of the environment, killing all the cute fuzzy animals, strip mining the whole place hollow, etc. It is a great insult to be called an [[elf]], implying that the player is apt to sit around and gaze at trees, living in the world rather than bending it to their will.

In accounts of exploits or [[fun]], the generic name [[main:Urist|Urist]] is often used in place of any specific dwarf name, often because the default dwarf names are complex, random, and hard to remember. Several other nicknames for dwarves also exist; some are less polite than others.

Animal dissectors make [[extracts]] from certain caged [[vermin]], either [[fire snake]]s, [[cave spider]]s, or [[phantom spider]]s, at a [[butcher's shop]], stored in a suitable [[vial]]). The [[skill|skill level]] of the dissector determines the speed at which the labor is completed, and the [[quality]] and material of the [[container]] used adds to the value of the final product. The vermin themselves must be caught in [[cage trap]]s by [[trapper]]s, and do not survive the extraction process.

Animal dissection (along with the similar [[fish dissection]] skill) is only marginally useful in the current version of Dwarf Fortress. The vermin the skill targets are one of many such species that trappers may catch, making them difficult to source in any applicable volume as there is currently no way to specifically target trapping jobs. Dissecting a fire snake produces [[liquid fire]], a [[trade good]] which is produced in a stack of five and worth a not-insignificant 500☼ in total; the other vermin produce [[venom]], which unfortunately cannot be applied to [[weapon]]s and thus also serves as a (less valuable) [[trade good]].

Once [[alchemy]] is implemented (and trappers are made to target specific species and poisons are made to be reliable in [[weapon]] application), animal dissection will likely become a more useful skill for your dwarves to have.

The dwarven '''calendar''' is used to display the day, month, and year of any given date, and is visible in the upper right corner of the [[Status]] Screen ({{key|z}}). There are 12 months in the dwarven year divided into 4 seasons of 3 months each. Unlike the traditional Gregorian calendar, each dwarven month is exactly 4 weeks long, or 28 days, for a total of 336 days in a year. New Year's Day and the first day of Spring both fall on the 1st of Granite. New Year's Eve and the last day of Winter both fall on the 28th of Obsidian. The months are named after kinds of [[stone]]s, [[ore]], [[gem]]s and [[wood]].

The game's first playable year begins whenever the world stops generating. By default, the world will stop genning at year 250. Worldgen can be set to stop at several distinct years ranging from 5 to 1050 when selecting ''Create a World'', and can also be set to any arbitrary year by editing the advance option ''End Year'' in the ''Design New World with Advanced Parameters'' screen, or by interrupting world generation.

== Farming ==

The seasons correspond to growing seasons from the [[farm plot]] {{k|q}} menu, which dictate what can be grown when during the year. (See the list of [[crop]]s.) It should be noted that crops grow during seasons regardless of the actual weather, so any crops that grow during the spring will do so regardless of how much rain your area gets.

Civilizations will visit your fortress based on what season it currently is. Trade caravans for each race show up during the specific seasons each year, with the elves arriving during the Spring, the humans during the Summer, and the dwarves during the Autumn. No caravans arrive for the winter (with the exception of goblins, if your civilization is at peace with them), so it's smart to stock up on food and drink during the fall (or autumn to those of you more educated people).

In addition to the year, a world's history is also divided into ages. An age can be seen as an epoch, something which defines the period of years it describes. The age itself has no bearing on gameplay other than as categorization in [[Legends]] mode, though players may witness a change in age (with an accompanied announcement) should their actions cause the current age to end. As with all major releases, version 0.40.01 broke save compatibility with old versions.

==New stuff==
* World activation! There are a few things that aren't active, like megabeast invasions, but lots of world gen actions made it into the game. Birth, death (to the extent it wasn't handled before), marriages, site foundation as well as reclaims, basic succession and appointments/etc., invasions, as well as some more detail beyond world gen, like patrols, banditry and animal population handling. We still don't have army battles -- the invasions are all successful right now, unless they are locally interfered with by you.
* The game advances two weeks before each play -- the calendar there still moves slowly when there's a lot of action, as there is in larger worlds, but there are quite a few things I can do soon to speed that up. Due to the speed of the calendar, new forts in particular also get just two weeks. This'll probably cause some shenanigans with the caravan (or you'll just have to wait a year in an autumn fort for your first one) until we sort it out.
* Fortresses can be retired and unretired. Losing is still fun but if it doesn't happen when you want, you can put it off for a while. Retired forts can be conquered (much more easily than they would be if you still controlled them), so don't be surprised if you have to reclaim instead of being able to unretire sometimes. You can reclaim forts that didn't make it through world generation.
* Site maps for dwarves, elves and goblins. These are very basic, but they are there, anyway.
* Multi-tile trees and lots of new plants. Fruit and flowers. Leaves that fall in little clouds. I had to put off dwarf mode tree harvesting, but we should get to that before long.
* Megabeasts/forgotten beasts can attack, destroy and then reside within world gen sites like dwarf fortresses.
* Various movement changes. Climbing/jumping/sprinting in both modes, though invaders still require a line of site to use them. Adventure mode has a stealth rewrite, and some elements of that are present in dwarf mode (it is generally easier to spot thieves and ambushers, and I'll probably need to make them smarter about finding cover). Movement and combat are separate now. Startled people climb up the walls of their homes a little too often.
* Tracking information in adventure mode. You can pull up a little window and see tracks (capital K), and you can also have it describe the freshest track that isn't yours to more easily stay on a trail (alt K). Tracks are also part of the regular look command.
* Different levels of conflict -- your opponents in adventure mode will be listed with the current status (non-lethal, lethal, no quarter, etc.).
* Combat moves take place over a period of time now, and you can do things like catching an opponent's attack -- you have to do that by targeting a grab at the offending part now (reactions used to have a menu, but that was before combat got more smeared out). You can get information about what attacks your opponent is doing in the attack menu -- the quality of the information depends on your situational awareness skill. You can add adjective modifiers to your attacks (quick/heavy/etc.) and you can perform more than one attack at a time for a significant penalty to its force. It might make sense with two adamantine swords or something, twirling them about. Rumors of incidents can be spread, and the rumors need to be spread before you gain reputation (good or bad). Killing all of the witnesses to an event will effectively remove it from play if you don't let them get off the screen. People are a little psychic as it regards ongoing conflicts, so that they can make decisions non-stupidly. Your liaison can share rumors with your fort, but I still need to set up the screen for reviewing them after you've seen them the first time... not that you can do much with the information.
* You can travel through tunnels.
* You can get a guide to travel with you to a faraway place -- it still ended up being too cumbersome, so locals continue to be able to tell you the location of sites, but only within a certain distance of their home town.
* In general, conversations have been redone. They no longer have their own screen, but run along with other actions, and there are many more options.
* The mind has been rewritten quite a bit -- people now experience emotions according to different circumstances (lots of awkward monologues there), and they consider actions differently. The main outstanding issue is that I didn't get around to converting existing dwarf mode thoughts, so they sort of exist concurrently with the new emotions and that needs to be changed. I'll get to that before job priorities (which was one of the main shorter-term reasons for the rewrite). Some dwarves have life-long dreams and it is possible for them to recognize that they've accomplished the ones relating to skills and family. They cannot yet realize their dreams of taking over the world.
* The paragraph at the beginning of adventure mode was marginally more useful, but that slipped a bit at the end as things were tweaked. I think it'll still describe certain invasions and abductions, but it needs to be redone.
* Lots of new arena options -- not just the conflict state, but you can set the temperature etc. to all sorts of extremes.
* Some experiments with procedural items, though the new demon-type sites are still quite un-fun now. The knowledge on the slab at the bottom can be used, but it is probably not worth the trouble.
* The stuff I forgot
