Does the type of rock around the mountainous areas hint at magma? If you check out this article and this site list a bunch of common volcanic rocks: Granite, Rhyolite, Diorite, Andesite, Gabbro, Basalt, Peridotite and Komatite. Perhaps some clues as to where to find magma?
:It may be possible to find magma vents by searching for extrusive igneous rocks (such as basalt, felsite, rhyolite and andesite), but continental shelves and deep earth are just naturally made of intrusive igneous rock (such as granite, diorite and gabbro). There is another way to stop a flow of magma that's moving through a tunnel. You can go one z-level higher, dig to a spot above the magma-filled tunnel, then build a channel above where the magma is flowing and assign it as a Pond Zone. So long as you have buckets and a viable Water Source zone, a dwarf will come along and drop water on the magma, instantly turning it into obsidian and blocking the tunnel. --User:Stromko January 6th, 2007
I hadn't noticed it until just now, but both Lava and Magma occur in the game. I haven't seen this fact referenced in the wiki. Magma is a fluid which occurs in Magma Pipes, and in areas directly connected to Magma Pipes. Lava appears to occur in disconnected areas. I'm not sure what happens if you reconnect. If you use k to view a square, you'll see either Magma or Lava depths given. == Lava vs. Magma ==

I'm not clear on what difference there is between the two fluids. --Doctorlucky 02:58, 23 March 2008 (EDT)

By that time I had 3 Champion marksdwarves in Fortress Guard (not controllable at all :( ), ~20 wardogs, 4 other marksdwarves, 2 of which - Elite and 4 axedwarves/hammerdwarves at about 'competent' each. All the civilians (90 of them) were drafted into military with some extra weapons and no armor including ~10 miners from Legendary to novice with picks. The aftermath in the units screen is 16 dead Spirits of Fire including 7 from the initial attack, 10 live and happy Spirits of Fire with very long names, probably some more Spirits of Fire in ambush/invisible to me state and 5 recruits resting and dehydratated in remote corners of my bedroom area. :As far as I know, if there's any water in the pool then they will freeze into ice walls. == Evaporation ==

I notice that evaporation isn't covered here or in Magma, and I think it might be a useful topic. My observation is that depth 1 fluids can evaporate if left alone. This means that you can get rid of arbitrary amounts of fluid simply by spreading it out enough, or by using a multiple-floodgate lock system to meter measured quantities of fluid out over a chamber floor. In my experience, evaporated water leaves behind mud, whereas evaporated magma leaves behind nothing. --Doctorlucky 16:45, 19 March 2008 (EDT)
Should we add a section about the u-bend bug?

I've just managed to make a V-bend that can absorb infinite water as well as the U-bend that creates it. Basically I used ramps to create a dip in a pipe trying to make a u-bend, and when I poured a full murky pool into it I ended up with only the bottom three squares full of water. I then got a real u-bend going from another pond and as much as it poured into a pool the v-bend absorbed it all.

Help! A crazy dwarf is in my metal shop and I need to make giant axe blades to fend off the skeletal carps!

Periodically, individual dwarves in your fortress will be struck with an idea for a legendary artifact and enter a strange mood. Dwarves which enter a strange mood will stop whatever they are doing and pursue the construction of this artifact single-mindedly. They will not stop to eat, drink, sleep, or even run away from dangerous creatures. If they do not manage to begin construction of the artifact within three months or so, they will go insane and die soon afterward.

However, if a dwarf does manage to create an artifact, he or she will gain one legendary skill (with one exception: "possessed" dwarves will create an artifact but gain no skill from it).

Strange-mood behavior
When a dwarf is struck by a strange mood, the game will automatically center the map on the moody dwarf, pause, and alert you to his or her particular mood. While in a mood, a dwarf will display a blinking exclamation point (see status icons).

Workshops
After entering a mood, a dwarf will stop whatever he or she is doing, head to a workshop, and "claim" it, kicking out any other dwarf who may be using it. The workshop a dwarf takes over will usually depend upon the dwarf's highest "trade" skill: a Bone Carver, for instance, will generally take over a craftsdwarf's workshop; a Jeweler will take over a jeweler's workshop; a Mechanic will take over a mechanic's workshop; and a Metalsmith will take over a forge.

Most farming-, fishing-, trapping-, and combat-related skills (grower, thresher, brewer, fish cleaner, animal trainer, axedwarf, etc.) do not count as "trade" skills (although Tanners can enter strange moods, and will take over a tanner's shop).

Active soldiers can enter a strange mood if they have any trade skills from before they were conscripted. A soldier will be removed from his or her squad during the course of a mood and returned to it upon successful completion of an artifact. If a soldier has gained a legendary skill, you may wish to make use of it by removing that dwarf from the military.

If the right workshop is not available, a moody dwarf will stand idle instead (in their bedroom, outside the fort, in a sculpture garden or meeting hall, etc.) waiting for you to construct the right workshop. You can usually tell which workshop a moody dwarf wants by viewing their skills; their highest trade skill will dictate which workshop you should build for them.

Moody Glassmakers will require a glass furnace instead of a workshop, but Furnace Operators will require a forge. If your miners have reached the magma flow, any dwarf requiring a forge will insist on a magma forge, and will ignore any existing charcoal-powered forges.verify Glassmakers will use either a charcoal- or a magma-fuelled glass furnace.verify

Moody dwarves will occasionally seize a random workshop and proceed to create their artifact there. Following completion of the artifact, this workshop will often be converted into the type originally desired by the dwarf.verify

Skills
If a dwarf manages to successfully complete an artifact, the dwarf's highest trade skill will be elevated to "legendary". More specifically, 20,000 experience will be added to that skill. This will also give the dwarf several attribute boosts. ("Possessed" dwarves, however, gain no experience.)

This fact can be utilized to maximize the possibility of getting dwarf with a legendary skill you want: where possible, make sure each dwarf's highest trade skill is one of the kinds you want. Have all your peasants, growers, soldiers (you will have to temporarily deactivate them from the military), and other dwarves without trade skills do a tiny bit of work in the skill(s) you most want (Armorsmith is possibly the most-desired legendary skill); if a "dabbling" trade skill is the highest they have, that is the skill that will be used.

The type of artifact created will also depend on the dwarf's highest trade skill. Masons will always create some kind of stone object; Bone Carvers, a bone or shell object; Carpenters, a wood object, etc.

For the purposes of strange moods, mining and engraving are considered trade skills: moody miners and engravers will usually take over a craftsdwarf's or mason's workshop, turn out a stone craft or piece of furniture, and gain legendary skill as miners or engravers respectively (not as stone crafters or masons). Furnace operators will turn out a metal craft or piece of furniture and become legendary furnace operators. Weavers will take over a clothes maker's shop and produce an article of clothing.

Dwarves with no trade skills whatsoever (including children, sometimes) can go into strange moods. Such dwarves generally gain one of the crafting skills (wood crafter, bone carver, etc.).

Materials
In addition to requiring a specific workshop, dwarves will also demand specific raw materials in order to complete their artifact. Each artifact will require between one and ten items to complete.verify

After claiming a workshop, a moody dwarf will set about collecting these materials. If the supplies are not at hand, the dwarf will sit in the workshop until the items become available, or go insane if they do not become available before long.

Jewelers will usually only require one item: a rough gem, which they will fashion into a "perfect" gem. Metalsmiths will usually use ore (not metal bars).verify

Glassmakers will always require at least one piece of raw glass, usually clear. Since they will usually take over your glass furnace, you will either have to build another glass furnace or make sure you have the right types of raw glass ahead of time. The steps involved in glass production are fairly time-consuming: you must first collect sand, which requires an empty bag and an "Item Hauler" who is not busy hauling finished goods, then haul the sand to the furnace and melt it into glass. Clear glass is even more time consuming (the above steps plus: make potash out of wood, bake it into pearlash in a kiln, haul it to the furnace). It is therefore recommended you make several pieces of raw glass of each type as early as you can, reserved for use by moody dwarves. Furthermore, any dwarf may require raw glass, not just glassmakers. Why is this here? Make a seperate article about glassmaking. --Mizipzor 06:19, 6 November 2007 (EST)

The first object grabbed by the dwarf will be the "primary" substance; all other materials will be used to decorate the artifact. If a dwarf grabs onyx and makes a bed, for instance, it will be an "onyx bed". In addition to the primary substance, many other materials will often be used to construct an artifact. An artifact can potentially be composed of bone, cloth, gems, leather, metal, shell, stone, and wood all at once.verify

Demands
While a moody dwarf is in a workshop, you can get an idea of what materials he or she wants by pressing q and moving the cursor over the workshop. (If the dwarf is busy fetching objects instead of "waiting" for unavailable materials, you can still see this display by catching the dwarf in the workshop just as he or she is dropping off an object.)

The message will change every few seconds if the dwarf demands several different items. The dwarf will list all the materials he or she demands even if most of them have already been fetched. If a demand lasts longer than about 2 seconds, that means multiple items of that type will be required. Sometimes a dwarf will also mutter an unfamiliar word, such as "Kerging". This word is the name of the artifact he or she intends to create.

Moody dwarves collect their items in a fixed sequence, so if they have already collected at least one item (it will be lying in the workshop, viewable under the t menu), you can see what item in the sequence they will need next to continue.

Things dwarves demand include:

* Bones - "bones... yes", "pictures of skeletons"
* Dwarven bones/remains - "things... certain things". This demand is only seen during "Macabre" moods.

Sometimes the required item(s) will be very specific (for instance, rough emeralds); other times, very general (leather from any type of creature). Sometimes when dwarves are waiting for a specific material, it will be listed in the dwarf's thoughts and preferences. For instance, a dwarf that "likes platinum" will sometimes use one or more platinum nuggets in the construction of an artifact. This is not always the case, however, and they may want a completely unrelated item.verify

Once the dwarf has assembled all the materials he or she needs, the game will announce that the dwarf "has begun a mysterious construction!". The artifact should be completed within a day or two.

Dwarves which have created an artifact will hold on to it for a very long time (or the loss of the limb in which it is heldverify) after which one of three events can occur.
* The dwarf can become obsessed with the item and will keep hold of it until death.verify
* Become nervous and hide the artifact.verify
* Become uneasy and drop the artifact wherever he currently stands.verify

If it is a heavy object (such as a floodgate), it will slow them substantially unless they have several levels of strength. This is a bigger problem with a possessed dwarf, as the legendary status resulting from other moods will provide a good attribute boost.

Failure
If you can't provide all the required items within a couple of months, the dwarf will go insane and cancel the artifact. This insanity can take several forms:

* Become melancholy. The dwarf will either refuse to eat or drink until dead, or drown themselves at some point. They may also hurl themselves into the river, chasm, or magma immediately.verify
* Become a babbling wreck. A dwarf experiencing this will drop all the items he or she is wearing, one by one, and eventually starve to death.
* Go on a murderous rampage.

The first two outcomes are harmless (except to the moody dwarf, who will die), but you may want to station a squad nearby or assign a few war dogs to the dwarf on the chance that they will lash out. If you build your workshops inside enclosed rooms (with doors), you can also lock the moody dwarf in the room until he or she starves.

Anything that would cause the dwarf to cancel the strange mood job (like being attacked or having the workshop destroyed) will cause insanity. Note that the insanity can happen even when the dwarf is not deadlocked on an item; there have been observed instances where a dwarf goes insane while in the process of carrying a required item back to the commandeered workshop.

Types of strange moods
The first message in the following sections is how the mood is announced; the second message appears in the dwarf's profile when he or she is [v]iewed. All dwarves in a strange mood will have "Strange Mood" listed as their active task.

Fey
* Taken by a fey mood!
* Has the aspect of one fey!

This is the basic strange mood. Fey dwarves will clearly state their demands when the workshop they are in is examined.

Secretive
* Withdraws from society...
* Peculiarly secretive...

Secretive moods are the same as fey moods, except instead of loudly proclaiming his demands, a secretive dwarf will sketch his or her ideas.

Possessed
* Has been possessed!
* Possessed by unknown forces!

Possessed dwarves behave the same as fey dwarves, but will not gain any skill once the artifact is complete. Their thoughts are also cryptic, but are harder to understand than dwarves who withdraw from society.

Fell
* Looses a roaring laughter, fell and terrible!
* Has a horrible fell look!

A dwarf that goes into a fell mood will take over a butcher's shop or a tanner's shop instead of one of the craft shops. The dwarf will then murder the nearest dwarf, drag the corpse into the shop and make some sort of object out of dwarf leather or bone. Once the artifact is completed, the fell dwarf will become a legendary Bone Carver or Leatherworker. Strangely, none of the other dwarves seem to mind the murder.

Aside from the potential loss of an important dwarf in the wrong place at the wrong time, there doesn't seem to be any downside to a fell mood. The end result is always an artifact and a legendary craftsdwarf. Since the only ingredient used (a dwarf) is available in abundance, a fell mood will only "fail" if a hermit has a horrible fell look or if the proper workshop does not exist.

Macabre
* Begins to stalk and brood...
* Brooding darkly...

Like a fell mood, above, but the dwarf will not murder a fellow dwarf. A macabre dwarf may require dwarf bones, skulls, and chunks/remains; if you do not happen to have any, you will have to "make" some, or let the moody dwarf go insane.

Fell and Macabre moods will only happen to dwarves which are unhappy at the time of entering a mood.

Multiple Moods
Toady stated on this thread in the forum that two moods at once is a bug. Therefore, it is safe to assume that it is usually impossible to get more than one mood at once. Also, on the buglists: 000317 □ [dwarf mode][moods] two mood dwarves at once

Unresolved questions
* Does a larger number of dwarves in a fortress increase the chance of strange moods?
** A fortress with a very small number of dwarves (1-3) can go many years without seeing any strange moods, so it would seem so.
* Can the same dwarf go into a strange mood more than once?
** Presumably, they cannot.
* Can an already legendary dwarf go into a strange mood?
** A Legendary dwarf that hasn't acquired legendary status via creating an artifact can go into a strange mood.
* How many strange moods can occur in a single fortress?
** Apparently, an unlimited number. Previously, the moods were thought to cease after the 15th successful artifact, but this has been disproven.

Does the new version still have the strange mood? It wouldnt be complete without it!

:It still exists, I've had it happen several times now, I went to the archive wiki and copy/pasted the old page.

::Isnt that why the wiki was nuked? To make sure that no old info lingers? Ill put some "verify" in there, I dont think that the bold text is enough for users to understand that some of this may no longer apply. --Mizipzor 06:03, 6 November 2007 (EST)

:::I agree. Although moods themselves don't seem to have been changed in this version, the changes to the stones/ores that they use means that some of the information in this article is no longer true. I'll have a go at cleaning it up when I have the proper time for it, but this wiki definitely needs a 'no copypasting from the archives' rule to avoid screwups like this. If people are going to copypaste old stuff, then it is downright irresponsible of them not to verify the accuracy of the information before committing it to the wiki. --Morlark

I know, I was a huge fan of that little strange aspect of the old one.

I need my dwarfs to make more swordfish bone swords, and i still need some glass weapons/armor

The moods seem to have changed. One of my dwarfs went fey, made a nice hematite mug, and is now a legendary... Engraver. Very wierd, he also had no stoneworking or other craftdwarf skills. But he was a competent mason. This was also my fifth dwarf who took the same craftworkshop, so it's a bit strange. --Soyweiser 17:36, 6 November 2007 (EST)

Hey, I am getting a dwarf who wants "raw...crystal". Help? -- Bovinepro
:Probably wants raw crystal glass. I had a dwarf ask for "raw...green", they wanted raw green glass. Looks like Toady might have moved the glass demands out of the "rough...color" category. Iddq?
::I had a dwarf that wanted some stones, metal bars ,leather and "raw...green", 'rough...color", and "rough[or was it raw?]...crystal" at the same time - he hauled everything(stones, bars, leather, green glass, a generic uncut gem) to his workshop exсept for the last thing. Too bad I'm not even sure that rock crystals exist in this version not to mention my specific location.--Another 05:17, 12 November 2007 (EST)
:::Just verifying, rock crystal exists! Found a tiny pocket of them in some diorite.--Trukkle 14:47, 16 November 2007 (EST)

About the engravers taking over craftdwarf's shops and becoming legendary engravers afterwards is quite true. I recently got a bunch of immigrants, and the engraver that came with them fell into a strange mood before even crossing the bridge on my river. He took over a craftdwarf's workshop and made a basalt scepter, and now he's legendary level in engraving. So yeah, perfect laboratory conditions, he was 100% engraver when he went into his mood and came out a legendary engraver. --Zhang5 17:07, 12 November 2007 (EST)

It seems that no craft skill is required. I just had a peasant go into a strange mood. His skills were: competent marksdwarf; novice wrestler; novice armor wearer. He grabbed a craftsdwarf's workshop and 10 items (3xFelsite, Schorls, Tigereyes, Red Beryls, Giant cave swallow leather, Grizzly Bear Leather, Rough harlequin opals and Ash logs -- guess he has expensive taste?) and churned out an idol in relatively short order. This is my 9th successful mood in this fortress, and I've seen requests for between 3 and 10 items, personally. Since they seem to be increasing in complexity, I've either hit the item cap, or I'm about to break ten :) Doctorlucky 16:34, 19 November 2007 (EST)
:This is consistent with older versions. Moody peasants would become crafters, and 10 items was the cap. The minimum was 1 item -- generally when constructing a "perfect gem".--Maximus 16:55, 19 November 2007 (EST)

Maximum number of artifacts
Well, I just got my umpteenth mood, and it resulted in the 16th successfully created artifact.(33b) So that 15 cap thing is clearly wrong. As it happens, this single artifact is worth 754,800, and is an adamantine spear decorated with, among other things, adamantine. For the record, in case this data is important to someone tabulating number of ingredients, my moods in order created the following objects using the corresponding number of ingredients: (Flute, 4; Mechanism, 4; Spear, 3; Millstone, 6; Ring, 8; Chest, 7; Cape, 7; Ring, 9; Statue, 8; Idol, 10; earring, 8; Buckler, 8; Table, 3; Mechanism, 10; Bracelet, 5; and Spear, 8).
Glass is an interesting material with widespread uses. Glass is manufactured in a Glass furnace or Magma glass furnace. There are three types of glass: Green, Clear and Crystal.

Green glass is manufactured from sand. Clear glass uses both sand and pearlash, while crystal glass is manufactured from Rock crystals and pearlash.

Sand can be gathered in bags using a task available at a glass furnace. You must designate a sand-gathering zone in order for this task to succeed.

Products
Glass can be manufactured into a wide variety of products:

*Raw glass is essentially a low-value gem, a frequent request of dwarves undergoing a strange mood. Given its abundance, raw green glass makes an excellent training material for practicing the gem cutting skill.
*Glass can be formed into blocks which can then be used for most building purposes. Although this is much more labor-intensive than simple using raw or block stone, some people feel that it has an aesthetic appeal; for example, see Leerok the Lacerta's Glass tower
*Glass can be used to manufacture a number of furniture items, including armor stands, boxes, floodgates, hatch covers, grates, portals, statues, tables, thrones and weapon racks.
*In addition, Glass can be converted into Trap components, such as large, spiked balls or giant axes. Unlike their metal counterparts, glass trap mechanisms each utilize only single units of their component materials. For example, a giant green glass axe blade requires only a bag of sand in order to manufacture. Since sand, if present on the map, if effectively an infinite resource, this is a very cheap way to fully outfit a fortress with weapon traps.
*Glass windows can be made at a glass furnace as an alternative to making windows from gems.
*Outside of Metal and Wood, Glass is the only readily available material for Cage construction. A glass cage is called a terrarium, and is unique among cages in that it may be converted into an aquarium using the an option in the building tasks/prefs menuqw. Terraria may not be used for justice applications.
*Glass vials are used in some types of plant processing, and are required to build an Alchemist's laboratory
*Glass can be formed into a variety of crafts.

Glass items often have unique names:
*A glass chest is called a box.
*A glass door is called a portal.
*A glass pipe is called a tube.
*A glass cage is called a terrarium.

Properties
Green glass has a material value of 2.
Clear glass has a material value of 5.
Crystal glass has a material value of 10.

The damage value of green glass is suspected to be 50%. verify
Does the presence or absense of a road affect where the human caravan appears? :In v33a, no caravans need roads. However, I think the human caravan needs a smoothed, 3-wide path to a map edge - but I'm not certain about this.
:On a relatively flat and moderately forested map I recently played, each civ seemed to have a preferred side of the map to enter, but were relatively random about where on the edge they appeared. I built a straight, smoothed road to each edge that went largely unused. The human wagons are happy to go up and down slopes and cross quite rough (but unobstructed) ground to reach me. A smooth road would almost certainly speed their arrival and departure. As an aside, the goblin civ in my current map has been quite happy to start sieges from several different sides, so take the directionality with a grain of salt. I've had a crash bug associated with the arrival of the human caravan. This repeated the next year. I'm guessing this relates to Toady's comments about a seed pricing bug. It's possible that it's a pathing issue with the wagons, of course. All crafted items (furniture, armor, bolts, etc.) &ndash; but not intermediate materials (bars, blocks, etc. except cloth, which does have quality levels) &ndash; are bracketed by characters that show the quality of their craftsdwarfship. Dyeing also has a quality level, as does Decorating/Encrusting (with gems, leathers, cloth, etc). Prepared foods have quality levels. Alcohol has a hidden quality that controls the amount of happiness a dwarf gets from drinking it. It is not known whether or not masterful alcohol can cause tantrums.
When a masterful quality item is created, the game will announce, "<dwarf> has created a masterpiece!" Such a masterpiece will cause the dwarf that created it to tantrum for a year if it is ever lost or destroyed. Masterpiece meals can be eaten safely, although allowing the food to rot will cause a tantrum. Using up masterpiece bolts will not cause a tantrum either; nor does trading them away to merchants. Since legendary dwarves are most likely to be the ones creating masterpieces, keeping these creations safe should be high priority; tantruming legendary dwarves can be very difficult to subdue.

Artifact items have a unique name instead of bracketing symbols and are worth 120x base value. They have a higher combat modifier than Masterful items, although the specific modifier is unknown.

Currently, magma-safe materials are known to include iron, steel, bauxite, and adamantine, but currently it is difficult to control magma flow with floodgates since mechanisms must be made out of rocks, most of which are non-magma-safe materials (Bauxite being a notable exception).

Mechanisms made from raw adamantine are magma-safe, and will properly operate a magma-safe floodgate in a magma channel. The mechanism on the trigger need not be magma-safe, only the one on the floodgate. While raw adamantine is both rare and valuable, it appears to currently be less rare than bauxite. In order to construct mechanisms from raw adamantine, you must first allow its use for non-economic purposes in the stock screen (z and select 'stone'). You might wish to remove other stone-using jobs while adamantine is available for use.

Calculations
According to the raw data files, magma's temperature is somewhere between 1300°C and 1400°C, which translates to 2300°F&ndash;2500°F .

Materials that resist magma are:

Metal:
* Nickel &mdash; 2600°F (1427°C) verify
* Nickel silver &mdash; 2600°F (1427°C) verify
* Iron &mdash; 2680°F (1471°C)
* Steel &mdash; 2710°F (1488°C)
* Platinum &mdash; 3000°F (1649°C)
* Adamantine &mdash; 15000°F (8315°C)

Stone:
* Bauxite &mdash; 3600°F (1982°C)
::::::: Actually, the easiest way was for me to edit the raw and put bauxite in every layer in the game. Fired up the game, created a new world, found a magma vent and bam I was in business. The verdict? It's magma-safe. Both Bauxite floodgates and bauxite mechanisms resist the magma, and the bauxite rocks that I left on the floor were unharmed by the magma flow. Bauxite: confirmed. With the iron and steel confirmation, I would believe that anything given the melting point stat above magma's temperature is magma safe. Now, if we can just get Toady to make magma replenish, we could make some amazing magma traps with machines made of iron/steel and bauxite! --TheUbie 15:01, 21 November 2007 (EST)
Iron is definitly magma safe. I've repeatedly flooded goblins with magma, and only their iron equipment remained. Raw adamantine is magma-safe. I know we all knew that, but I've tested it. In particular, I built mechanisms out of raw adamantine and tested them on a raw adamantine floodgate. All the loose stone has since melted, but the gate continues to open and close just fine. And while raw adamantine is rare and valuable, at least it's less rare than bauxite.... :My numbers were 68 dwarves (I went from 36 to 60+ in the last wave), roughly 2.7M in wealth (and I'd been over 1M for years) in year 1056 with a moderate number of pets and no coins. I'd also dug to the deepest level the first year, in case folks were considering that as a criterion. I have fought numerous slugmen, goblins and kobolds, but nothing exotic (I had to reload after the dragon arrived and burned everything down). Bear in mind that if there's a pop requirement, then it's important how many you have before the DM arrives, but it's equally important how many you had before the previous wave. Those numbers form the bounds. So if you had 80 before the DM arrived, but 31 of them arrived or were born in that last wave, then this will have been the first time the caravan saw you with 50+ pop. About the engravers taking over craftdwarf's shops and becoming legendary engravers afterwards is quite true. In the above thread, Toady mentions the pits (and therefore adamantium) are located on every map tile which is displayed as a mountain. He then notes that it might only place them on mountain squares in the local map as well, but that he wasn't sure. So, that detail needs verification. I mentioned the apparent relationship between discovering adamantine and the King arriving. I removed the "ver" tag and replaced it with normal text, since it was forcing the page into the "outdated info" category, and I think we're now accurate to 33b. The only thing we still need to check is whether magma version of shops are still needed to handle the processing. (A magma clothier's shop... hmmm).
A screw pump can lift water from below onto the same Z-level as the pump. Its is two tiles by one tile in size, and it can be either manually operated by a dwarf with the pump operator job or by using gear assemblies connected to water wheels and/or windmills. The direction you want the water to travel must be chosen at the time of construction.

Construction
Building a screw pump requires an enormous corkscrew, a stone, wood, or glass block, and a pipe section. The light green X must be next to the water source and the dark green X is where the water exits the pump. Having specified the direction of travel, you must ensure that the source side of the pump is placed adjacent to and above (in the z-axis) a liquid. The screw pump will draw the liquid up from below, and distribute it out of the other side of the pump. Screw pumps are constructions that can be removed to recover the building materials.

#Side view of the basic pump unit. Water is moved from the lower floor to the upper; notice how the front of the pump does not need a floor.
#Side view of stacked screw pumps. Power is transmitted vertically through the missing floor tiles under the fronts of the pumps - no need for gearboxes in this design. The screw pump front prevents the water from flowing diagonally downwards.
#Top view of the basic pump unit.
#Top view with walls in place to prevent the receiving area from spilling out. If this is all it needed, these units could be stacked on top of each other, but it's missing one thing - dwarf access. There's no stairs/ramps, and no good place to put them either that wouldn't interfere with the adjacent levels' water containment.
#Solution for a freestanding tower - fire escape! Sure, you could consolidate the up and downstairs into a single up/down stair tile, but I like the zigzag and symmetrical arrangement this one presents. Just build these on top of each other, flipping horizontally each time, and bam. Minimal yet aesthetic multi-level water pumping.
<div float="right">Example courtesy of Reynard of the forums</div>

Notes
* The source of the pump must be directionally adjacent to "Open Space" that is directly above a filled pool of liquid.
* When stacking pumps as in the tower example, above, you must construct the lowest pump first, and then move upward in order. If you begin with a higher pump, the missing floor tile will prevent you from designating the construction. Pumps require support of some kind in both squares.
* The pump tiles are passable by dwarves, but the front of the pump must be accessible to be operated manually.
* Active mechanisms connected to the pump will automatically start the pump; to prevent this either restrict water flow using floodgates, or put in a gear assembly linked to a lever to disconnect motion.
* Pumps can also be used in conjunction with a water wheel or a windmill to become self-powered.
* Pumps can not push water up additional Z-levels. That is, if you direct the output of a screw pump into a 1-square space surrounded by walls, the water will not "overflow" the walls.
* Pumps appear to work by destroying water infront of them, and creating it behind them (unless there is already 7 units behind them), since they won't stop creating water until they have 7 units behind you can eaisly fill the world with water to the level of the pump if you have a loop between the input and the output, and also connect the output to the world.

Running a pump with a windmill
Building Windmills
Nothing to it - build it anywhere aboveground (note that the windmill won't do anything yet)

Building Pumps
The end you selected to 'pump from' will suck water up from the level below, then pump it out of the other end. Build with this in mind. If you want to pump from a river, the 'pump from' end should be on the river.

Both the pipe and corkscrew can be built by a carpenter, (the corkscrew is listed as something like 'enormous wooden cor' if you are using the single-width screen, but hitting Tab to expand the screen should reveal the full text).

Connecting windmills to pumps:

Note that it's much easier if the centre of the windmill lines up with the pump.

# Dig one level below the windmill and put a gear assembly directly beneath the axle (at centre of windmill). The windmill will start turning.
# You're probably going to want to bring your power up to the surface. To do this, dig away from the first gear until the surface is clear above. Place another gear here.
# Connect the gears together using a horizontal axle.
# Get a miner to channel on top of the second gear.
# Build a third gear in this channel. You should now have a turning gear on the surface.
# If you thought ahead, you should only need one axle to connect the surface gear to the pump. A pump can be powered from any side.

I recommend that you connect a lever to one of your gears beforehand. The pump will start pumping as soon as it has power.

You can change stuff around as the situation dictates, but that should get you started.

<small>The pictures aren't lined up - the far right gear in the second picture is the one below the surface gear.</small>

Alternate Uses
Pumps can also be built with no actual pumping in mind but as dwarven exercise machines. This is an excellent method to train haulers for better strength and agility or for future soldiers.
====Bugged Human Caravans====
I've had a crash bug associated with the arrival of the human caravan. This repeated the next year. I'm guessing this relates to Toady's comments about a seed pricing bug. It's possible that it's a pathing issue with the wagons, of course. I had a Philosopher show up last night. I'm unsure of the requirement to get him; the only really notable thing that had happened was I got over 100 dwarves. I had the king show up tonight. "The King arrives, dressed as a peasant." I have no idea what the requirements were. I missed the 1051 and 1052 dwarf caravans due to prolonged sieges, and had no immigrants those years. 1053 I had the caravan; a season later a wave of immigration brought my total dwarves up to 37. In the spring the king arrived, along with enough others to bring the population to 63. At that time I was notified that the Captain of the Guard position was available. Only thing I can think is that I hit adamantine during the siege years, and mistakenly built a number of ridiculously valuable adamantine objects. (Door, Coffin, etc.) This has raised my fortress value to 1.3 million. Is 1 million value perhaps the trigger? I have no coins, and no nobles other than the starting 4 positions. I did not appoint a sheriff. Doctorlucky 04:15, 15 November 2007 (EST)
What determines expedition leader?
There are a number of situations to test out:
* No social skills on any dwarves
** Probably random, possibly based on the Dwarf's thoughts and preferences
* Majority of social skills on one dwarf (various positions in start order)
** Test case 1: only one dwarf has social skills - gives that dwarf as leader and all positions
* Social skills spread between multiple dwarves
** Is there any weight on which skill determines the leader?
The text of the article seems to suggest that engravings and smoothing can be done on constructed walls. In my experience, a constructed wall is described as a "Granite Block Wall" and does not accept either smoothing or engraving commands. It also highlights with a flashing green "C" in designation mode, indicating it is constructed. If I'm wrong, I'd love to know how to accomplish this!
Also, the article text indicates that a wall must be built above certain types of solid object. In my experience, this is not true; you can build a wall over empty space provided you build beside an existing solid structure. This is key when building spiral ramps within towers, etc.
:All right, some experimentation has determined how walls are named and how the operate. I'll use "felsite" as my material in the examples: A wall which is comprised of naturally-occurring rock or other material is called a "Rough-hewn Felsite Wall". Smoothed, it becomes a "Smoothed Felsite Wall". A wall constructed of mined stone using the building menu is described as a "Rough Felsite Block Wall" while one made out of stone block (prepared by a mason) is a "Felsite Block Wall". Neither type of constructed wall is engravable or smoothable, and both type look identical to a smoothed natural wall. == Gaining experience ==

Dwarves gain experience by performing tasks. Experience is gained when the task is completed; if a task takes a long time and is frequently interrupted (by the dwarf going off to drink, for instance), the dwarf will gain the skill very slowly. Tasks without an associated skill (such as hauling) do not give any experience. Constructing or destroying buildings also does not give experience (except when architecture is used).
Increasing skills
To reach Novice level in any skill requires 500 XP. Reaching each successive level requires an additional 100 XP, so to go from Novice to No label requires 600 XP; No label to Competent requires 700 XP, and so on. The following figures are the cumulative XP needed to go from unskilled to any given skill level.

For item-crafting purposes, there are actually 21 skill levels, from 0 (dabbling) to 21 (Legendary+5). The skill levels Legendary through Legendary+5 are all shown as Legendary, but are actually separate levels. You can't find out exactly when a dwarf gets to Legendary+5, but it will happen 1000xp before their eighth attribute if they have no other skills, so when they get eight attributes, they are at Legendary+5. Masterpieces happen 15% of the time when Legendary, but 27% of the time when Legendary+5, based off of a random d20 roll. Skill beyond Legendary+5 does not increase the probability of creating a masterpiece item.
Increasing attributes
Attribute increases are based on total experience gained across all skills, and are not connected to the attainment of specific skill levels.

Dwarves with a single skill will get their first attribute between Competent and Skilled, their second when reaching Talented, a third between Expert and Professional, a fourth when reaching Great, and a fifth between High Master and Grand Master. Further increases can happen after Legendary.

Is there a way to build walls on areas (like when designating a stockpile) instead of tile per tile? Very boring work when constructing long walls... --Mizipzor 13:40, 4 November 2007 (EST)
I'm very new to wiki editing, so I'm not going to touch the article itself at this point. If someone would like to verify...?--Doctorlucky 04:10, 12 November 2007 (EST)
