:''You may be looking for general information on [[tilesets]] or the [[Graphics set repository]].''

A '''character set''', or simply '''tileset''', is an image in BMP or PNG format that contains the 256 different tiles, corresponding to the [[Main:Character table|IBM Code Page 437]] (sometimes called Extended ASCII). They are used to display the main graphics.

=Installation=
To use a specific tileset with Dwarf Fortress you must perform the following steps:

# Download the tileset to your computer. Each tileset is just an image, so there is no separate download link. ('''Right-Click''' on the tileset image and '''Save-As'''.)
# If necessary, convert the tileset to the correct image format for the version of DF you are using:
## For ''DF 0.28.181.40d'' or older: Open the file in an image editor and save it as a '''24-bit bitmap''' (BMP) if it isn't already in that format.
## For ''DF 0.31'' or newer: Open the file in an image editor and save it as a '''PNG''' with ''transparency'' if it isn't already in that format.
# Move/Copy the file to the DF art directory (''<DF Dir>/data/art'').
# Edit the initialization configuration file (''<DF Dir>/data/init/init.txt'') to specify the tileset file to use. There are four locations that can be changed:
## Specify the tileset for a windowed display by setting the filename in the '''[FONT:''<filename>'']''' tag.
## Specify the tileset for a full-screen display by setting the filename in the '''[FULLFONT:''<filename>'']''' tag.
## Specify the tileset for a windowed graphical display by setting the filename in the '''[GRAPHICS_FONT:''<filename>'']''' tag.
## Specify the tileset for a full-screen graphical display by setting the filename in the '''[GRAPHICS_FULLFONT:''<filename>'']''' tag.
## Once you have made the changes you need to remember to save the file.

If the selected tileset requires modifications to the Raws, you will have to make those edits. What those changes are will depend on the tileset itself.

Once the file is saved and the required changes are made, you are ready to play DF with your new tileset!
Changed most text characters as well as some others to 4x4 with blackspace to avoid tiling. Most characters have been revised to be spaced out to be more distinguishable in such a small set. After seeing the dev update earlier today about increasing your view size I decided to create this small font. This has been built completely from scratch, mostly while at work today. I may be making a shaded version in the future. The first image to the right is from the Abeyverse succession game.
Updated 11/12/07 to de-fuzz uppercase letters, added serifs and clarified lowercase letters, made horizontal spacing consistent throughout character set, fixed one error in the double horizontal-left-right, single-vertical-up-down character, made exclamation points consistent, thinned out question mark and inverse question mark, sharpened sideways stemless arrows, clarified international characters, and clarified some greek letters. Since v2.0: fixed 'i' 'g', fixed Yen symbol, fixed smiley 0x01 to not have an extra line to its right, lowered the period and colon characters, fixed position of 'x'. |comments=The "full size" version of Potash. I insist on using a square font to maintain sanity when judging sizes and distances, but I'm not a fan of how text usually looks with square glyphs -- the letters are either too wide, or spaced too far apart. I've tried balance those two flaws against each other as much as possible, and I think this font is very readable as a result. Nearly all the 10&times;10 glyphs have empty borders on all four sides, to prevent confusing (or just ugly) connections between adjacent tiles.
This ensures that the positioning of each image within each tile stays exactly the same as in the original tileset, but with a single pixel column added on both sides of the tile to bring it up to size. |comments=I liked the great Talryth square 15x15 very much! However dwarves tiles were a litlle bit out of the style, so I changed them to default-like ones. Also added background so the there is no more black background which with bright ASCII was hard to my eyes. Again thanks to Talryth for his amazing job!
Some tiles are original, some are variants and most are copied from various sets the author found pleasing. Notable originals include the broken bolt/ashes tiles, the ballista heads/large hills, the small hills, the ore (gear animation is pleasing, though axle animation is unimproved), ground tiles, and vermin. Also, bins look decent and up/down stairs look okay. This set looks its best with Sphr's graphics.
|comments= I always liked the simplicity and feeling of ASCII tilesets but at the same time i really missed solid backgrounds and some interesting tiles from graphical tilesets. So my first try was to apply a solid background to all tiles of Talryth square tileset ( except few ones ), but it came out looking like a bunch of vermins swimming in a goblin's vomit... anyway i tried further and began to experiment with different base tilesets and finally made my own, using elements from tilesets of other authors ( mainly Tocky's one, big thanks to him! ). Then i have spotted Alexander's Jolly Bastion and took some ideas from him ( big thanks to Alexander too! ) like sky tiles and color. Then i applied Lee's Natural Color Scheme with modified "BLACK" value and here it is! Grim Fortress. It is pretty dark, kinda foggy and i think the name "Grim Fortress" fits well.
|comments=Impressed with the genius of using sprites as tiles, I cobbled together this tileset of my own. It uses Super Foul Egg's superb font as a base, with several sprites also found in other users' sets. Because a lot of letters are used for graphics, I suggest that you [[User:Jackard|remove accented letters from names]] with this set. I also suggest you shift some items to other icons, such as the coniferous trees (change Pine, Cedar, Larch from 024 to 147), the turtle (change 15 to 151), and Quarry Bush leaves (change from 006 to 003).
V2 now with new graphics for walls and liquids, as well as some other tweaks here and there and a first attempt at using dual-color sprites using a cyan base instead of simple greyscale. (Right now implemented for beds, wood and statues.)
V1 can still be found [[:Image:16x16_isenhertz_v1.png|here]].
|comments=This is a modified version of Mike Mayday's/Herrbdog's tileset. It has a more textured feel to the walls and makes heavy use of the new transparency features to make some of the tiles a little more dynamic. You can view a preview map [http://mkv25.net/dfma/map-7000-dragonskull here]. I recommend changing the sky settings in the init.txt file to [SKY:249:1:0:0] for a more natural look.
Update June 11, 2010: Updated to work with the 31.xx versions of Mike Mayday's set. It will probably not look right using it with vanilla Dwarf Fortress.
|comments=This is a 16x16 tileset based on Redjack and Flying Mage sets (and possible tiles taken from others that I've since lost track of - apologies). Some tiles are original or have been tweaked, mainly to provide a much more subtle background than most. A completely new character set is used to improve legibility, tweaked and anti-aliased for dark backgrounds.
Updated new glyphs to be more consistent with the Fixedsys style. - v2.1 - update a few more glyphs, namely the integral, the infinity symbol, and the spade, and a few others I'm forgetting. - v2.2 - update the club and spade, and the music notes - v2.3 - fix the fact that 0xF9 and 0xFA were inadvertently swapped.
The required resolution is strange, so run fullscreen with BLACK_SPACE:YES and resolution at 640x480. This font is actually different from the 8x14 version in that 20 characters have been replaced with the original MDA wide versions. These 'extra' wide characters are sandwiched in between the end of the 8x14 and beginning of the 8&times;8 font in the EGA BIOS ROM. The changed characters, in ASCII order, are: arrow-left-and-right, '"', '+', '-', 'M', 'T', 'V', 'W', 'X', 'Y', 'Z', 'm', 'v', 'w', 'ae', cent sign, yen, peseta, plus-minus, and division sign. Other than these characters, all characters are the same, with rightmost-row duplicated on the C and D rows like the MDA (though I don't actually know if this is technically correct).
|comments=Designed for fullscreen. Inspired by Herrbdog's tileset, I created a shaded tileset targeting the default fullscreen 800x600 resolution. Basicaly, you have the exact same "curses" default tileset but with some shading done to the lower right of each letters and items. I've left alone everything which was related to mining or was meant to be plain, for example the smoothered tiles and the plain tiles in the demo. The reason behind that is that I didn't find much logic to have those graphics shaded as they could possibly connect on any direction on the screen, which would make the shading a little strange. Please note that this tileset is only a "beta". I might work on it again if there is enough people who like it and would like improvements. == Change name to "Fortress Mode Quick start"? ==
I feel like this page should be moved to [[Fortress mode quick start]], not only to be consistent with the name [[Adventure mode quick start]], but also to make it so that the name is more descriptive. "Quickstart guide" could mean anything, really. (For me at least, the current title feels like the name for some hypothetical "how to get DF running" guide, moreso than a fortress mode guide.) As a bonus, the new name doesn't imply that fortress mode is somehow the "default" or "main" mode of play <code>:)</code> . —[[User:Lue|Lue]] ([]) 02:42, 21 July 2014 (UTC)
:The game is called 'Dwarf Fortress' and the game mode at issue is called 'Dwarf Fortress' so I think it's reasonable to imply that this is the default mode of play. I don't actually care what the article's title is, but I don't really think anyone is confused by the status quo and if they are I don't think they can handle anything more challenging than legends mode. So I guess this is a vote against.[[User:Qalnor|Qalnor]] ([])
== Articles not Transferring over between versions ==
I was just browsing through this guide when I noticed that the "starting site" and "preparing carefully" articles are red links. Those pages existed for the last version of this article, but apparently they haven't been transferred over to DF2014 (that's the current version?). Maybe im being dumb and blind but i can't find wheelbarrow in Carpenter Workshop.

This is the paragraph where it is explained, but im going through the list and can't find "wheelbarrow".
"Also, it would be helpful to build a few wheelbarrows to make hauling large objects easier. Queue up 2 or 3 at the carpenter's workshop (they're located near the bottom of the list, but remember that scrolling up with - warps to the bottom of the list). While the wheelbarrows are being built, select your stone stockpile with q and use w to increase "Max Wheelbarrow" to 3 (the maximum). Your dwarves will automatically move wheelbarrows to the stockpile once they are built."
== Strictness of instructions ==
There are a lot of instructions like "dig a 3x20 hallway", "make a 3x3 stairway", "two tiles past that, dig a 11x11 room". I believe it's detrimental to the creativity of beginners and ultimately the variety of fortresses to give such exact instructions. Instead, something like "make a stairway", "dig a large room", etc should be preferred. In addition, a paragraph talking about reasonable dimensions ("most fortresses will do with a 2x2 staircase", "a 3 tile wide hallway is enough for the main hallways of 200+ fortresses") should give beginners a sufficient scale to base their decisions on.

The question is whether it's better to give new players actual numbers to follow or instead give them rough dimensions and tell them to experiment.
I fear that the former will rear players that build nothing but cookie cutter fortresses following exact dimensions of this guide; while the latter might simply be inferior as a guide.
In the end, I decided to omit the prepared meals, as a couple of barrels full of lavish meals created by a legendary cook can easily buy the entire caravan 3 times over. I also mentioned the usual suspects for missing mood items as must-have supply, without explicitly mentioning moods as they're a bit spoiler-y and not mentioned anywhere else in the guide. Is this a proper way to interact with the map? [[Special:Contributions/184.145.18.50|184.145.18.50]] 20:54, 27 February 2016 (UTC)
There should be an example screenshot of the search window for new players to understand how the interface works better. --[[User:Enzanki ars|Enzanki ars]] ([]) 22:52, 30 May 2016 (UTC)

These instructions explain how to create a '''screenshot''' to save or post on a wiki, forum, or elsewhere.

__TOC__

== Capturing the image ==
# Make the screen look how you want it - centered, open programs, etc. A screenshot will be wysiwyg, exactly what's shown on your monitor or in the active window (unless you [[Screenshot#Edit_the_image|edit the image]], which is not hard).
The next step depends on your operating system.

=== Windows ===
# Make sure your Dwarf Fortress window has the focus.
# Press {{k|Alt}}+{{k|Print Screen}} to capture the active window. The image will be placed in your operating system clipboard.
#* If you want to capture the whole screen, press {{k|Print Screen}} instead.
# Open your image editor (usually MSPaint).
# Press {{k|Ctrl}}+{{k|v}} to paste the saved screenshot into paint.
#* You now have a bitmap of the screenshot. You can edit this as with any bitmap in paint. (Handy for circling key areas, adding arrows, blacking out personal/private info, cropping, whatever.)
# Under <File>, select <Save As...>, and save your image as a .PNG or .JPG file. For standard tilesets, PNG files are preferred as they tend to be smaller and do not lose any detail during compression.

=== MacOS ===
# Press {{k|Command}}+{{k|Shift}}+{{k|4}}; the mouse cursor will turn into a crosshair.
# Press {{k|Space}} to turn the mouse cursor into a camera icon.
# Click on the window you want to capture.
#* A new PNG file appears on your desktop, which you can rename and upload.

== Adding an image to the wiki ==

=== Upload to a new File: page ===
First, your image needs to be uploaded to a simple wiki page that exists solely to contain your image.
# Give the file on your PC a ''unique and meaningful name'' (as per the [[rules#I]]). "7dwarves", "my fort" or "screenshot" probably aren't good choices!
# In the lower left sidebar of any wiki page, in the lower section marked "toolbox", click '''[[Special:Upload|Upload file]]'''.
# On the file upload page, use the '''Choose file''' button to select your file.
# It is considerate to fill in the '''Summary''' field with either a short description or the same text you might include under the image in your article.
# Click the '''Upload file''' button. This creates a new page in the wiki containing your file, using your file name.

=== Add to an article ===
Once your image is uploaded to a File: page, you can edit other pages to add it to them.
# Copy the image's name, which is the page name ''minus'' the first word, "File:".
#* If the image is on page [[:File:Copper_strike.PNG]], you want ''only'' '''Copper_strike.PNG'''.
# Go to the article where you want the image to appear and click '''edit'''.
# Add the name in double brackets, the same as creating any wiki active link, with the word "Image:", at the front of the image file name. Using just the file name gives the image as it was saved, so adding '''<nowiki>[[Image:Copper_strike.PNG]]</nowiki>''' to a wiki page gives this: <br/><br />
[[Image:Copper_strike.PNG]] <br/> <br />
That is the actual file, actual size.
# Click '''Show preview''' to make sure the layout <!--, sizing, caption and overall presentation are-->is to your satisfaction.
# Click '''Save''' to commit your changes.

=== Advanced layout ===
You can modify the appearance of your image in the wiki by adding [http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Help:Images additional options] after the file name, with pipes ( | ) between them. The most useful options are:
; Thumbnail : "thumb" reduces the file size, making it fit in a wiki article better. Clicking the thumbnail image takes the reader to the actual file page with the full-size image.
; Size : You can specify the size of the thumbnail by designating the maximum width in pixels, such as "150px" or "300px".
; Alignment : "left" or "right" of text (default is centered above/below.)
; Caption : adds comments below the image. All wiki editing tags can be used. No tag is needed, just a final pipe ( | ) and the text.
[[Image:Copper_strike.PNG|thumb|right|200px|''(click to enlarge)''<br />
'''Copper Strike'''<br />This dwarf has struck copper.]]
For example, if we type this:
<nowiki>[[Image:Copper_strike.PNG|thumb|right|200px|''(click to enlarge)''<br />
'''Copper Strike'''<br />This dwarf has struck copper.]]</nowiki>
We get an image that is (as shown to the right):
* '''thumb'''nailed to a smaller size (click to enlarge)
* Aligned '''right'''
* Sized to '''200''' pixels max ''(width or height, which hits that limit first)''
* & labeled with that exact text below it, including formatting and line breaks

== Posting an image in a forum ==
To post an image in a forum on the web takes a little more work, but the steps are parallel to the above.
# Create the file as above.
# You have to '''host''' it somewhere. There are many good free web-hosts available; do a web search for "image hosting" and you'll find all you need (and will probably recognize a few). Follow the instructions to upload the image - should be generally similar to the '''Upload file''' steps for the wiki, above.
#:''(If you find an image on the web, it's possible to right-click and, in "properties", get the address there and use that as the hosted image. However, this is unreliable - if that image gets removed or that page changed, you can lose your link, and some sites prevent such linking. Uploading your own copy of an image to your own hosting site account is the only reliable method.)
#* Note - Do '''not''' use this wiki to host images for linking on the forum or web - that is against the Terms of Use of most wikis, including this one.
# Once you have it hosted, copy the name - it will usually be something like
#: <nowiki>http://www.freeimagehostingsite.com/albums/blah/blah/blah/myimage.jpg</nowiki>
# Each forum or bulletin board uses slightly different code; the [http://www.bay12games.com/forum/index.php DF/Bay12 games forum] uses:
#: '''<nowiki></nowiki>'''
#* ''(To see the code that a different forum uses, find a post with an image in it and click '''quote''' - you should be able to see the coding that precedes and follows the file URL/address (the <nowiki>"http://...etc etc"</nowiki> part). You can copy that, paste it into your post, and then replace that file name with your hosted image file name - done.)
# Use '''preview''' to make sure it looks right, and then post.

==Edit the image==
Use any image editor - MS Paint is common on Windows systems.

Open the image, edit as you prefer (adding text, circles, arrows, or cropping for size), and then save - maybe to a slightly different file name, so your original isn't corrupted - just in case.

Pro Tip: ''First'', make a copy of the image and give ''that'' the new name - then open and edit ''that'' file. Then, when you hit {{k|Ctl}} + {{k|s}} out of habit, you'll be saving to that file name, not over the original.
