Plump helmets are mushrooms that can be grown by dwarves for food, and are perhaps the most widely popular of the six underground crops. They are edible raw, but can also be cooked in a kitchen or brewed into dwarven wine, placing them among the most versatile of crops. Because they are also very fast-growing (taking only 25 days to mature) and can grow the whole year 'round, they often are the staple food crop of many fortresses, which enjoy multiple harvests per season.

Keep in mind that cooking plants destroys their seeds, or in this case their spawn*. Both eating a plant raw and brewing it will leave seed/spawn behind, which can then be transferred to a seed bag, planted and used to grow more. Farming this crop is advisable to newer players because of the speed of growth and the easily edible result, as opposed to other crops that require plant processing and/or cooking to be edible.

Future plans
What happens when you build a tomb, then take the roof off
Tombs can't be built outdoors. What happens if you take the roof off an already constructed tomb?

Different methods of building under magma
In the Complete and Utter Newby Tutorial for Dwarf Fortress, I ended up trying to flood the place when I was finished, and as the water started covering the magma it, obviously, began turning into obsidian. However occasionally water would flow diagonally and create a wall/block of obsidian not properly connected which would collapse into the magma pipe. However, after a few times of this happening they began to *stack*. It got me thinking: would it be possible to drip water into a pipe in a controlled fashion to create naturally forming walls of Obsidian at the bottom of a magma pipe? If so, you could slowly build a closed section of obsidian walls to the surface, then build a pump over the top and pump all of the magma out from the middle? Safer than creating a ring of pumps, surely...

Different methods of building underwater
Like magma, but in reverse. Harder to achieve, but it could be useful, surely. Also to consider: dropping walls into rivers, see if they remain standing. Does water slow the descent of objects, so they won't crash into rubble when they reach the bottom of the river/ocean? What about natural rock walls?

The glorious autumn cleaning of Okirlogem, class of 213!

The cage traps worked a little too well... Had to find somewhere separate to put all the goblins! Finally managed to clean out all the cages and give my military a workout when the caravan from the Mountainhomes stopped by...

17th of Granite, 214 (Early Spring) The aftermath of a siege
A tragedy occurred today. After his squad received heavy losses during a goblin siege, Marksdwarf Amost Melbilelis Arbostlorbam went insane and began firing on his fellow dwarves on the storage level. Thankfully the rest of the military was still nearby and they were able to subdue him after a brief but furious struggle.
Civilian casualties were minimal; only one dwarf was killed and two injured. One, a child, received light injuries and one of our miners received an arrow in the leg. We expect they will recover quickly.
It is with great sorrow that we mourn the passing of our fellow Amost Melbilelis Arbostlorbam. He was a good dwarf who worked diligently to protect our home, and he will be buried with honour.

20th of Granite, 214 (Early Spring) The aftermath of the aftermath
Only a few days have passed since Amost's death and the repercussions are still being felt. His squadmates have been suffering the most.

Since his death, Urist Kodgidthur threw a tantrum and was stuck down and Mosus Lunineth has simply gone insane and now wanders the fortress, babbling madly. This leaves Urdim Tekkud as the sole remaining member of The Arches of Carnage. One can only wonder how long it will be until she too succumbs to madness.

I have moved her into one of the other squads, The Geared Rifts, in the hope that she can recover through her grief with the support of her fellows, but at the moment her chances seem bleak.

10th Slate, 214. (Mid-Spring) Commentary on a Countess
The Countess just gave birth to another girl. What is this, her eighth child? I swear, that woman has nothing better to do with her time.

I was wrong, she has *ten*. And a cat, the vile creatures.
The cats, I mean.

21st of Slate, 214 (Mid-Spring) Leatherworking mood
When I first heard one of our dwarves had been taken by a strange mood, I was worried. But, thank Osram, is wasn't another thrice-damned possession! I swear, this places is haunted. Turns out it was just a leatherworker, but all told I'm not complaining as long as he's not possessed. He quickly took over a workshop and immediately sprang to work.

And... I just received news that Urist Kodgidthur, the last remaining marksdwarf, went stark raving mad. Poor lass. I only hope she doesn't suffer long.

26th of Slate (Mid-Spring) Wait, what?
Well, I can honestly say I've never heard that one before. o.0

1st of Felsite, 214 (Late-Spring) Ushat's artifact
The first day of the new month and I get a message saying our leatherworker has completed his secret construction! I hurried over to his workshop to find....

While I shouldn't have expected more, I almost feel like this is some sort of elaborate prank call. I'll give *you* shat... Nevertheless, I checked it out.

Huh. It has us on it, back from when we just started this little place. Heh, that brings back memories. Okay, so maybe it's not *all* bad...

16th Hematite, 214 (Early Summer) The Siege
Well, that'll teach me to wish for some interesting times. Well, okay, it won't. Anyway.
The first victim was claimed in short order, poor Olon Libashdum.

One of our legendary champions, responsible for the death of no less than forty two goblins, was shot and killed. What she was doing out there alone in the first place is anyone's guess, but damn, I wish I'd had time to build a tomb to honour her.

Godamnit! Now some of my champions have mysteriously broken ranks and charged the enemy, heedless of my orders!

Amazingly, one of them managed to survive their headlong rush into doom. Bellowing savage war cries, their fellows emerged from the depths to do battle with the beasts that had slain their comrades, again against my orders. Somehow, amazingly, they managed to break the back of the army however, and drive the enemy survivors back in a rout.

Though they did so foolishly, they will be commended for their actions. Those that have fallen will be buried with honour, but it grieves me to know that those that fell today will not receive the entombment they deserve. I will make it my highest priority to make sure future soldiers will be able to be buried in a more fitting manner.

5th Galena, 214 (Late Summer) Rebuilding an army
Urdim Tekkud died of thirst today.

Our military lies in shambles. recruiting will begin immediately, drafting dwarves from non-essential positions of the fortress, starting with the most able-bodied. Work on tombs for our most noble of dwarves, the military who give their lives to protect us, is progressing well. I discovered today that the tomb I had created some time ago for one of our grandest of champions had been filled with her body, presumably soon after the siege. Also present, in the small casket to one side for that purpose was the body of her lover, a member of the fortress guard who-I hope-died fighting alongside her.

I'd hoped to take a picture of the lavish tomb I'd created for her, but someone's scattered clothing all through it. I'll have the offending items dumped, then get an image.

Also I recently discovered that, uh, one of our engravers died from thirst, which was actually my fault. >.> He'd taken to recuperate from a wound in a bed I was using for some masons to sleep in when I locked them in to make native gold blocks, and may have forgotten about him when the siege started. I'm hoping it won't cause too many problems... <.<

16th Sandstone, 214 (Mid-Autumn) Who is Datan Crystalassaults?
Well, the caravans have been and gone. It was another decent trading year with the Mountainhomes.

Good news again, however! The military are progressing well. I started them out on wrestling, and I am now slowly training them up in other weapon disciplines. In addition to which, Lor Imkethathel, one of our metalsmiths was taken by a mood and made a artifact mini-forge. It has a couple of pictures of a dwarf called "Datan Crystalassaults", which I've seen on a few artifacts now. I don't know who the fellow is, either. Haven't been able to figure it out.

The elven siege of 215
I actually honestly wasn't sure what was going on at first, but suddenly, ninjas! Hundreds of them!

Is it bad that I'm actually excited for my first scrap against the elves? These bastards have gotten inside my first line of defenses, but it's time to unleash some fury...
I had the lever pulled, blocking off their escape while I mobilized the military. It seems my previous cross training to keep the civilians in jobs and to train up for military duty was a wise move, with my wrestlers quickly making mincemeat of theirs.

...

Well, in the end, that went surprisingly easily. I'll keep the military on guard though, just in case something else pops up...

25th of Felsite 215 Erm...
Whoops. Cutting corners in deconstruction has led to my first casualty.
On an unrelated note, the Countess has had *another* child! This woman really has nothing better to do with her time, does she?

14th of Hematite, 215, (Early Summer) The merchant blockade
Human caravans, yay! We've needed some wood. But ruh-roh!

Got the military out there quick-smart (seems I left them sitting around since the elven siege, whoops) and hopefully I'll be able to catch them before they scare off the caravans.
Oh, and there's a kid in the workshop demanding shells, poor bastard. Needing shell around here is more or less a death sentence. I need to start forbidding the stuff when it's not needed, really.

27th of Hematite (Early Summer) Operation Goldplate
The siege was ended relatively bloodlessly. On our side of course. We senselessly slaughtered the other guys, ho ho ho. Merchants are unpacking happily while I get my latest project started. I decided, what *am* I going to do with all of this gold we have just lying around? Our crafts and food are more valuable. We can't make it into weapons or armour (only because we're out of coke, sigh, and even if we could steel would be better) we can't eat it, but it *does* look pretty.... And it was only after finishing gold-plating Olan Zulash's tomb that I had the brilliant idea to wow merchants and immigrants by covering my entire fortress with gold. Not from top to bottom, of course, just the bits foreigners will see, like the entire outside rock areas and the trading station. You can see here the start we've made. Gold floors with walls soon to go up; once I'm ready I'll rip up that bridge and make *that* out of gold too, and pull up the traps and put gold underneath all of those, then replace them. It'll be fun!

2nd Opal, (Mid-winter) The Doomed Mood
Well... It's been pretty quiet around here lately. Managed to get some stuff finished, like the extra tombs for my most legendary militarydwarves. I'm still kinda torn on whether to have one dwarf to a tomb or start making one tomb for a whole squad.

Operation Goldplate is going badlyish. I managed to finish off the trading post area, then tear up the post itself and rebuild it out of platinum bars, but I've almost run out of native gold blocks, and I don't seem to have any more native gld in the mines to make more. So, all the useless chumps who had nothing better to do are now all miners and are excavating large swathes at a time from the lowest level of the fortress as they can go and working their way up.

That's not the latest news, though. I got a message that one of our glassmakers had been taken by a mood. I wasn't very happy about it, because I assumed he'd want sand and we don't have any at all, so he's likely to go mad. But after a while and him not taking a workshop of some kind, I eventually tracked him down... to the prison.

Turns out he's in there for a violation of a production order, probably for glass items when we don't. Have. Any. Sand. By the gods I hate these nobles. I regret ever having assigned any fortress and royal guards at all. If I ever run another fortress again I won't.

A few details on the rest of the picture: There's piles of food and drink in the prison because I was experimenting to see if prisoners would feed themselves if food was provided, rather than relying on the prison guards who almost let them starve, the dumb asses. Apparently it doesn't work. Must be part of the punishment, I suppose. On the right I have my pump training center, giving some of the slackers work and training them up for the military, if necessary. Down the bottom was a huge load of magnetite ore I uncovered. If only I had coal to smelt it with... *grumbles* Next fort is also going to be next to a volcano, if I can find a good site. Above everything else it my workshops area. It's quite large, and holds most of the production of the fortress. You can see the dining area up top left, and the little room hanging off it is the clerk's room so he has somewhere of his own to do his work. That's a, uh, finished goods stockpile just above the prison, with a wood stockpile just above that, because the carpenter's are just above *that*.

So... yeah. If, or more probably when the glassmaker *does* go insane, at least he'll already be restrained.

On more pleasant topics, my goblin cage room is filling up quickly again. Winter seems to be the season for them. I can't be bothered throwing them down the hole again for marksdwarf practice, even though I really *should*. So instead I've moved the dragon cage down there for an.... experiment. Note that all creatures in this image are safely locked away in cages.

I've locked it with a double door, but I think a smarter and safer way to do it is to build a support in the gap and link that to a lever so it can be removed from a safe distance. I'm moving all the goblins into the one cage next to the dragon which are linked to the lever just outside the door. I have to build traps covering the hall from there on so I can hopefully capture the dragon again after I'm done. So, when completed I will: release all the creatures from their cages - laugh manically as the goblins are burnt to crisps - collapse the support and let the dragon out over the cage traps - hopefully recapture it. We'll see how that works out.

Also, as I write, I'm told that we actually have a huge pile of gold nuggets sitting around in a refuse pile in the gold block production room that I'd forgotten about. Whoops. Reclaimed a whole bunch, and as soon as I can get rid of this wounded guy who's taken up a bed in there so I don't end up with another death on my hands I'll start up production again. Also, the glassmaker got his workshop and claimed it, but he wants a bunch of things we don't and will never have. So... Sucks to be him? Callous of me, I know, but there's really nothing I can do bar make sure he doesn't harm anyone else...

Also... The countess has had *another* kid. A boy, this time. This makes.... Holy crap, twelve kids? Three boys, nine daughters. Seriously. That woman needs to slow down.

20th Felsite, 216 (Late Spring) The Armourer's Ghost
Had a planter or something become possessed a few months ago, so I didn't really worry about it and went "meh" when he turned out a malachite toy axe. Didn't pay any attention until actually looking at it today, and it was rather... odd.

It's... weird. We lost our legendary armourer a while ago, and I almost feel like, perhaps, he's come back to us, not wanting to be forgotten, maybe... I think I'll pay more attention the next time I get a possessed mood.

Amazingly, one of them managed to survive their headlong rush into doom. Somehow, amazingly, they managed to break the back of the army however, and drive the enemy survivors back in a rout.

16th Sandstone, 214 (Mid-Autumn)
Well, the caravans have been and gone. It was another decent trading year with the Mountainhomes.

Good news again, however! The military are progressing well. I started them out on wrestling, and I am now slowly training them up in other weapon disciplines. In addition to which, Lor Imkethathel, one of our metalsmiths was taken by a mood and made a artifact mini-forge. It has a couple of pictures of a dwarf called "Datan Crystalassaults", which I've seen on a few artifacts now. I don't know who the fellow is, either. Haven't been able to figure it out.

The siege of 215
I actually honestly wasn't sure what was going on at first, but suddenly, ninjas!

The glorious autumn cleaning of Okirlogem, class of 213!
17th of Granite, 214 (Early Spring)
20th of Granite, 214 (Early Spring)

While I shouldn't have expected more, I almost feel like this is some sort of elaborate prank call. I'll give *you* shat... Nevertheless, I checked it out.

It is with great sorrow that we mourn the passing of our fellow Amost Melbilelis Arbostlorbam. He was a good dwarf who worked diligently to protect our home, and he will be buried with honour.

My current fortress is a reclaimed one, due to a fire that got into one of my guardtowers' food storage. In the old fortress, I had managed to get a Baron, who was soon skipping right up to Duke and Incoming king after a couple of immigrants. Well, after reclaiming, I proceeded as normal, except, even though my value is still incredibly high from the fortress (1 million+ created wealth, and 400k exported, now), I recieved a count within it's specified area of requirement, but not the Baron before. Even still, My Count does not seem to be upgrading to Duke anytime soon, seeing as I have 188 dwarves, now. Anyone have any ideas, now? Jwguy 12:56, 6 June 2009 (UTC)
:I apologize, I was indeed incorrect. You do start with a Bookkeeper, which in very short order can be upgraded to a Treasurer. Unsure of requirements, possibly only requires 20 dwarves like the sheriff. My fortress has one and I haven't even done anything besides changed who had bookkeeping and set it to higher priority (did not build study yet). That's probably what got me confused since the bookkeeper upgrades very quickly. Lightning4 18:11, 31 October 2007 (EDT)
"Your original expedition leader will be the fourth dwarf down in the starting screen(the one in the middle)." This does not seem to hold true; I have a newly-developed habit of making the last dwarf on the screen (used to be my designated hauler-peasant) into the administrator, with all the social skills for filling the four starter noble roles. He gets auto-assigned to all four administrative positions; I'm thinking that instead of being fixed or random, the starting assignment is based on social skills. --Alfador 00:29, 1 November 2007 (EDT)
I had a Philosopher show up last night. I'm unsure of the requirement to get him; the only really notable thing that had happened was I got over 100 dwarves. I'm adding him to the list of Nobles, though, since I can confirm he still exists in the new version. I also divided the page structure between Appointed and Immigrant nobles, since the current header was misleading (Dungeon Master and Philosopher cannot be appointed). --Zurai 20:55, 10 November 2007 (EST)
I had the king show up tonight. "The King arrives, dressed as a peasant." I have no idea what the requirements were. I missed the 1051 and 1052 dwarf caravans due to prolonged sieges, and had no immigrants those years. 1053 I had the caravan; a season later a wave of immigration brought my total dwarves up to 37. In the spring the king arrived, along with enough others to bring the population to 63. At that time I was notified that the Captain of the Guard position was available. Only thing I can think is that I hit adamantine during the siege years, and mistakenly built a number of ridiculously valuable adamantine objects. (Door, Coffin, etc.) This has raised my fortress value to 1.3 million. Is 1 million value perhaps the trigger? I have no coins, and no nobles other than the starting 4 positions. I did not appoint a sheriff. Doctorlucky 04:15, 15 November 2007 (EST)
:In the last version, hitting adamantine without proper requirement for the king triggered the reaction of having the king arrive dressed as a paysant. Maybe it's the same here. --Eagle of Fire 04:20, 15 November 2007 (EST)
What determines expedition leader?
There are a number of situations to test out:
* No social skills on any dwarves
** Probably random, possibly based on the Dwarf's thoughts and preferences
* Majority of social skills on one dwarf (various positions in start order)
** Test case 1: only one dwarf has social skills - gives that dwarf as leader and all positions
* Social skills spread between multiple dwarves
** Is there any weight on which skill determines the leader?
Because I've got a Count totally uncontrolable, who can't stop throwing tantrums in the middle of my fortress, which is somewhat tiresome... So, if I just can lock him into his bedroom and let him starve to death, it would be great, but I don't know if it won't cause more problems..
:Killing off your nobles only really has the penalties associated with killing any other dwarf - their friends and family will be upset, and you lose that dwarf's abilities. In the case of nobles a replacement will usually turn up with the next migrant wave, unless your fort no longer meets the requirements for that noble. You can, of course, kill the replacement too - with lesser repercussions as he won't have had time to make any friends yet.--TangoThree 06:38, 26 April 2008 (EDT)
Nobles should all be upset by the death of the tax collector. When a noble is buried, other dwarves could be sealed in the tomb.
::::This doesn't sound like it has much effect on a "kill early, kill often" approach — e.g. preparing their death room immediately upon their arrival, and luring them in via a profile-set lever pull job. The count won't be popular (at least in your fort) if nobody knows him, unless he's popular by reputation or something. Angry relatives? If they show up friendly but ready to tantrum, I draft / lure them into killing rooms; if they're hostile, I deal with them like a siege. Nobles all being upset by the tax collector means nothing if I've killed all the nobles. And it's not like I'm going to make tombs for them, either. Only the law enforcement one looks like an issue.

::::On the other hand, maybe that's the point — you're penalised if you just randomly kill nobles because you don't like them, but you're also allowed to run a "screw the nobility, we're a free communal fortress" game (or have a "kill the entire current regime, we want a revolution" event) so long as you actively enforce it. — Wisq (talk) 19:02, 31 May 2009 (UTC)
On one fortress my count had 3 Countess Consorts, one was his wife and the other 2 were leftovers from the previous 2 counts. One Baron happened to be standing under a drawbridge as it came down (don't ask what a drawbridge was doing in his room, lets just say he wasn't going to get that rock crystal item he wanted) and his widow was promoted to Countess Consort when the new Count showed up to replace him a few seasons later. That Count was tending a farm when a squad of gobs beat the living tar out of him and his widow remained a Countess Consort even after the third noble arrived to replace the dead Count. Despite the population cap, the Baroness, Tax Collector, and Hammerer arrived by themselves.
Thoughts about a lesser's pretentious <whatever> arrangements seem to be a common source of noble unhappiness. (this is especially annoying for me as my mayor has an artifact in her bedroom raising it to Royal and my queen has no list of likes and dislikes, so I can't make her happy just by having the right booze) it would be interesting to know what exactly causes the difference between "upset" and "shattered", how to avoid it, and good ways to mitigate it's effects. :Well, I suspect that the difference is related to the difference in room value, although I suppose that's stating the obvious. Another obvious solution would be to move the artefact into the higher-ranked Noble's room, assuming that's possible. Otherwise, I suppose the simplest (if not the easiest) way to mitigate its effects is to add as much value as possible to the Queen's room. As well as furniture, you can get surprising results with smoothings, engravings, and building an expensive floor over the engraved one if you have no qualms about exploiting such strangeness.--Quil 18:07, 6 January 2009 (EST)
::It does require that there be a significant difference; having them at roughly equal worth will cause unhappy thoughts, which was my problem in my most recent fortress. I just housed all my nobles in the same residential stack as everyone else, adding extra room additions off the main design for offices, dining rooms, etc. The Count's room was a LITTLE better as his walls happened to be ore-bearing, but it wasn't enough to please him, hence the statue.--ThunderClaw 10:04, 7 January 2009 (EST)
When I go into the build menu to make walls or floors and try and choose "gold bars" as the material used, it says I apparently have 8 when I've checked in my stocks menu and have a little over 100. I checked to make sure they hadn't been dumped or forbidden, so I assume it's not a bug or something, and that it just takes more bars to construct a wall than stone blocks, which makes sense. (10 bars for 1 wall or floor section?) Can anyone else confirm this? And if so, I'd imagine for cost-effectiveness I'll have to start making Native Gold Blocks and doing it that way. It's something to consider, too, if anyone wants to start making iron or bronze or whatever walls out of a metal that doesn't come in a block form.Gnavin 09:55, 29 July 2009 (UTC)

Okay; just noticed this; but in the newest version I saw rain refilling a murky pool. That is that one of the little ponds that started on my map (generated on previous version) that dried out on the first summer; suddenly started generating depth one water on squares where rain was hitting. I checked all the other murky pools on the map and they too were beginning to refill. Someone please confirm this for me and if you don't feel like updating the information on this and relevant pages I'll get it done. --Silver 01:59, 19 July 2008 (EDT)
No squares that weren't ponds at the start of the map were seen to generate any water or any steam. If its indoors and still magically generates water when it rains is an important distinction. --Silver 02:09, 19 July 2008 (EDT)
I wanted to make a well out of a small rock hole I'd dug out, so I had water pumped into it via an aqueduct (more complicated than it needed to be, I know) from a murky pool. Now when it rains, *only* the murky pools refill, and not my muddy ground tiles even though they're covered in a layer of 2/7 water, which is slightly annoying. I assume there's no way to make my man made pond into a murky pool so rain will refill it.Gnavin 12:36, 28 July 2009 (UTC)
:: I'm still on it too. I'm waiting for the last offspring to be adults to make sure this isn't blocking new ones, plus 3 years to be sure, but it looks like the donkeys and groundhogs have really stopped breeding and the rest too. The requirements for getting pregnant seem to be rather low; having a free male and female somewhere on the map for a short time seems to be enough. --Koltom 22:58, 28 March 2008 (EDT)
: I've confirmed that caged animals do not, in fact, mate. I did a controlled study with animals in cages, specifically with dogs. I brought along two dogs on a new fortress. As soon as they had puppies, I slaughtered the parents and caged the puppies. As immigrants came along, all newborn puppies were immediately caged, and I paid specific attention to which animals were giving birth. Over a 5 year period, 12 puppies matured into dogs (2 are still puppies), none of which gave birth. The only source of puppies were the pets. --JeebusSez 22:10, 20 May 2008 (EDT)
:: animals reproduce asexually anyway, for some reason - i had a walled up puppy that grew up and had a puppy of its own, as well as a single (tame) mountain goat in my fortress, which had two sets of kids - i butchered the first lot so no, they didnt impregnate their mother... Twiggie 16:45, 12 July 2008 (EDT)
:::Every fortress I've ever played contradicts what is reported here. I've never seen a tame animal in a cage *not* breed. I've been caging and breeding tame animals (captured and imported) since 2D. I suppose I'll have to do some more testing. Not so sure why the user was able to produce these results. I'm also confused as to why they would slaughter the parents and what sort of effect that is supposed to have on the data. It could be that this somehow prevents the puppies from ever learning how to breed, or some other strange effect. See the picture at discussion for the meat industry.Schm0 16:57, 20 April 2009 (UTC)

::::I store all my puppies in cages aside from a chained male/female/female. Never have had a matured dog in a cage give birth. Isn't this something that has been tested/confirmed before? The standard advice on the forums is to cage cats to prevent breeding, and it seems to solve the problems. Slaughtering the parents wouldn't cause some strange effect as children don't learn anything from parents currently. How did you do your testing? If they were matured when you stuck them in the cage then chances are they were already pregnant thanks to the spores effect. --Elvang 17:45, 20 April 2009 (UTC)
Cages and Fluids
Do creatures need to breath in a cage? If you have an unconstructed/constructed cage underwater does the inhabitant drown? If you have a unconstructed/constructed magma-proof cage under magma does the inhabitant burn up? Yvain 08:29, 6 April 2008 (EDT)
:Here is the experiment I conducted:
:* built a large deep empty pool
:* put a goblin cage and a cage stockpile at the bottom of it
:* waiting for a dwarf to put some goblin cages in the stockpile
:* turned on the pumps to flood the room
:* had a dwarf throw (pit/pond) another goblin into the pool
:* waiting until the thrown (pit/ponded) goblin drowned and then emptied the pool
:Results: Neither the goblins in the constructed cage or the goblins in the unconstructed cage in the stockpile died. So in conclusion it appears that caged creatures do not need air. Yvain 23:25, 9 April 2008 (EDT)
Trading caged animals
Okay, so I just tried ordering my caged Fire Imp (wooden cage, go figure ^_^) to the trade depot so that the humans could take it away. A dwarf instead opened the cage and let the thing go, and the now empty cage was taken to the depot. Fortunately the humans smote it before it could set anything alight, but it would've been nice to sell the thing to them, so they could've smitten it on their own time. Does this always happen with caged wild animals? --Raumkraut 14:28, 12 July 2008 (EDT)
:Like anything else being taken to the trade depot - order the container (in this case the cage) to be taken to the depot not the contents. You ordered just the contents, so they took just the contents out of the container.GarrieIrons 00:18, 13 July 2008 (EDT)
::Not so. I've just tried with a "dog cage (Acacia)". The relevant cage shows up under both "pets" and "cages" sections of the "bring to depot" list. Neither of these options caused the dog to be released from the cage. :On the other hand, if you don't feel like spending time setting up mechanisms and pulling levers, and you happen to be trading, this is a decent way to free up cage traps while letting your military practice. : You train animals in a kennel (b->k), by a Dwarf with the Animal Trainer skill activated. Depending on the animal, you either use the command to train a small animal or a large animal. == Cage Trading Caveats-Elves ==

I'm not sure it's directly relevant to pretty much anything, but I found the section about elves trading wounded animals to be very interesting. Has anyone here read "Lords and Ladies", from Terry Pratchett's Discworld series? In it, elves are described as being particularly cruel, and are said to be good at keeping creatures alive- sometimes for months(with the suggestion being that they torture them very slowly to death).

Could DF elves perhaps be similar? Apparently Discworld elves are based off pre-Tolkien British and European folklore, but I don't know enough about that to be able to draw a reasonable conclusion.
Anyway, just wanted to throw that out there. Perhaps it's not actually a bug? ;) --Gnavin

Confirming having children in cages
I noticed that the page says it's unsure whether or not animals can bear children when while in cages. To my experience they do, I recently had some donkey foals born when everything but my wardogs were caged up. They were also standing around right next to the cages. Anyone care to confirm this so we can add it to the page? --Eurytus 3:14, 28 March 2008 (EST)
:It says 'It is unsure if animals in a cage will mate, but animals can bear children when caged.' You just approved second part. What are you going to change?--Dorten 05:01, 28 March 2008 (EDT)
: I get what you're saying, I think. I'll spade it a little more to see if the couple continues to bear children even though they're both in the cage at all time before I consider changing anything.--Eurytus 5:34, 28 March 2008 (EST)

And if I'd selected the fire imp rather than the cage, then why would the (then empty) cage be taken to the depot? --Raumkraut 13:18, 13 July 2008 (EDT)
:On the other hand, if you don't feel like spending time setting up mechanisms and pulling levers, and you happen to be trading, this is a decent way to free up cage traps while letting your military practice. Station your military by the cage traps, mark them for trade, and watch the sparks fly. The civilians always run away right quick while the military fills the trapped goblins/animals with bloody holes. -Fuzzy 15:33, 19 September 2008 (EDT)
How can you train them? I want some rats, dragonflies, and some lizards as pets.--Seaneat 03:12, 4 August 2008 (EDT)
: You train animals in a kennel (b->k), by a Dwarf with the Animal Trainer skill activated. Depending on the animal, you either use the command to train a small animal or a large animal. I'm not sure right now of the condition of the cage or trap in which the animal is stored but I am sure it has to be stockpiled, at least. --FJH 18:56, 24 February 2009 (EST)
Cage Trading Caveats-Elves

Perhaps it's not actually a bug? ;)
