Scholars of various races will visit your library, often bringing books of their own. Occasionally they will take your books with them when they leave.

Setting up a Library
* Hit i to designate the zone for your library. Set it to a meeting area with m, hit l to designate it as a location. See the location page for more details.
* Build bookcases to store books and scrolls
* Build boxes/bags to store writing material
* Build tables and chairs
* Designate scholars and scribes as desired

A functional room is a zone extending out from a piece of furniture that defines the room, created when the room is defined from that piece of furniture. A room, as the game understands it, is not defined by walls and doors. A chamber with a bed in it, for example, is not yet a bedroom; you have to select the bed and define a bedroom from it in order for it to be a room.

Everything covered by that zone is considered part of the room, and will contribute to both the room's value and its effectiveness. This zone does not need to extend to the walls. It is well possible to define several such rooms in one actual enclosed space; they may even overlap, although this comes at a penalty to the room's value. The maximum size of a room is 60x60 tiles.

Creating
To create a room, you must first have built something capable of supporting a room from the build menu, such as a table or bed. Then you must select the completed item in question with the q command and choose to create a room. The room's radius extends outward in a rectangle, but will stop when it hits walls or external doors. If you first build the door to create a closed space, then the game will define the room so you won't need to resize it unless it is very big.

If you want to have a door dividing a single, defined room into multiple areas without blocking the room's zone, you can set the door to "internal" in the door's q menu. Rooms do not have to be blocked off on all sides, and can even overlap, but for various reasons you will usually want to avoid overlapping rooms and give them proper boundaries.

In general, you only need to define a room from one object in the room. For instance, a communal dining room is defined from one table -- just give the room a large enough radius to cover the whole space.

Rooms can not span z-levels; when you define a room it can only be on a single level.

Assigning
Rooms can be assigned to specific dwarves. When dwarves have their own room, happy thoughts occur when they sleep in it (alternatively, unhappy thoughts can occur when they do not have their own room to sleep in). Also, most nobles require an assignment to a room.

If you assign two or more rooms of the same type to a dwarf, the value of the piece of furniture that defines the room determines which room the dwarf will prefer to use. For example, if you give a dwarf two bedrooms, the dwarf will prefer to use the room with the higher quality bed, regardless of the comparative quality values of each room.

You can assign rooms to dwarves manually or automatically. If a dwarf (who does not already have a room) is ready to sleep and there is an unassigned room available, it will be spontaneously claimed by that dwarf. Married couples will share a bedroom, with the exception of some nobles.

Locations
Rooms can be assigned to a location—such as a bedroom being assigned to a tavern as a rented room—from the location menu when a room is selected with q.

Quality
Most dwarves don't have high expectations when it comes to rooms. A communal dining room and a communal dormitory is enough for the general populace, though making the communal dining room high quality and giving them individual quarters will give them happy thoughts, helping to avoid tantrums.

Nobles, on the other hand, require rooms of a minimal quality, containing certain furniture. Not meeting their demands will make them stressed, and may prevent them from functioning at their full capacity.

Room quality is determined by the total value of the room's floor and walls, plus the value of any furniture or other constructions in room. If the floor area of two or more rooms overlap, each such room is reduced in value by 75%124938.msg4169769#msg4169769, but a wall can be part of multiple rooms without causing a decrease in value. Doors not marked as internal are not counted towards the value of any room124938.msg4172663#msg4172663, though they can separate rooms without the 75% loss of value. A room that is not entirely enclosed by walls also suffers a value penalty124938.msg4169446#msg4169446.

Room quality levels can be viewed through the View Rooms/Buildings (R) command.

Increasing room value
Making a large room, so that it has more floor and wall space, is an easy way to start out a high quality room, as is forming the room with natural walls of valuable stone like limestone or obsidian (to make a really valuable room, put it in a magnetite cluster) or keep an eye out for gem clusters. (Note that mined tiles now revert to the base layer material, but a ruby pillar in the middle of a room still adds substantial value.) Once a room has been mined out, its value can be increased by smoothing and engraving the floor and walls.

Afterwards, placing valuable furniture (Preferably encrusted with gems or artifact quality) is an option for increasing value, but not the only one. Constructions (including workshops) inside a room increase a room's value, so you can use non-furniture artifacts in a construction to increase room value:

Type
Building
Weapon
Weapon Trap
Barrel
Dyer's shop, Ashery
Anvil
Forge
:* - gains additional quality from skilled architecture and construction

weapon traps are an excellent way to increase room value while being conservative with space: One trap can contain 10 valuable components plus a mechanism, all of which can be encrusted with gems.

Also, Levers have the special property that they can be used to stack an unlimited number of mechanisms, all of which count towards room value, in one tile. To add mechanisms simply link the lever to a deconstructible building such as a cage and pull the lever — one of mechanisms used for the link will remain in the lever. You can repeat this process as many times as you want until you increase the room's value to the desired level.

View Rooms/Buildings
The R command will bring up a list of all rooms, activity zones, stockpiles, and built furniture. It can be a very long list!

Rooms which have overlap (reducing their value) will be highlighted in red.
The paper industry deals with the creation and processing of paper sheets, and further processing into quires and scrolls.

Raw material
There are three kinds of raw material that can be processed into paper sheets:
*Papyrus
*Cloth plants
**rope reed
**pig tail
**hemp
**cotton
**ramie
**flax
**jute
**kenaf
*Animal hide

Processing
Papyrus can be directly made into papyrus sheets at a farmer's workshop. Cloth plants are milled to slurry in a mill, then pressed to sheet in a screw press. Processing animal hides is more complex; you need to produce quicklime from calcium carbonate stones at a kiln, then process the quicklime to milk of lime at an ashery. Finally, the hide and and milk of lime are used in a tanner's shop to create a parchment sheet.
If the hide is from a cow, it's called "vellum sheet", otherwise it will take on the name of the animal (i.e. pig parchment sheet, sheep parchment sheet).

Finished goods
The sheets are then used to make quires or scrolls (with rollers). Quires can be bound into codices.

Alcohol is the favored drink of the dwarves; a dwarf will drink booze an average of four times per season to satisfy their thirst, and although they can subsist on water, without booze they will work increasingly slowly and garner a bad thought. Dwarves like to have some variety in what they drink, and will garner a bad thought if they are forced to drink the same variety of drink repeatedly ("has been tired of drinking the same old booze lately"). Every dwarf likewise has a preference for a favored drink, which is at first selected randomly from all possible alcoholic beverages but may change once they have sampled some of your fortress's products. Thus alcohol is important both for maintaining your fortress (at a minimum) and (with some investment in variety) for keeping your dwarves happy.

Acquisition
Most of the plants in the game can be turned into drink, and thus most drink is sourced from dwarven farming, both indoor and out. Most of the plants gathered from the wild can also be used for brewing, but the reduced yields relative to farming makes it a less ideal solution. Drinks can be sourced at embarkation, and taking at least a few barrels with you is recommended to hold your initial dwarves over until you can build a still. Caravans always bring some drinks along as well, although not enough to support a reasonably large fortress. Finally, honey acquired through beekeeping can be brewed into alcoholic mead, the only form of drink that is not derived from plants.

The most direct way to acquire the booze itself is through a still; large fortresses will usually have one or more dedicated brewers keeping the dwarven drinks cellar well stocked. To brew a drink a dwarf will need an empty watertight container of some kind, either a barrel or a large pot, and a stack of brewables. Each brewing job produces five units of alcohol per comestible consumed and deposits it in the container, recovering any plant seeds in the process. The size of a stack does not affect how long it take the brew it, which is based entirely on the brewer's skill, making brewing jobs performed on large stacks much more efficient then those done on individual consumables. Stacks of alcohol do not have quality levels, and the mechanism that determines the strength of a happy thought obtained by drinking alcohol is unclear(discuss).

Mechanics
Dwarven thirst is constrained by the important [ALCOHOL_DEPENDENT] creature token tag, which causes them to suffer severe performance penalties when deprived of alcohol. Thirsty dwarves increasingly lose speed in almost every activity, including basic movement; dwarves will also wait longer before drinking from a non-alcoholic water source, resulting in negative thoughts from thirst. Alcohol withdrawal appears in the dwarf's thoughts and preferences as "starting to work slowly due to its scarcity" after 3 months, "really wants a drink" after 6 months, "has gone without a drink for far, far too long" after 9 months, and finally "can't even remember the last time he/she had some" after an entire year. Precisely how much dwarves trudge their feet due to alcohol withdrawal is unknown, and is fertile grounds for more future !!SCIENCE!!.

Setting booze on fire will not cause it to explode, but exposing it to high temperatures will cause it to boil away. If the container is flammable, it (and, subsequently, the booze) will be consumed by fire; magma-safe containers would never be destroyed by magma, but any booze inside will likely quickly perish due to heat transfer (unless the container is made of nether-cap).

Magic exists in limited form in Dwarf Fortress. It normally only shows up in the form of necromancy. With modding, however, it is also one of the many ways that interactions can be manifested.

Necromancy is obtained in Adventurer mode by reading a slab that contains the secrets of life and death, traditionally obtained via necromancer towers (I). Their towers are often packed tightly with undead and usually more than one necromancer, who will not hesitate to raise any fresh corpses you make, or even the limbs of their minions that you chop off. But of course, if you can overcome the danger, the power is yours.

The Dwarven Atom Smasher is a nick name for a Drawbridge in waste disposal or militarily-significant applications. It exploits the implementation of drawbridges (not to be confused with retracting bridges) to utterly destroy any objects and most creatures in its target area. Implementation of bridges appears to have changed significantly since earlier versions -- Dwarven atom smashers are now functional only in a small subset of their previous roles. A DAS still works fine as a trash compactor to smash boulders, items, and fluids straight into oblivion.

Smashing against the ground
In this design, a drawbridge is built to come down on at least one tile of solid ground. The drawbridge is raised, the targets are placed (or move of their own volition) into position on that ground, and then the drawbridge is lowered, erasing the targets from existence. Most commonly, a garbage dump activity zone is used in order to place items beneath the drawbridge (as stockpiles cannot be placed on top of existing buildings), but other methods such as flowing water have been used with varying degrees of success.

Sand or dye in bags doesn't get erased while the bag does, creating a small pile of sand or dye on the ground.

Smashing upon closing
In this design, a very compact drawbridge (as little as one tile long) is used, and the target area is the one-tile wide anchoring area, where the bridge will close. This often uses walls, locked doors, or other solid objects, leaving the targets nowhere to go. The drawbridge is lowered, the targets are placed (or move of their own volition) into position on the tile(s) that the drawbridge will occupy when closing, and then the drawbridge is raised, squashing the targets flat.

Immune creatures
The performance of a DAS on creatures is a bit of a drawback. It's well known that special creatures with a certain size (elephants, Bronze colossus) will make it impossible to raise a drawbridge they are standing on as well as cause a drawbridge to immediately deconstruct if lowered upon the creature.

A grate is a furniture-type item. It is used as a construction material for wall grates and floor grates. Grates can be constructed from stone or ore (with the masonry labor at a mason's workshop), wood (with the carpentry labor in a carpenter's workshop), metal bars (with the blacksmithing labor at a forge), or glass (with the glassmaking labor at a glass furnace).

Wall Grate
A wall grate is basically a fortification, but with two differences:
* It is a building instead of a construction. It doesn't overwrite the tile below it, and it can be smashed by building destroyers.
* It can be linked to a lever or pressure plate. Once linked, it works like a linked door which doesn't stop fluids, arrows or Miasma when closed.
Wall grates set the boundary for the room being resized, but they do not provide support for the doors construction.
Unlike a constructed wall, the grate has some quality level and can be decorated.

Floor Grate
A floor grate is similar to a floor or a closed floor hatch in that it can be walked upon and blocks creature and item movement between Z-levels. However, it lets water and magma through like an open tile. Floor grates blocks projectiles, unlike wall grates. They do not block line of sight. Floor grates can be linked to a lever or a pressure plate. Triggered, a floor grate opens like a hatch, but with a 100-tick delay.

Floor grates must be attached orthogonally (i.e. not diagonally) to firm ground or some solid construction (a wall, floor, etc) if they are to be supported over empty space, not (just) other grates. Floor grates can also be placed directly on top of a non-constructed floor or staircase, rather than empty space, in which case it doesn't need any support next to it.

A floor grate does NOT count as solid construction. It will not support any buildings or constructions. However, you can designate a construction to be built orthogonally to it with no other supports. This will cause the construction to cave-in immediately after being completed. This can be useful for controlled cave-ins.

Stockpiles cannot be placed over floor grates.

Like bridges and floor hatches, floor grates will mark areas beneath them as being "inside", even if they are retracted.

If a floor grate is placed right on top of a soil floor or muddy floor it will prevent grass, shrubs and saplings from growing.

Floor grates do not block fishing or taking water directly from a water source, nor do they block collecting sand or clay, though they do prevent wells from working if between the well and the water.

Floor grates over empty space block miasma from rising through them (miasma will normally flow upward through empty space).

Bars vs. Grates
Vertical/horizontal bars seem to be functionally identical to wall/floor grates. The only notable difference between grates and bars is that grates are finished goods (which must be produced from raw materials) and have quality levels (and thus boost your fortress's architecture value significantly), while bars are simply raw materials that can be thrown into place at a moment's notice and then deconstructed later should they be needed later for other jobs.

One other important difference is that Grates can be made from stone, which is generally much more plentiful than the materials for bars.

Notes
* If you wish to remove a floor piece that is linked to a grate, make sure that the dwarf that carries out the job does not stand on the grate, or remove all grates first. The grate will not be supported, and fall (with your uncareful dwarf on it), and you will experience the famous idiom: "It's not the fall that kills you, it's the sudden stop at the end."

Bugs
* Creatures and dwarves pushed by water flow can be pushed through wall grates. 5458
