Giant olms are much larger cousins of the common olm who can be commonly found at the first and second layers of the caverns, where they prowl one at a time. These creatures are over three times heavier than dwarves and are one of the biggest banes of your fisherdwarves, emerging from the water and attacking anything smaller than themselves. Giant olms are aggressive and may deal great damage, if not outright kill unarmed civilians, and if they attack near the edge of the water, expect your dwarves to stupidly dodge into it and drown to death. They may also be seen being ridden by goblins during sieges, where they will gleefully swim over any moat you are using as a defense - whether their riders survive the trek is another story.

Giant olms are Level 1 building destroyers and will trample furniture in their path, including doors. Because they seek buildings to destroy, they can be easily lured into traps. If captured in cages, they can either be butchered for a good amount of returns or trained into valuable pets. Products made from giant olms are worth 4 times more than those made from common domestic animals.

Some dwarves like giant olms for their gills.
Giant hamsters are just the giant versions of their vermin counterparts: the hamster. They are fairly uncommon and may appear in a small group within most savage biomes. They are not hostile and will not attempt to remove the entrails of your bearded slaves. They can be caught in cage traps to be turned into pets, live trade goods, meat, bones, and leather. Despite their pet value, their products don't fetch a high price. Giant hamsters have a somewhat short life span (about 2-3 years) and are incapable of breeding, so they are unsuitable for use in a meat industry.
Although their description would imply otherwise, dingoes are not any more prone to attacking livestock than any other natural predator. They are large predators though, and will attack dwarves.
They share with pigs the key attribute of not being grazers. Thus, when tamed, wild boars can be safely stored in cages and small pastures. They can be bred as livestock for a meat industry, where they will also supply ivory for your craftsdwarves.
Kea are skittish around other creatures, so pastured livestock are generally enough to send them winging away empty-clawed. If you find that your newly founded fortress is infested with kea, a good defensive measure is to move the contents of your wagon underground as quickly as possible, using temporary stockpiles in your fortress entrance if necessary. The only scholarly explanation for this odd phenomena so far is that it may be a cruel inside joke of Armok himself .
Apparently undead versions of keas are instantly transformed into kung-fu masters at the moment of their infection, being witnessed on multiple occassions to shatter bones of dwarf sized creatures (including femurs) through bronze and steel armor with no more than a light tap from one of their toes -- as utterly improbable as it may seem for a bird their size. Kea are flying pests that like to steal valuable items. They are attracted to things like cloth, gems, metal bars, stacks of crossbow bolts, and even wheelbarrows or anvils. They may even steal fish from a barrel after interrupting the dwarf hauling it. They are similar to a raccoon or rhesus macaque, but smaller and winged; the fact that they are winged and capable of flight makes them extremely annoying if they find a way into any unoccupied areas of your fortress.

Kea are skittish around other creatures, so pastured livestock are generally enough to send them winging away empty-clawed. Unfortunately, the livestock appear to be equally scared of the pilfering pests, so your dwarves will spend considerable time herding them back into their pastures when a kea flock appears.

Kea are too small to be butchered, but may be a source of eggs if captured and trained. They can and will draw blood on dwarves and small pets, like cats. A wagon newly deployed to a fortress can be beset by a large, ravenous group of kea and have their stuff stolen and their days ruined. If you find that your newly founded fortress is infested with kea, a good defensive measure is to move the contents of your wagon underground as quickly as possible, using temporary stockpiles in your fortress entrance if necessary. This will force the pests to stop flying if they want to come and steal something, making them no more or less threatening than other thieving beasts.

Some dwarves like kea for their curiosity and their intelligence.
Morphological differences notwithstanding, rhinoceroses are essentially small elephants. On their own they are one of the largest land-based creatures in the game. Like elephants, they are found in tropical biomes often in small herds and can be tamed and trained by an animal trainer, and like elephants, once tamed they require so much grass from a pasture that it is impossible for them to avoid starvation. As a war animal, their large size and gore attacks make them an extremely fearsome threat, but they'll only survive to fulfill such a role if you mod in a more reasonable <tt>[GRAZER]</tt> value.

Combat
Rhinoceroses are dangerous animals with thick layers of skin and fat, insulating them against damage. A piercing weapon like a pike or spear works best for killing them, as non piercing weapon, such as bronze axes tend to just cut their fat without causing any serious damage quickly. They can be useful for training up skills; since they resist damage so well, you'll be able to fight them for a long time before they die.

Wrestling chokeholds can also kill them since it bypasses their layers of protection.

Rhinos usually have no problem hurting you. Their horns are very dangerous to a new adventurer.
A long, short-legged, flying insect the size of a giant cave spider, it has no direct means of attack, but like all insects it will wrestle enemies with legs and wings pretty well, even if it shouldn't be intelligent enough to do so. Also, they seem to be able to throw dwarves disproportionately long distances, sometimes resulting in a dwarf exploding when thrown. If aggressive, they are a match for a dwarf and will probably win the ensuing fight.

Thrips and giant thrips, despite being well-known agricultural pests, will do no harm to plants for now. They mostly spend their time flying high above ground in groups of five to ten, generally doing nothing useful and preventing more interesting animals from entering your map. Can be used as a food source or marksdwarf training target.
Giant grasshoppers are giant versions of the insect grasshopper. They have a size of 200,007 cm3 throughout their life cycle. They have no attacks apart from pushing and wrestling. Giant grasshoppers do not fly or jump, as they might in real life. They are tamable, with special knowledge, but they cannot be trained for war or hunting. However, since they have a maximum age of one year like most giant insects, they do not make particularly good pets.
Thread links on Main Page
Hi There - I'm relatively new to the DFwiki, and I noticed that some of the thread links on the Main Page don't work correctly. I logged in to try and edit the page, but when it wasn't an available option, I realized that it is probably restricted to administrators, given the 'please report vandalism' thing in the site announcements header.

The Team17 forums have closed, so the Team17 link is a dead one.
The SomethingAwful.com forums link is behind a login wall, so I'm not sure if you would want to remove this as well? I believe that they do occasionally rotate forums (such as Games) to be available to non-logged in users though, so it would perhaps be available intermittently.

The black mamba is a very small species of poisonous snake. What distinguishes it most from other such creatures is the virulence of is venom, with short-term symptoms including dizziness, drowsiness, strong pain, fever, unconsciousness, and complete paralysis, in ascending order to the size of the creature bit. For a small creature like a dwarf, a single bite is enough to kill a dwarf within seconds, as paralysis of the diaphragm leads to suffocation.

They are solitary creatures that normally flee contact, but have a <tt>[PRONE_TO_RAGE:1]</tt> tag in their creature definitions, which means that about 1% of the time they will flip out on anyone they see. Mamba fangs are too small to pierce normal clothing reliably, but with some luck they can thereafter cause some real damage to your fortress. Overall, you're probably better avoiding them outright, unless you want them for their prolific egg-laying habits.
