==Melek - Year 201==

This is the stuff of legends! Me a humble woodcutter one of the few to make the trip to forge a new mountain home!

'''Journey Day 1'''

There are 6 others on the trip, they seem amiable folk. The wagons are filled with all sorts of goods... ENDLESS barrels of food and drink, enough for over a year! I'm not even sure how this many barrels could be fit into one wagon but somehow it was done.

'''Journey Day 4'''

I've made some fast friends already, and we're making excellent progress. Perhaps I should have looked to see where in the world we are to settle but this is too great to have second thoughts at the last minute!

Our number include a skilled mason, two sturdy miners who are clearly the muscle of any dwarf city! A planter who I will help with the farming when needed as I know a little of farming. A carpenter and a mechanic.

[[File:melek_arctichell_1a.jpg]]

'''Journey Day 17'''

We've been heading north for so long it's starting to get cooler. No matter, we must press on.

'''Journey Day ??'''

I've lost track of the endless days, we make camp for the night and just as I think we've arrived we move on.

'''Journey Day ???'''

We've reached a vast Glacier and our leader has chosen to go straight through. Surely we could go around! We've traveled for so many days what would a few more matter?

'''Journey Day ???'''

We've stopped and started unloading. All I can see through the blizzard is ice and snow. I hear the distant sound of creatures lurking beyond the storm. Our miners have started to dig down into the ice... our leader has ordered the barrels unloaded and placed near the slope the miners are digging.

[[File:melek_arctichell_1b.jpg]]

We must be having a brief rest! Yes, that's it. We're just going to have a couple of days rest underground while we recoup our strength. Yes.

[[File:melek_arctichell_1c.jpg]]

'''Day 1'''

This is not a break. This is not a brief stop to recoup. This is my worst nightmare. I am a woodcutter, like my father and his father before him. I live for trees! Some dwarves make fun of me and call be an elf for liking trees... but it's a core of my being! There are NO FUCKING TREES HERE!

'''Day 9'''

It doesn't take long for our miners to dig out the halls and rooms we need to settle down. I feel left out of the entire thing. There is no water, no farming, no live stock but our ''leader'' has ''the plan''. No one knows what this ''plan'' is though.

So I just haul things around, stone to the mason, wood to the wood burner, a door in this doorway... I hate my life.

'''Day 28'''

Strange things are being built. Giant corkscrews, metal pipes, so many mechanisms... I heard the miners talking about a huge room they've dug out with many flood gates leading out of it controlled by levers... I must find it...

'''Day 35'''

I found the strange room, the flood gates are all controlled by many levers but beyond each there is a bare stone wall! Surely this is total madness! The work that went into this could have been spent doing something... like growing trees... or something... oh, my head...

[[File:melek_arctichell_1d.jpg]]

'''Day 62'''

The miners are excited, they've found a vein of iron ore... maybe they could have found a vast underground forest or something... now THAT would be useful.

[[File:melek_arctichell_1e.jpg]]

'''Day 89'''

I found the carpenter crying today, ''the plan'' means we have to keep what wood we have left for making charcoal for something... I'm not sure what they are making but this lack of wood really affects the carpenter... crazy fool... it's only a bit of wood, such a big sissy.

'''Day ???'''

They are making strange things, giant corkscrews, iron pipes... so many mechanisms. What ever this ''plan'' is it better involve finding trees. Oh my god I miss them... so cold... so hungry, the food is running low.

'''Day ???'''

Traders have arrived and for a collection of master piece mechanisms we've replenished our food and drink supplies... but I still cannot see any hope for us. Winter is closing in and I don't think I can take it any more.

[[File:melek_arctichell_1f.jpg]]

'''Day 200+'''

I've found some written diagrams for this ''plan''. It involves bringing magma to a small room which will then be pumped into two chambers. These will then melt the ice which will fill the room with all the floodgates! It's madness! All this to see if you can melt ice with magma! We're all going to die!

[[File:melek_arctichell_1g.jpg]]

[[File:melek_arctichell_1h.jpg]]

'''Day ???'''

The miners have found a magma pipe, the leader is especially excited and for once managed to do something right. They tapped the magma without anyone burning to death! The magma is now flowing towards the small chamber ready to be pumped to melt the ice... so thirsty... I hope it moves faster soon...

[[File:melek_arctichell_1i.jpg]]

'''Year 201'''

Sorry I didn't quite manage to get the ice melter working... but the magma is one it's way and it'll be in action by mid/late spring I imagine. We need some farm plots urgently for when the water arrives. The well is ready... just need that magma to get where it's going!! Argh!

I've not left the fortress in a good state for Frewfrux but it was never going to be an easy first 2 years! lol.
I've not left the fortress in a good state for Frewfrux but it was never going to be an easy first 2 years! lol.
There are 6 others on the trip, they seem amiable folk. The wagons are filled with all sorts of goods... ENDLESS barrels of food and drink, enough for over a year! I'm not even sure how this many barrels could be fit into one wagon but somehow it was been done.

We've reached a vast Glacier and our leader has chosen to go straight through. Surely we could go around! We've travelled for so many days what would a few more matter?

'''Trip Day ??? '''

We've stopped and started unloading. All I can see through the blizzard is ice and snow. I hear the distant sound of creatures lurking beyond the storm. Our miners have started to dig down into the ice... our leader has ordered the barrels unloaded and placed near the slope the miners are digging.

[[File:melek_arctichellhole_year1b.png]]
=Creating A Game=
:Creating a game could be complicated due to the Wiki's code. Fortunately, you can just use this Template, as long as you don't change any punctuation. Add all you want in the designated areas. Copy it, open the editor for the section you want to add it to, paste it, then fill it in. Be sure to place it in the appropriate section. Alternately, you can ask [[User:The Architect|The Architect]] to do it, just tell him what you want.<br />

==Template==
<nowiki>{{SLG</nowiki>

<nowiki>|FortName=your fort name</nowiki>

<nowiki>|Host=~~~ (3 tildes, not 4!)</nowiki>

<nowiki>|WikiLink=Title of the Wiki Page (no Bloodline: prefix needed, optional)</nowiki>

<nowiki>|ForumLink=Full forum link address (ie http://www.bay12games.com/forum/)</nowiki>

<nowiki>|Description=Your game description.</nowiki>

<nowiki>}}</nowiki>

The Wiki doesn't serve as a good forum, so discussing the choice of your fort location is better done elsewhere(people will want to discuss it with you and find the Edit-to-type and coding is a barrier. However, if you like, you can go ahead and create a game page under your GameName, and work from there to pick your site. The Wiki IS a great place to post updates, once you know how.

It will look like this:<br />
{{SLG
|FortName=Example
|Host=[[User:Briess|Briess]]
|WikiLink=Example
|ForumLink=http://www.bay12games.com/forum
|Description=Example}}

Please be sure to place this under a section that will help players find it. Ongoing games go in Active, games that have not begun go in Inactive.
(After doing this, and saving your edit, click on the link that appears to go to your fort's new page, and edit away! As simple or as fancy as you like, describe the rules and what you want to do, then start taking applications.)

I am interested in both, though my preference would be the
arctic winter one.

I do have a question, which you may or may not be able to answer, will
there be more then just a glacier biome? If not, that's fine. It would
just be very difficult (!!!) to do any farming in a map with just glaciers
all around. Though it is not impossible, just difficult. Depends partly
on if there's a way to get water. Like melting ice with magma. But I
know you don't want to give too much away, so I'm just wondering if It
would be ALL glacier or not.

-- [[User:Frewfrux|Frewfrux]]

:Well, I've not decided completely yet. I might have a small section of some other biome... or I might just have it all glacier with only a magma pool no magma pipe... lol!

:Either way, I may have the hardest job of getting it going in the first year... we shall see how talks with other hopefuls go. One thing to be sure, it'll be an evil area with as much "fun" as I can fit in! ;-)

:If even I can survive the first year then I expect it'll all be fine. ;-)

:-- [[User:Melek|Melek]]

::I've tried this setting before. The biggest "problem" is that creatures of any kind don't enter glacier biomes as a general rule. Those that do are few and far between. The biggest challenge is not the creatures, but survival.

::The "easiest" way to survive is to take advantage of the fact that the floor immediately above the first rock layer turns to arable soil if you build and then destroy the building. However, that is considered by most to be a form of cheating, so I'm guessing that's out of the question.

::Bringing ice down to melt does, technically, produce water...but it's not usable water. It's very weird water. Anyway, I've found that the only ways it's possible to survive is by either:

::A) having a source of water from another biome (long trips if it's off in the corner somewhere),
::B) having magma to melt ice with (I haven't tested that out yet), or
::C) bringing enough food and drink to get through 2 years which will allow you to 1) put in a request for loads of food and drink from traders (first year) and getting to the point when they come back with it (2nd year).

::Once the traders have established that pretty much all you're interested in is food and drink, it's a bit easier from there. The biggest challenge is getting there.

::Of course, if you can manage to generate a map where the traders won't visit due to the location being isolated...

::-- [[User:Frewfrux|Frewfrux]]

:::Well, it's all good stuff to keep in mind. I've generated the world it'll take place in... its cold and nasty... perfect!

:::If you frequent and decent forums feel free to let people know about the game and direct them to the Wiki pages.

:::-- [[User:Melek|Melek]]

::::You should put a link to the wiki article about ice in your game description and a note that everyone should read up on it prior to playing this game. Players should really have at least a little bit of an idea what they're getting themselves into here.

::::Ah, tundra. That's a great way to get critters to show up. (As opposed to 100% glacier)

::::Normally I play the graphical version of this game. It will be interesting to play the "real" version. I think I should get some practice so that I know what the different symbols mean.

::::Are we going to be re-naming dwarves to be our characters?

::::-- [[User:Frewfrux|Frewfrux]]

:::::I've found that wolves and blizzard men seem to turn up on 100% glacier... at least the ones I've played.

:::::I love the ASCII version. Makes me feel all nostalgic. ;-)

:::::Yeah, when you start your turn you can rename a dwarf to yourself and see how it goes from there.

:::::-- [[User:Melek|Melek]]

::::::I had one map that was mostly glacier with a corner as tundra and another corner as a different biome of tundra then the first. I did get blizzard men on that map, but not very often.

::::::(As a side note, I understand the nostalgia for ASCII. I'm actually in the middle of the beginings of programming my own rouge-like.)

::::::-- [[User:Frewfrux|Frewfrux]]

:::::::I'd love to have the drive to start doing some programming at home... something like a Wurm Online/Dwarf Fortress cross. But after a hard day at work programming there I very rarely feel in the mood once I get back... ;-(

::::Ah, tundra. That's a great way to get critters to show up. (As opposed to 100% glacier)

::::::I had one map that was mostly glacier with a corner as tundra and another corner as a different biome of tundra then the first. I did get blizzard men on that map, but not very often.
(mostly copied from [[User talk:senso]])

A string manipulation extension would allow things to be dynamically created from raw files and other powerful templates. With the upcoming big change to creature structure in DF, something that pulls info directly from raw data would really help rework the creature pages. I've been looking through some extensions, and one of these would fit well (in order of preference)
#http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:MultiReplace
#http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:RegexParserFunctions
#http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:StringFunctions
The first one is a replacement function that can preform multiple replacements in one call (and it supports regex). The second one is a straightforward regex engine, and the last one is a collection of string manipulations. For my suggested purpose just one of the three would be enough, but none of them completely covers the tasks the of others. So, if possible, having all of them would be best. [[User:VengefulDonut|VengefulDonut]] 21:35, 15 September 2009 (UTC)

:Their functionality does overlap a lot. The differences are as follows:
*Multireplace can preform multiple replacements with one call, which the second one cannot. It can evaluate regular expressions for the replacement.
*RegexParserFunctions can preform a regex replacement. It can also be used for a regex search, which multireplace isn't meant for.
:Multireplace would be better suited for a template that generates diagrams. Regexparserfunctions could do this by nesting the function call many times, which I don't think is a good idea.
:Regexparserfunctions would be better suited for a template that pulls information from raw data files. Multireplace could do this by matching everything before and after the matchtext and cropping it, like so: '''(.*)(matchtext)(.*)=$2'''. However, to do this multireplace is effectively matching the entire page at once. [[User:VengefulDonut|VengefulDonut]] 22:50, 15 September 2009 (UTC)
== Short delay for new accounts? ==

Some wikis have a policy of a short waiting period between the creation of a new user account and the ability to edit an article. (On the main wiki, I believe this is 30 days.) This delay achieves 3 things, but the only one I'm really concerned with is that it would ''seriously'' slow down bots and spammers. As a side benefit, it also prevents confused newbies from editing before they have a feel for the wiki as a whole, and spontaneous, ill-considered or mean-spirited contributions from a variety of other less-than-serious sources, such as the occasional spur-of-the-moment vandal or the late-Saturday-night beer-goggled comedy writing team. I think 1 week would be ample, but even a 48 or 72 hour period might slow the spam bots. No editor who has a worthwhile contribution to make would resent 48 hours to consider their first effort.

Just a thought.--[[User:Albedo|Albedo]] 02:09, 18 September 2009 (UTC)
Okay, that must have been it - I had no notification that it wouldn't accept my edit, so... <br />
Otoh, I, for one, do have a problem when a page gets edited by [[24.198.25.175]] - how do I respond on their talk page? More, don't some smaller ISP's still share IP numbers between users over time in the same area? So... who, exactly, made that edit? Everyone with that ISP? Lastly, when keeping getting a feel for who is editing what, and their style, hard to mentally keep casual track of an IP addy. Just one vote, but in this case, it's one of dissent.--[[User:Albedo|Albedo]] 18:30, 27 September 2009 (UTC)
:Well, you da boss. You may want to make a general announcement, perhaps on the "current events" page? It's rather jarring to see IP's instead of user:names, and I would never have guessed that their :talk page would work - might want to mention that, too, for all the other ignorants out there. (Also, if I never "don't log in" again, I'll never see any response to the one IP edit I did make, right? 2 user pages for each editor w/ a user:name? And even more if they (don't) log in from different locations/IP's? hrmmm...)--[[User:Albedo|Albedo]] 08:42, 28 September 2009 (UTC)
== Deletion Policy ==

Redirects serve two purposes - links from other articles, and Searches. These fit under neither category, or none that also fit other policies (like singular/plural article names). And a lot depends on what links to them - since most of these were orphans (or effectively so, any reference only being a conversation re deletion) what are the odds of a search? <br />
Re plurals - I guess on one hand once they're there, they might as well stay, but they do set a bad precedent, and they are serving no good purpose except as an undesirable crutch. <br />
As far as "bizmuth bronze", that's a terrible precedent imo - do we start allowing any and every misspelled word to be "redirected"? If it's regional (armour/armor) or a common confusion (adamantium/adamantine) I support it 100%, but misspellings? Bleh. Remind me to make a redirect page for the metals iorn and steal, and sliver and goaled, among others. Double bleh.<br />
[[Personality modding]] was someone's pet project that was never started beyond posting the (almost blank) page, and abandoned and forgotten by late '07, not updated until [[user:I2amroy]] copied/pasted the entirety of the personality page onto it without further comment. It had no links except on 2 user pages, one where we were recently wondering "WTF ''IS'' this?", and another that's listed under "old forum links". Since the page itself was 2 years old, and has nothing that the original didn't... I think it's another that could get trimmed without loss, as the odds of anyone typing in "personality modding" are slim to none.<br />
Nah - I'm opinionated and vocal, but that's not the same as being always adamant in that opinion nor believing that means that I'm "right" (nor always spoiling for an argument/fight, some evidence to the contrary). I've voiced my point and the reasons behind it, and I believe you've weighed that (Respect) - so if in your estimation it doesn't wash, that's all good by me. == Quote page - Karl's recent deletion constitutes vandalism ==
Karl is continually removing any and every quote I add to the quote page while leaving alone anything added by anyone else. Ie, he's clearly attacking me rather than trying to improve the quote page. This behavior is strikingly aberrant especially because he seems to be in favor of keeping any other quote no matter how bad.

I've acted in good faith to improve the quote page, and am trying to participate in a dialog about the other deleted quotes which I honestly don't feel belong on the page on their own merits. He's judging quotes i've added solely on the basis that I added them. He's also deleted other quotes i've added previously, and appends his recent changes summary with smilie faces as if he thinks he's being funny. This amounts to vandalism pure and simple. Needless to say, this is unacceptable behavior.
The quote I removed was based on the way you remove them, they were not grade-A funny quote. A taste of your own Medicine. You judge quote based on your biased opinion, saying they need to be funny, which is not the case, it's written nowhere on the wiki. You try to impose your own twisted sense of humor on this wiki. The fact no one cares about the quote make it hard to add them back, even if me and corona wanted to have some back, you opposed your veto, saying it was hardly a consensus.

You are by the way really condescending vs me and corona, talking about whining and all, did it ever occur to you that humor might be a personal taste ?

Oh, and by the way, it's unnecessary to copy/paste your rant on multiple page. --[[User:Karl|Karl]] 16:44, 5 November 2009 (UTC)

:As much as i hate to have a discussion with you on someone else's talk page
:First, the discussions, while on related issues, served different purposes. Namely a referendum on the quotes talk page on those quotes versus talking with an administrator about the appropriateness of particular editing behavior.
:Second, you're applying a different standard to quotes I've added than to other quotes on that page, which means you're targetting them because I've added them. Ie, exactly what I've said above. I doubt anything which I add you would ever consider grade-A funny, solely because i've added it.
:Third, they certainly aren't quotes crafted by me - i've merely noticed them and decided they should be added. They deserve to be judged on their own merits. You're not hurting me by removing them because I added them, you're hurting the page, and you're penalizing the people whose material it was originally.
== Number of regex evaluations allowed per page ==

The number-of-functions-per-page parameter in the regex parser functions extension defaults to 10. Limiting it to a small number isn't warranted since computation time is based more on the complexity of the expressions involved rather than the quantity. A higher limit would allow [[template:diagram]] to be used more than three times on a single page. I've compared the serve time of these two pages: [[User:VengefulDonut/g|a]] [[User:VengefulDonut/r|b]], and found the difference was usually about 0.003 seconds. Based on this, I don't think its use is dangerous. [[User:VengefulDonut|VengefulDonut]] 17:38, 10 November 2009 (UTC)

::When you were testing [[template:diagram]], the limit you bumped into was the post-expand include size limit for templates. Templates are not allowed to generate more than 2MB of data on a single page. Since trying to display 2MB of data in one article is a bad idea anyway, this limit is very reasonable. If you want to see the include size, serve time, and other properties of an article, they get added as comments the page's html source when served. I'm one of the people working on the [http://www.bay12games.com/forum/index.php?topic=46472.0 Ark Project], a collaborative DF mod. So far we've been using a [[User_talk:Lancensis|user talk page]] on the DF wiki for planning purposes, but we were thinking it'd be nice if there were a [http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:Using_custom_namespaces custom namespace] called "Mod" on the wiki. This would also help clean up the problem with [[:Category:Mods|mod pages in the Main namespace.]]

As an aside, it might also be helpful to have a "Utility" namespace for [[Utilities|utilities]], which are in the same boat as mods.

I noticed the DF wiki already has custom namespaces for bloodline games, so hopefully this isn't too much to ask. Thanks!
One thing though: the new namespaces don't seem to have [http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Help:Subpages subpages] enabled, and a lot of the people currently hosting mods on their talk pages are using subpages. I know people can switch to using categories instead (we may do this), but it's something to consider. Also, this is pure irrelevant nitpicking, but namespace names usually use the singular.
== Can I have admin rights? ==

Hey. I'm working on developing wiki pages for the new version of DF. These pages are listed [[:Category:Dwarf_Fortress_2010|here]]. There is a lot to do for this and most people probably won't be too interested for a couple weeks after release. I'm hoping to have something in place for structure, and also for new users before release. In doing so I'm trying to rearrange some of the pages I've made and make them more useful. I've done a few moves but I'm going to have a lot of move over redirects to do at some point and I need admin rights to make sure I clean up the mess I make. I've been admin on a dozen or so wikis, and effectively ran [http://spore.wikia.com/wiki/SporeWiki sporewiki] for months myself. If you give me admin rights you can feel free to monitor all my actions to make sure everything is kosher. I just hate having to bother someone else to fix tiny things. Thanks! [[User:Mason11987|Mason11987]] 17:11, 31 January 2010 (UTC)
:Just as a side comment, it's usually been my observation (from many different places) that directly asking for admin rights is a really good way to ensure that the answer will be "no", especially for somebody who only registered on the wiki 1 week ago, but that's just me. --[[User:Quietust|Quietust]] 21:32, 31 January 2010 (UTC)
::I suppose on a forum or site where admin matters, but on wikis my experience is that if people have a reasonable use for the tools and don't look like they intend to screw anything up, then who cares? But then again, that's only because everything is able to be undone so it's a zero risk situation. I don't know why people would want to make a wiki and then restrict people who seem helpful from editing it easily, kinda counter-productive imo. :::I think Admin is the wrong word. These kinds of people are janitors or managers or something. Admins are people who also manage users, sometime you don't want a person to have access to. --[[User:Iban|Iban]] 03:16, 1 February 2010 (UTC)
::::Depends what environment you are familiar with. On Mediawiki-based wikis (Wikipedia for example) the phrase "Admin" often refers to the user group that has a few powers like deleting pages, blocking users, protecting pages, editing system messages, because these are the default for the sysop group. I really only have a desire to use the deleting pages power, but there is a lot of opportunity to work on the system messages here as well. I posted this hear because even though the average person doesn't know that admin = person with a couple extra powers on a wiki, I assumed Briess (who is a bureaucrat) would know. Admin is in Media-Wiki terminology correct, the person who manages users is a bureaucrat on wikis. [[User:Mason11987|Mason11987]] 06:05, 1 February 2010 (UTC)
::::::Well I don't see any reason why it's problematic to just hit the button on the user rights page. Just because some people seem to think that admin on a wiki should be like a reward system instead of a set of tools doesn't mean that's the right thing to do. Especially when the two bureaucrats aren't even on here most days (or so it seems). [[User:Mason11987|Mason11987]] 08:25, 1 February 2010 (UTC)
I've been thinking that it would be nice to add some photos to the wiki, such as of trees, stones and animals, for example. Wikimedia commons would make an excellent source, since from what I gather the whole point of it is that the images are meant to be freely reused. However, apparently third party wikis such as this one can link to commons directly, if it's enabled. (see http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:$wgForeignFileRepos and http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:$wgUseInstantCommons) So is there any chance we could get that enabled?

== Deletion Policy ==

So my position is "Lose 'em all, no one will ever miss them, and it's a cleaner site without" - but that's my opinion - the final policy is up to you.--[[User:Albedo|Albedo]] 18:19, 20 October 2009 (UTC)
.... Er, I really meant if you still disagree, I'm more than willing to continue discussing what<br /> the appropriate course of action should be over any editorial policies we may have on this wiki.
(In this case.) ;) The policies are a collaboration as much as the content itself, and we've held to that process.

Thanks!

Thanks a ton! This'll be really helpful.
== Can I have admin rights? ==

[[User:Mason11987|Mason11987]] 03:01, 1 February 2010 (UTC)
:::::Wouldn't it be less problematic to just create Category:Deletion_requests or something? Oh, we already have that at [[:Category:Deletion]]. I don't know if Briess knows about it though. --[[User:Footkerchief|Footkerchief]] 06:17, 1 February 2010 (UTC)
:::::::I'm not inclined to make a decision about this just yet, give me a day or two to mull over it. If you want to continue discussing this, please do by all means. Also, I am aware of the deletion request page, and actually pruned it this last week. :) --[[User:Briess|Briess]] 10:36, 1 February 2010 (UTC)
::::::::Sounds good, just remember that all sysop actions are revertible as well, as well as the decision to make someone a sysop.
I'm not sure if this applies to fortifications that don't touch walls such as ones in aboveground archery towers or long carved walls. --[[User:Someone-else|Someone-else]] 19:33, 19 April 2008 (EDT)
:Yes, it works great. I think they can shoot down more than 1 z-level but I can't confirm this.[[User:Moonman|Moonman]] 10:47, 11 March 2008 (EDT)
::iirc, they CAN shoot back, they just cant hit well. if you are next to the fortification you are shooting through theres no penalty. trying to shoot through from more than 1 square away is a skill check. if the fortification is up a z-level, the dwarf on the inside will still be next to the fortification, but the enemy can never be, so must alway shoot at a penalty. --[[User:Chariot|Chariot]] 15:33, 11 March 2008 (EDT)
::I've had goblins shooting back at my fortifications one z-level above and regular crossbowmen have difficulty, but elite goblin crossbowmen can hit and kill in one shot. However, three z-levels above and there's little to no return fire, and my dwarves seem to have better range firing down too (but I can't confirm this for sure). Seems like you could set up two or three identical archery targets with fortifications at different distances, and look for busted ammunition near the fortifications. you could try building a row of bars or grants in front of and possibly spaced between the fortifications and the Dwarfs. or just two rows of fortifications one they go up to and one between the targets to test.

==Prevention of ambushes==
I assume from personal experience that the law of range with z-level is that for every z-level you go up, the dwarf will get +1 range but at the same time will get a blind spot of +1 from the dwarf. Now the interesting is that if you have marksdwarfs (I am not sure if normal marksdwarfs will work, but it appears elites and champs work for this) on a z-level such that their range extends over the map screen, then ambushes will not appear in this area. I do not know if this holds true if the dwarfs aren't behind fortifications, but if they are it seems this works through repeats of the same save - ambushes would only appear on parts of the edges not covered in the range of marksdwarfs. However, at the same time my dwarfs won't shoot any goblins that show up because their shooting range is beyond. Anyone else want to test this or have done this? For reference, my marksdwarfs are 12 z-levels up from ground and are 13 tiles from the edge on a side. --[[User:Breakfight|Breakfight]]
:Well, that would make sense if the game requires ambush units to appear on the map hidden at start. Anyone care to fill the map edge with chained guard dogs? --[[User:Höhlenschreck|Höhlenschreck]] 12:01, 8 June 2009 (UTC)
::On the forums veterans have stated that the reverse is true - altitude hurts your range. Effective range on a crossbow should be about 20 tiles, so 12 up and 13 out might be about right. (A bolt will travel further, but marksdwarves don't tend to open fire until targets are about 20 away.)
::It might also be closer to "restricted traffic" than a "will not appear" situation - the gobbos might naturally just avoid arriving near any dwarfs (with or without crossbows) if they have other options, but if you ringed your map with them they'd still show up ''somewhere''. :Thank you for the tentative support. Considering that this wiki does not function as a forum, I'm not sure of the appropriate mode for response, but I hope you see this. Support so far has been quick, with 9 joining in two days, but I expect the growth to pan out around 20 and move slowly until the point that it becomes a topic of discussion and moves to be well known, when it should become a major part of the DF community. If you have the time please drop by in a few days when the interface is smoothed over and give me your opinion; learning the wiki coding is making things a little sluggish. Also, some of the functions will of course take place outside the wiki in order to reduce the amount of info clogging up space here. --[[User:The Architect|The Architect]] 10:40, 8 October 2009 (UTC)
::Not a problem. Of course, wiki syntax is a bit of a hassle - I can't claim I have any real understanding of it myself either. :::It seems you made a reply while I was editing. typed more as follows: By the way, wouldn't keeping it separate now or placing it under a category with Bloodline (but not under Bloodline, seeing as those games are only one facet) such as "Multiplayer" or "Succession" prevent hassle later on? Within a few days this is likely to generate multiple extra pages as we begin games and will continue to do so as long as it exists.
:::A separate application would be great; I don't have the knowhow but some of the functions (such as ratings) would benefit from an automated program to turn the raw data to tables, and asking a large number of players to learn the wiki interface in order to arrange games with each other nearly defeats the purpose of this group for the casual player. I don't want to force you to keep moving the pages I'm making (only a couple more), so if you intend to stick it under Bloodline for now then maybe you can give me a link that will teach me to do it myself? (I get the redirect, but not creating a page under the Category)
== cages & releasing ==

For unknown reason(s), releasing a creature from a built cage (the only kind <br />you can intentionally release them from) requires an accessible empty, unbuilt cage...

I think you're wrong, and I ''know'' a dealbreaker like this should have been posted for discussion ''before'' editing it into the article. See [[Talk:Cage#releasing_creatures]]. --[[User:Albedo|Albedo]] 01:35, 14 October 2009 (UTC)

:You are right, the discussion should have been my first step. I was pretty hasty, seeing how utterly incomplete the Cage page was, and failed to follow proper procedure. It's possible that I am misinterpreting the cause of the error, but I had no mods on at the time (including default init.txt), and the situation was exactly as I described it: "Zulban Ashmonkibuk, Engineer cancels Release Large Creature: need empty cage (x46)", which I used the o-menu to ignore until a new cage was completed. Before that, "Ilrod Kolol, Armorer cancels Release Large Creature: need empty cage (x60)", when transferring animals. This specifically happened with animals that had been tamed while in cages and untamed animals, and not animals purchased tame. This could lead back to the root of the newly-tamed and untamed animal trading bug. It seems real, designated "pets", aka purchased creatures, along with embarkation animals and bred animals, are handled separately at some point from creatures caught by cage traps, causing these bugs. I made a serious mistake in not noting that on the discussion page.

:Confirmation for all of the bugs/caveats added there can be found in a file I have, if you would like it. It was one of my earlier forts, and when I discovered that the Cage page lacked many important bits of information (such as the labor for moving untamed animals by job assignment!) I felt the need to update it. The other major bug, where multiple animals being assigned to a cage at one time are all designated for release immediately, and only designated to be moved to the cage one at a time, does in fact result in exactly the results posted: the creatures are released, and become free, but remain in the stock menu, assign to cage/restraint menu, and u/Creatures menu as long as they live. Forgive me for not using the button modifier for u on this talk page, but I haven't memorized it yet. The resulting errors for performing actions with them are as follows: "Dwarf cancels Large Creature Caging: Interrupted by Cave Swallowman." (Civilian chasing freed creature and attempting to cage it) "Dwarf Cancels Small Creature Caging: Nothing to cage." (Escaped Vermin)

:As far as my failure to follow protocol, all I can do is offer an apology and not repeat the mistake. I'm sorry. --[[User:The Architect|The Architect]] 01:58, 14 October 2009 (UTC)

Also, I'd love to know why you think artifact value doesn't involve skill...

--[[User:Squirrelloid|Squirrelloid]] 08:30, 21 October 2009 (UTC)
:Yea, I'll add you with the next update. Got a bit on my plate at the moment, and it takes roughly 2 hours depending on how big the update is because of the wiki format. The thing isn't that artifact value can't be influenced by skillful forbidding/dumping, stockpile placement, and so forth, but that the number and type of artifact is largely random. If we are awarding someone for their ability to build an economy, then ignoring artifacts allows a more careful measurement of a player's skill in that regard.
:Due to the game being an alpha and the economics of some of the newer elements being highly unbalanced, the economic competition may be removed or altered for the next game. For instance: food and adamantine economies are on a whole other level from any other kind, and no one can hope to compete with them. --[[User:The Architect|The Architect]] 00:24, 22 October 2009 (UTC)

::Actually, you can encourage particular classes of artifacts by biasing your mood pool. Dwarves without moodable skills can be given one with a single job, so there's no excuse for your non-mood skill dwarves to not dabble in something valuable like armor forging. And many mood skills also increase the odds of that particular dwarf having a mood at all. Sure, it requires making sacrifices (Assigning lots of miners increases the odds of generating poor artifacts since their mood is nothing to speak of), but the payout is in a much higher frequency of valuable moods, and if you play your cards right, valuable artifacts. (I've had fortresses where 70% of the dwarves who could still get a mood would generate a metal-working mood of some sort - this is a totally plausible way to plan on building your economy). --[[User:Squirrelloid|Squirrelloid]] 07:11, 22 October 2009 (UTC)
:::That's interesting. I have no such thing as a hauler in my fortresses, in fact. Most non-legendary dwarfs do some form of hauling eventually, based on their industry. But in any case: the wiki states that giving your dwarfs mood-able skills just puts them into the pool for selection when a mood comes along, and that the number of moods is not affected by skills. So yes, you could weight your pool by having peasants all gain a useful-artifact school (weaponsmithing, etc). That makes sense. But the current consensus seems to be that the number of moods is affected by wealth, created objects and revealed subterranean squares. If you have an alternate theory it should be shared. In any case, moods are too much of a random factor to be counted in an economic contest. As much as possible, limiting random factors makes for better competition. I'm sure influencing artifacts isn't the only thing you know how to do. --[[User:The Architect|The Architect]] 02:00, 23 October 2009 (UTC)
::::Number of moods is effected by subterranean tiles revealed and items created (raw wealth has no effect most of the time, see later), but the numbers are low enough that 2 miners working continuously is more than sufficient to never 'miss' a mood. Similarly, its only 200 items/artifact - a number that is trivial to hit. Now, exactly when you get a mood is poisson distributed, which means there's going to be some variance in how many you get in n years, but its probably K+-1, which means the number of artifacts is less variable than the quality of the mood based on *which* skills are used for moods (something you can bias) and the value of the ingredients used (something you can bias). The other variable is you need some minimum number of dwarves (20 iirc) before you *can* get a mood, which means rapid wealth acquisition year 1 can increase the number of moods you get (by ~1) by getting enough immigrants in the fall to start the mood count-down a season or so early. Basically, most of the variables involved with moods are biasable by a clever player.
::::Not that I *need* to count my artifacts, but, well, it'd be a shame to eject millions of dwarfbucks of value because its tied up in artifacts =)
Very interested in joining. I'm familiar with Dwarf Fortress, on a PC with Vista. Nothing much else on my mind to ask/say! --[[User:Rogabeetah|Rogabeetah]] 12:44, 12 October 2009 (UTC) (now registered as "Rogabeetah" on the forums *15 October 2009*)
I too find an opportunity to participate enthralling. I play dwarf fortress a good bit and am pretty skilled at managing dem dorfs. I'm not gonna be a jerk and run the fort into the ground and leave you with one engraver in the fort's lowest level with nothing to do but engrave until he drowns either. --[[User:Qcrane|Qcrane]] 8:22. 12 October 2009 (UTC)(not registered on the forums)
You will all be added promptly, and if you need an email let me know. Also let me know what kind of games you want to see and if you need help starting them.
I'm interested in joining. I posted on the forums under the same name. I'm somewhat new to DF (I've been at it for about a month) but I'm ready to try a few succession games.
I think I'd like to get in on this. My school work kinda waxes and wanes, so I should be around at least a decent amount of time. I go by Vicas on Bay12 and that works or here, too. I'm familiar with DF (been playing since the 2D version) but I'm very rusty, since I haven't played in a little under a year. - Vicas
This sounds awesome and I would like to join. I've played DF quite a bit and at least know how not to cause a fortress to die immediately. I would be interested in pretty much any sort of game. --[[User:Hyperbox|Hyperbox]] 21:59, 4 November 2009 (UTC)
Ever since I read the legendary tales of Boatmurdered and Nist Akath (even though Nist Akath wasn't a succession game) I've wanted to try this. Count on me, I know what it takes to get a fort up and running smoothly and in good order. Please sign me up!
