'''Libraries''' are a [[location]]. At a library, [[scribe]]s can copy [[book]]s/[[scroll]]s and [[scholar]]s can write them. Dwarves (even those who are not assigned to the library) will sometimes come to read books or idle around.

Scholars of various races will visit your library, often bringing books of their own. Occasionally they will take your books with them when they leave. They may also write their own books while visiting (using your supply of writing material in the process). These books effectively become property of your fortress, as the author usually doesn't take their books away upon leaving.

'''Books''' are a type of item. They are written in by players in [[adventurer mode]] and by citizens or visiting scholars in [[fortress mode]].

Books are created in the [[craftsdwarf's workshop]] out of a written-on [[quire]], [[thread]], and a [[book binding]].

Book bindings can be made from [[log]]s, [[stone]]s, or metal [[bar]]s. Book bindings can be made at either [[craftsdwarf's workshop]] or [[metalsmith's forge]].

Books are stored in [[libraries]] (specifically [[bookcase]]s).

Written books can be found under "codices" in the {{k|z}} Stocks screen and in the {{k|L}} Artifacts screen.

One must be a [[Reader]] of at least Novice skill in order to read a book.

=== Necromancy ===
Necromancy books cannot normally be created by players either in [[adventurer mode]] or [[fortress mode]], but will be written during world generation by necromancers and various demonic rulers.

Books on necromancy are found sitting on [[table]]s in the tower or keep of the entity that wrote them.

If a [[Necromancer]] visits your fortress he may bring books with him. Books with secrets in them are considered [[artifact]]s; they will appear on your fortress's [[Artifact]]s list and may be stored in stockpiles that allow artifact-quality finished goods.

Some books may contain "secrets of life and death", which when read by an adventurer will make him a [[necromancer]], immune to death from age and able to raise zombies.

Art books describe [[poetic forms]], [[dance forms]] and [[musical forms]].

Scholarly books include [[topic]]s on mathematics, philosophy, history, geography, medical science, natural science, astronomy, engineering, and chemistry.

Within each topic there are "[[knowledge]] branches".

[[Civilization]]s practice different forms of scholarship. Dwarves practice all forms of scholarship (while still preferring craftsdwarfship to books), elves do elfy stuff, and for humans it is randomized for each instance of civilization (scholar types are based on the civilization's values and jobs).

Books may be autobiographies, or about other historical characters or locations the author has had contact with. Books may also be commentaries on other books.

A '''screw press''' is a special workshop used to press liquids out of various substances. Currently, this consists of pressing [[seed]] pastes or fruit ([[olive]]s) to yield [[oil]] (which can then be made into [[soap]] or cooked) and [[press cake]] (which can be cooked), and pressing honeycombs to yield [[honey]] (which can then be brewed into mead) and wax cake (which can be made into wax crafts). Each pressing job requires an empty [[jug]] to hold the oil or honey.

[[Slurry]] may be pressed into sheets of [[paper]] at the screw press. Unlike other jobs at the screw press, this requires [[papermaker|paper making]] and not [[pressing]]. Sheets of paper also have quality levels, while other products at the screw press do not.

* Screw presses sometimes do not allow the "press [[honeycomb]]" job to be added directly; adding the job via the [[manager]] interface should get the work started.

'''Roomcarnage''' is a v0.34.11 fortress presented in the style of a serialized epic. Over the course of more than forty updates, it chronicles the rise of the dwarves of the Momentous Dye in a particularly interesting embark location: a [[terrifying]] [[glacier]] [[volcano]] that rains [[elf]] blood. The most notable feature of the fortress is the ongoing weaponization of the volcano itself, finally realized in the twenty-second installment.

In addition to the constant reanimation of dead animals, dwarves, and parts thereof; foul fog zombie liaisons and caravans; and a mysterious vampire cult, the dwarves of Roomcarnage have dealt with the horrors of nakedness, encroaching FPS death, and — worst of all! — alcohol deprivation.
