Non-Illustrated Version
Bronzemurder: a tale of Dwarf Fortress by Tim Denee

The thriving fortress Bronzemurder. Population: 66 and counting. (Above ground, lies the military barracks and windmills. Below one finds the entrance and workshops. Beneath these, stockpiles, and lower still the sleeping and dining quarters. Go down again and a trap lined tunnel connects the fortress to column of pumps which leads to a cavernous underground lake.)
----
23 levels below the surface A legendary fell beast rests on the first pump in a mighty pump stack, a grand project that has taken years of concerted dwarven effort in order to bring running water to the fort.

All 23 pumps are in place, and the dwarves have finally figured out how to bring power to the pumps from the windmills above ground. The only problem is one small engineering error; the first pump, the lowest one, needs to be pumped manually.

A dwarf has to go down there and operate it.
----
<blockquote>Oggez Rashas "An enormous iguana with external ribs. It has thin wings of stretched skin and it appears to be emaciated. Beware its poisonous sting!"</blockquote>
----
If an ordinary dwarf wakes the creature, he will run away when attacked and lead the beast right back to the heart of Bronzemurder.

The militia, however... Maybe they will kill it, solving the problem. Even if they fail and die, at least they won't lead Rashas back.

YES, SEND THE MILITIA. Bronzemurder's bravest sons.
----
S.N.A.F.U

# Oggez Rashas destroys the militia in a matter of seconds. One war dog survives and backs up the stairs.
# Oggez Rashas chases the dog up the stairs, where a mechanic is installing several traps.
# The dog is slaughtered by the beast, and the mechanic runs all the way up the stairs to the main fortress.
# Oggez Rashas follows, now chasing a crowd of masons, architects, and mechanics who had been putting the finishing touches on various levels of the pump stack.
# The fell beasts [sic] blows straight past the trap-lined corridor.
# Chaos erupts in the dining room as the creature emerges from the stairs. Already a third of the fortress is dead.
# By coincidence, a party of unlucky migrants arrive. They are immediately drafted into a ramshackle militia.
# The ramshackle militia confront the beast as it storms the stockpiles. The militia is slaughtered in seconds.
# Chaos erupts in the stockpiles as Oggez Rashas chases and kills dwarves at random.
# Refugees cluster in the barracks outside. Masons are ordered to pave over the entrance stairs, to block the creature inside. Two of the three stairwells are blocked when it bursts out of the third, killing the masons.
# The last hope is that the field of traps around the main entrance will kill the creature when it makes it that far.
# Driven mad with trauma, dwarves in the barracks begin rioting and attacking each other. The militia starts arresting and beating dwarves. Oggez Rashas blows past the traps and puts the riot to rest by killing everything.
----
Although there are around seventy casualties, all is not lost.
While the beast finishes off the livestock above ground...

FIVE DWARVES ARE ALIVE, GATHERED IN THE DINING HALL

* One brewer, huddled in the corner crying.
* One jeweler, building a wall to block off the sleeping quarters. It is the only way to keep the beast away from the survivors. He walls them in and himself out. Does he think he is saving them or killing them? We will never know.
* A carpenter, a cheese-maker, and a miller. Walled into the bedroom wing of the fortress, cut off completely; from the stockpiles, from the surface, from everything.
----
The two dwarves outside the wall are struck down. With nothing still living in sight, Oggez Rashas rests at the entrance to the fortress.

The three surviving dwarves set about immediate tasks.

To prevent infection, corpses and body parts from the massacre are dragged into the large, ornate rooms previously occupied by nobles. Now vacant, these rooms are the only sizable ones left that the survivors can access. All the viscera is piled inside and the doors are barred.

A donkey and a dog were walled in with the dwarves. They are the only food source.

The dwarves can access the stairwell to the pumpstack, so they can get water.

They're not happy, they have no plans and are certainly doomed, but they're alive.

OGGEZ RASHAS WAITS
----
After several months, after all hopes has been lost, a human trade caravan arrives. One would think the soft humans would get massacred.

As it turns out, Oggez Rashas has been severely wounded during his attack on the dwarf fortress. The three human caravan guards are experienced warriors. In battle, one human has both legs broken. One loses and eye and suffers a punctured lung.

But finally, finally, they kill the beast.
----
HEARING THE CREATURE'S DEATHCRY, THE SURVIVORS BREAK DOWN THEIR BARRACADE

One refuses to leave his bedroom and before long dies of thirst. A prolonged and painful suicide.

But the other two carry on. Though it takes them three lonely years, they drag all the corpses outside into a pile, and clean all the blood out of the fortress. Three caravans come, and each time jewel-encrusted stonecrafts are wheeled out from the old Bronzemurder stockpiles and loaded on.

The two dwarves don't need the trade, but they are sending a message to the outside world.

BRONZEMURDER IS ALIVE
----
Eventually, migrants do arrive. A lot of them.

The migrants find a mere two dwarves living in Bronzemurder.
Two tough-as-nails, poorly-clothed, deeply traumatized dwarves who reek of bad hygiene, rotting corpses, and booze.

A lone kakapo appears occasionally in any woodland biome and meanders around adorably. Kakapos can be captured to produce some meager quantity of eggs, which is likely the most suitable use for them as tearing the adorable thing apart only provides enough meat to fill up six round little dwarves for a season. Kakapos can live up to a maximum age of 120 years. Dwarves may like kakapos for their longevity, their flightlessness or their booming calls.

The 16&times;16 tilesets are a subset of square character sets. 16&times;16 is a frequently used size, as shown by the number of tilesets in this section. This is probably because all of the best creature graphics sets use 16&times;16 tiles. Those alternate sets for creatures can be found at graphics sets. Notable originals include the broken bolt/ashes tiles, the ballista heads/large hills, the small hills, the ore (gear animation is pleasing, though axle animation is unimproved), ground tiles, and vermin. Also, bins look decent and up/down stairs look okay. This set looks its best with Sphr's graphics.
|comments=Impressed with the genius of using sprites as tiles, I cobbled together this tileset of my own. It uses Super Foul Egg's superb font as a base, with several sprites also found in other users' sets. Because a lot of letters are used for graphics, I suggest that you remove accented letters from names with this set. I also suggest you shift some items to other icons, such as the coniferous trees (change Pine, Cedar, Larch from 024 to 147), the turtle (change 15 to 151), and Quarry Bush leaves (change from 006 to 003).
V2 now with new graphics for walls and liquids, as well as some other tweaks here and there and a first attempt at using dual-color sprites using a cyan base instead of simple greyscale. (Right now implemented for beds, wood and statues.)
It has a more textured feel to the walls and makes heavy use of the new transparency features to make some of the tiles a little more dynamic. |comments=Designed for fullscreen. Inspired by Herrbdog's tileset, I created a shaded tileset targeting the default fullscreen 800x600 resolution. Basicaly, you have the exact same "curses" default tileset but with some shading done to the lower right of each letters and items. I've left alone everything which was related to mining or was meant to be plain, for example the smoothered tiles and the plain tiles in the demo. The reason behind that is that I didn't find much logic to have those graphics shaded as they could possibly connect on any direction on the screen, which would make the shading a little strange. Please note that this tileset is only a "beta". I might work on it again if there is enough people who like it and would like improvements. You can discuss the matter here.
This font is actually different from the 8x14 version in that 20 characters have been replaced with the original MDA wide versions. These 'extra' wide characters are sandwiched in between the end of the 8x14 and beginning of the 8&times;8 font in the EGA BIOS ROM. The changed characters, in ASCII order, are: arrow-left-and-right, '"', '+', '-', 'M', 'T', 'V', 'W', 'X', 'Y', 'Z', 'm', 'v', 'w', 'ae', cent sign, yen, peseta, plus-minus, and division sign. Other than these characters, all characters are the same, with rightmost-row duplicated on the C and D rows like the MDA (though I don't actually know if this is technically correct).
Changed most text characters as well as some others to 4x4 with blackspace to avoid tiling. Most characters have been revised to be spaced out to be more distinguishable in such a small set. After seeing the dev update earlier today about increasing your view size I decided to create this small font. This has been built completely from scratch, mostly while at work today. I may be making a shaded version in the future. The first image to the right is from the Abeyverse succession game.
|comments=Version 2.05. Updated 11/12/07 to de-fuzz uppercase letters, added serifs and clarified lowercase letters, made horizontal spacing consistent throughout character set, fixed one error in the double horizontal-left-right, single-vertical-up-down character, made exclamation points consistent, thinned out question mark and inverse question mark, sharpened sideways stemless arrows, clarified international characters, and clarified some greek letters. Since v2.0: fixed 'i' 'g', fixed Yen symbol, fixed smiley 0x01 to not have an extra line to its right, lowered the period and colon characters, fixed position of 'x'. Thanks to Markavian for ideas on how to improve the font, as well as an occasional character glyph.

Stone decorations?
Artifacts and objects made by other civs can have stone decorations. Is that another thing which is not possible in fortress mode? --Niggy 17:58, 5 June 2010 (UTC)
:I've got an artifact coffer, made by a mason, who used four pieces of chert. It ended up with "encrusted", "adorned with rings", "menaces with spikes", and an "image of a large roach". So your artifacts can get stone decorations. Other civs don't trade artifacts to you. Their objects... um, elves do primarily wood decorations, and humans seem to prefer bone and such. My dwarves tend to stone, yes, but they also do gems and bone and metal.
:I'd thus assume it's dependent on your civilizations. They'll do decorations based on what they have available to them, with an emphasis on what substances they prefer. --DeMatt 18:49, 5 June 2010 (UTC)
::Now that I reread your question, I think I misunderstood the first time. No, you can't put stone decorations on things. Artifacts may end up with stone decorations, but there's currently no way for you to deliberately put stone on items. Kinda makes sense, given that stones are, well, big enough to carve whole tables and doors out of. --DeMatt 00:13, 6 June 2010 (UTC)
