I have renovated this page in order to compartmentalize information and add more links. This is obviously a major change from its previous state but I have kept almost all of the wording from the previous version, pulling in bits of information to flesh out the sections for tasks other than [[smoothing]] as well as creating some redirect pages. I would like to similarly renovate most of the closely related articles for [[Engraver]]'s tasks. If anyone has any thoughts, tips or concerns please feel free to voice them. See [[DF2012_Talk:Stone detailing]] for my motivation in doing this. And if I have overstepped my bounds or this article is malformed/hideously out of style feel free to revert it! : Just a little change – I replaced {{tl|for/see}} with {{tl|main}} (which is a little easier to use and less redundant), since most of them appeared to be more in-depth articles. :: Good edits. {{tl|main}} is definitely easier to use, I'll have to do some research on templates. The only question I have is why you changed [[DF2012:Minecart#Tracks]] to [[Minecart]]. I agree that having the pound symbol in the link was ugly, but I think it's appropriate given the context. Is there any way to name the link 'Tracks' and have it point to 'Minecart#Tracks' with the wiki's markup?

:: Also, I'm not sure what you mean about this being a good place for the organization being that it isn't an industry (agreed on it not being an industry). Do you mean that organization such as this should be used on an industries own page with it's sub-skills and labors not being as detailed, while it is alright for this page because it is not part of an industry? :::Good catch, I fixed that. Anyway, all I meant by industries was that several industries (e.g. [[Metal industry]], [[Gem industry]]) contain most central information to their topic. However, this topic doesn't have a similar page (since engraving isn't much of an industry), so this page is a good substitute. I have renovated this page in order to compartmentalize information and add more links. It is only possible to smooth natural [[stone]] walls and floors. Soil cannot be smoothed and constructed walls and floors are created smooth. The skill of the engraver does not affect the [[quality]] of the smoothed tiles.

It is only possible to engrave natural stone walls and floors. Soil cannot be engraved. Engraving increases the value of a smoothed wall or floor and gives it a [[quality]] level, which is dependent upon the engravers’ skill.
While experienced dwarfs are more likely to engrave historical events than a novice, it is unclear if personality has any effect.

Fortifications are semi-permeable walls that allow some objects, such as projectiles and liquids, to pass through them. They can be created in natural and constructed stone walls as well as constructed from the build menu.

Tracks can be carved from natural stone floors and ramps as well as constructed from the build menu. They are used to transport minecarts which are [[tools]] used mostly for [[hauling]].

== Slabs ==
Slabs are created at a [[mason's workshop]] and engraved with the victim’s name at a [[craftsdwarf's workshop]]. They are a common alternative to [[coffin]] when a body cannot be retrieved.

== Training ==
Having engravers smooth large areas can be a good way to train them since it doesn’t consume resources, doesn’t create garbage and will not produce low quality results. It also builds experience very quickly at higher skill levels and is a great way to utilize idlers in a less busy fort for its low level of designating needed. However, since only natural stone surfaces can be smoothed, there is a limited (albeit huge) surface to train engravers on.

Players concerned with using as few non-renewable resources as possible can instead resort to building constructed walls, designating them for fortification engraving via {{k|d}}-{{k|a}}, and de-constructing them afterwards. Since fortifications don’t have quality, this will never cause a negative [[thought]] for the engraver.

I came to this page trying to learn the attributes that were trained by the stone detailing labor, and was disappointed to not find them here. I think the most relevant result for a search on "Stone detailing" should contain this information. I ended up searching for another page on military cross-training that I had seen similar information on earlier. If I can go about this the hard/wrong way, so can other users.

There are two ways I can see to remedy this. The information could be added directly in the article or in it's template. Another potential option is to redirect this page to the [[Engraver]] page which has the attributes, and expand that page with Stone detailing and Engraving sections for the associated labors. As an example, [[Architecture]] redirects to [[Building designer]].

I'm not accustomed to editing wikis or familiar with this wikis general practices and organizational structure, so I would like others thoughts on this before i make any changes. [[User:Rawng|Rawng]] ([[User talk:Rawng|talk]]) 00:12, 6 June 2013 (UTC)
