Horseshoe crabs are creatures found inhabiting ocean biomes. Smaller than a chicken, they are unable to endanger your dwarves and make for ideal defensive training partners in adventurer mode, being nearly harmless save for any lucky hits to the face. Unlike most animals, they can't be trained nor possess any pet value, and a butchered crab will only yield a single piece of meat and fat.
So I've been doing some science! on an adventuring bard and have added a couple attributes to the speaker, singer, and musician pages. I've tested this with the advinfo.lua DF Hack plugin and am reasonably confident that it's accurate. I would like to add those to this page, and think I could edit some parts of it. However, I have no idea how to add skills to the {SkillsBySoulAttribute} section. Is there anyone who knows how that might be done?
Forests are biomes which are characterised by extremely dense tree growth and large numbers of murky pools.

There are many types of forest, but the main difference between them is the wildlife that inhabits the area. Elves build their homes, known as forest retreats, in any type of forest.

Particularly dense forests may have so many trees that, in order for wagons to arrive, you will need to cut a path to the edge of the map. Building a road along this path will prevent trees regrowing and blocking the way. Trees are listed along the wildlife. There are only three kind of trees that are specific to the alignment of the forest. These are Feather tree (good), Glumprong (evil), and Highwood (savage).

The six types of forests you will find are:

* Taiga
* Temperate broadleaf forest
* Temperate coniferous forest
* Tropical dry broadleaf forest
* Tropical moist broadleaf forest
* Tropical coniferous forest

Taigas and tropical forests are situated in harsh climates, and acquiring water there can become a challenge.

* Taiga
* Temperate broadleaf forest
* Temperate coniferous forest
* Tropical dry broadleaf forest
* Tropical moist broadleaf forest
* Tropical coniferous forest

Taigas and tropical forests are situated in harsh climates, and acquiring water there can become a challenge.

I've been doing a bit of experimentation with the creature_standard raw, making dwarf personality traits static (ie [PERSONALITY:DISCORD:76:76:76]) and seeing what the effects have been on the social skills dwarves could learn by socializing in Fortress Mode. I've had a fair amount of success (I think I've figured eight of the ten social skills) and am using trial and error to [hopefully] figure out the last two.

CRUELTY > 75 means a dwarf won't learn the consoler skill, HUMOR < 25 means he won't learn the comedian skill, DISCORD < 25 means he won't learn the intimidator skill, DISCORD > 75 means he won't learn the pacifier skill, GREGARIOUSNESS < 25 means he won't learn the conversationalist skill, ASSERTIVENESS < 25 means he won't learn the persuader skill -or- the intimidator skill (meaning intimidator requires a dwarf to be both somewhat assertive and not too harmonious), and FRIENDLINESS > 75 enables a dwarf to learn the flatterer skill, hence why it's fairly rare. Liar isn't actually learned contingent on a personality trait, but I think it's based on ethics and values. Most dwarves don't learn it (because of their [VALUE:TRUTH:30] entity token) unless they specifically "do not particularly value the truth."

I'll eventually get around to seeing whether judge of intent and negotiator are contingent on certain personality traits (it's getting to the point that I'm doubting that they are). If any of y'all feel like checking some of these values yourself, feel free. If you test the way I did, I might suggest quickly digging out a 4x4 room and designating it a tavern--they'll socialize a lot, and since it's small they won't spend time dancing instead of talking.

Animal people are indigenous tribes of half-man, half-beast creatures with various animal-like traits (such as flying, thievery, and poisons), inherited from their base animal. The original animal people were based on creatures classes, while more recently discovered animal people are based on variations of species instead. They may appear either wandering above ground in savage environments or in the caverns; these two populations form distinct groups. Animal people generally have significantly longer lifespans than their base animals, as well as the ability to learn.

Subterranean animal people are often equipped with primitive weaponry such as wooden spears and blowguns (they are also the only known source of blowdarts, which they will not willingly relinquish). While not interested in formal negotiations with dwarves, these animal people are usually not hostile; some will choose to band together against a common threat. Animal people are not trapavoid and will often blunder into your cage traps, serving as live bait for larger game and uninvited guests.

Subterranean animal people can join your party in adventurer mode, if you can find them.

History
Present from the very first release of the game, in the early two-dimensional releases animal people did not exist as a class but were instead part of a small group of subterranean creatures (so called "river monsters") that would emerge from the cave river to harass your dwarves (the frogman, now amphibian man; the lizardman, now reptile man; and the snakeman, now serpent man). With the release of 40d and three dimensions these creatures had their properties and names redefined and were moved to flock near underground rivers and pools.

In the v0.31 release these underground water features were expanded into the current-version caverns, and the original animal people were renamed to their current forms and moved there. Their behavior was redefined as well to make them more interesting, as they would now linger around "camps" and use poison-tipped weapons. v0.31 also introduced a small number of other underground creatures, these named after and based on specific animals: the antman, bat man, cave fish man, cave swallow man, olm man, and rodent man.

The v0.34 release added hundreds more animal people species, all of which appear exclusively above-ground in savage biomes; these creatures are more or less distinct from the earlier, subterranean ones. They differ from subterranean species in that their behavior is much simpler: they simply wander around the map like any other wild creature would, and do not form camps or wield poisoned weapons. They do not exist as civs per se, unlike their older counterparts, but can sometimes be found living in human, dwarven, and elven civs, where they behave more or less like other members of their adopted culture.

The v0.42 release introduced conversion tables which would produce an anthropomorphic race from every animal species generated with the world. Conversion tables also produce giant versions of each species, and Toady has announced that giant anthropomorphic variations will be added.

Examples
Original animal men:
*Amphibian man
*Reptile man
*Rodent man
*Serpent man

Species added in v0.31:
*Antman
*Bat man
*Cave fish man
*Cave swallow man
*Olm man

Humans are intelligent Humanoids creatures that live in cities on the plains. They are one of the races playable in adventurer mode. Their buildings are made entirely of wood (or in the case of towers and castles, stone), and usually include several houses and shops, and a tavern. Their metal-working technology specializes in bronze, though they also make use of copper, iron, and silver. The typical lifespan of a human ranges between 60 and 120 years.

In fortress mode, they are primarily interested in trade, and generally send large caravans in summer. Humans usually bring overworld food stuffs, cloth, leather, extra-large clothing and bronze items. If their caravans are destroyed or if their diplomat is killed, regardless of cause, they will eventually send a siege force to your fortress.

In Adventurer mode, they are the dominant civilization - their nobles can be found living in castles, and after earning sufficient fame, they can give out challenging quests.

The language they speak is human.

Ethics
In-game humans have a system of ethics similar to real-life humans of past times. Through world generation, humans will almost always become friendly with dwarves, most likely become enemies with goblins and elves, and may possibly become enemies with kobolds and animal-people.

The devouring of sapient beings and of dead enemy combatants are the two most horrific crimes to humans, who see them as unthinkable acts; this puts them at odds with both elves and goblins, who are more lenient. Humans routinely use torture to extract information and to set an example, but find torture for sport appalling and shun the torture of animals.

In stark contrast to the ethics of elves, kobolds and animal-people, humans find keeping trophies of animals, sapient beings and of other humans perfectly acceptable. Like dwarves, humans find killing animals, enemies and plants acceptable. However, humans can avoid punishment for killing other humans if the killing had been done for good reason, unlike dwarves who sentence murderers to death regardless of whether they can provide justification. Humans find the killing of neutral beings acceptable so long as there are no repercussions.

Human ethics regarding crime are the same as dwarven ethics (where assault, theft, trespassing and vandalism are seriously punished while some crimes such as breaking oaths and treason are punishable by death) with the one exception being that slavery is considered acceptable.

In .40.xx humans value martial prowess, stoicism, friendship and family. They place a certain degree of value on self-control, power, loyalty, fairness, merriment, skill, craftsmanship, and commerce. They slightly respect law, leisure time, independence, hard work, perseverance and romance.

As of .42.01, each human civ has randomized values.

Playing as Humans in Fortress Mode
There are two ways to have human in your fortress. You can either have an
Starting a Human Fortress
To start a "Human Town" (or, alternately, an Elven Forest Retreat, Goblin Tower or Kobold Cave) one need only add the tag [SITE_CONTROLLABLE] to the entity_default.txt file in the /raw/objects folder, under whichever race you wish to play. You should only do this after having already generated a world, otherwise you may encounter bugs. It's also advisable to only have one race playable at a time by removing the [SITE_CONTROLLABLE] tag from all but the race you wish to play, for similar reasons. Gameplay adapts remarkably well, as if Toady intended us to do this, although there are a few bugs mostly relating to traders from certain races not arriving at your fort. The Elves can carry with them many different pets upon embarking, and the races will start with the appropriate food and plants (for example, humans have prickle berries instead of plump helmets by default). Also, one of the 7 humans you start with will be a "warlord" and will not work.

Human Mercenaries/Performers
If you have set up a tavern in your Dwarven fortress and you live near a human civilization, Humans may visit your fortress. In time, one of them might petition for long-term residency, either as a performer or as a mercenary. If they enlist as a performer, they will remain in your inn and perform music, tell stories and poetry, and provide social contacts for your Dwarves. If they decide to become a mercenary, they will have a weapon skill, and can be enlisted in your army and controlled as you would any dwarf. Note, however, that you cannot assign them labours, making a human-only fort impossible. Because humans are larger than dwarves, they can wield weapons that your dwarves cannot wield, such as two-handed swords, pikes, and mauls.

Humans may also visit as monster hunters, occasionally attacking creatures in the caverns, though that may be bugged.
