From what I have found out so far I can say Igneous extrusive layer are only found in areas with a volcanism higher than 90. Volcanoes are only placed on tiles with a volcanism of 100.
Places volcanoes on tiles with a volcanism of 100, if there are not enough tiles the world is rejected.
Does that imply, that if I set max volcanism to 99 and min volcano number to 50 it'll never accept the world?--Dorten 00:42, 4 August 2008 (EDT)
Volcanism seems to impact stone types. High minimum volcanism and you won't get sedimentary or metamorphic layers, just lots of igneous rock.
I don't think magma pipes are exclusive to volcanism-100 tiles; i've had pipes come up through flux, albiet rarely.
I've been experimenting with the X- and Y-variance values to try and get a better handle on them. This page could use some information about Glacial and Tundra tiles.

The following all applies to medium maps. Someone else can find out how it works for others.

Glaciers begin at -5 and every degree blow that extends it further up the map by 2 region tiles.
During world gen it only chooses either north or south to start that trend from.

And glaciers and tundra take place in the elevations between mountain and ocean and the difference between tundra and glacier is drainage.
Mountain Peaks
I believe mountain peaks are used as starting points for creating elevation during world generation. I think I remember reading this in a Gamustra interview with Toady. Can't confirm though so no edits made to the article.--Jpwrunyan 13:55, 16 May 2009 (UTC)

I got the information on the settings from this forum post. Not sure about the accuracy, but it seems pretty good. The rest of the information is just from personal experience. --Timmeh 01:11, 3 April 2009 (UTC)
:Just a question, but the entry seems to assume use of the mouse. Is that necessary? Can the world painter be used using keyboard only? Might be worth noting either way.--Jpwrunyan 08:14, 8 April 2009 (UTC)
:I tinkered with this last night and indeed it looks like the world painter requires you to use the mouse exclusively.--Jpwrunyan 02:41, 9 April 2009 (UTC)
::From what I can tell, there is no way (at the moment) to opperate the World Painter with the keyboard, save a few simple commands. That being said, I don't really have substantial experience with it yet, so take what I say about it with a grain (or small bucket) of salt. --Timmeh 11:57, 9 April 2009 (UTC)
I changed the line about temperature a bit but don't think I conveyed the whole concept. If you set the minimum temperature for the world lower it's possible to get glaciers down the middle of the map at about -50. The frozen biomes require the peak temperature to remain below some threshold during the summer, and that component is much smaller at the frozen edge of the map. With medium maps at least either top of bottom is randomly selected as a polar edge and then the seasonal temperature variation grows as you get further from it.

The world painter tool allows you to paint features onto a map, that is then used when generating a world. It is very difficult to use properly, and tends to result in endless rejected worlds, unless you loosen or remove the restrictions placed on biomes and civilizations in the advanced settings. That being said it is also a very powerful tool, and allows you to generate worlds more to your liking.

Usage
To start world painter, you have to start Dwarf Fortress, select the "Design New World With Parameters" option, then hit e to editing the advanced parameters and finally hit p to open world painter. Note that the default world templates cannot be edited with world painter. You will need to make a copy and then edit that. Furthermore, unlike most other aspects of Dwarf Fortress, the world painter requires use of the mouse. There is no keyboard equivalent way to paint parameters.

The interface is reasonably simple. Simply left click on a tile and the settings on the right side of the screen with be applied to that tile. To move the view, right click and drag. You can left click on any of the text on the right to change the setting it represents. By clicking on the title of one of the settings, or the <View> text to the right of it, you can replace the default view with a view representing just that parameter (You can return to the normal view by pressing
ENTER. By clicking the text "brush = ____", you can change the value of that parameter. Clicking on the text "painting" will toggle weather the parameter is painted when you click on a tile, and clicking on "Will Be Saved", will allow the world generator to deal with that parameter, instead of using what was painted.

The Settings
Rainfall goes from 0-100, with 0 making dry areas

Elevation goes from 1-400, with anything below 100 being water, and with 300+ being mountain.

Temperature goes from 25-75, and has little visible effect in the editor, with the exception of creating glaciers and tundra near the edges.

Drainage goes from 0-100, with 0 making areas that retain water, such as swamps and deserts, and 100 making areas that lose any rainfall that comes, such as forests and badlands.

Savagery goes from 0-100, and has no effect on the land, but influences the wildlife that will spawn there.

Volcanism goes from 0-100, with 0 never having volcanoes and 100 always having them, unless a maximum is otherwise specified in the advanced optionsverify.
