A goblin siege arrived, 14 swordsmen and no squad leader, the invaders camped at the edge of the map and didn't do anything, I thought somehow their leader must of died after checking the siege page a few times, but I also checked the dead/missing list and no goblin leader, the invaders did have to cross a river to path into my fortress but I didn't think that would be a problem in 1/8 depth water, eventually the invaders left and instantly after, I got a trade caravan from the Elves, I thought it was highly unlikely to get trade caravans after sieges unless you stopped the siege quickly, am I missing something big?
update on what i've found. I'm in a freezing biome, very close to the north pole. I've reached 160 dwarves but i've only received snatchers from the gobbos. I'm not sure if this is because of the temperature or some other factor. I'm assuming it's not because of the civilizations nearby because i have recieved the snatchers. If i see any new developments i will report. any extra information is appreciated --[[User:Dissimulation|Dissimulation]] 04:06, 23 June 2012 (UTC)
Another reason they may not be coming is my fort has very little created wealth/exported wealth due to lack of resources. About 190k created and 6k exported --[[User:Dissimulation|Dissimulation]] 12:48, 24 June 2012 (UTC)
Alright, the winter right after my exported was increased to 10k I recieved a Giant and then right after the giant a goblin siege. I'm going to test the theory that exported wealth effects sieges in another type of biome. --[[User:Dissimulation|Dissimulation]] 17:44, 24 June 2012 (UTC)
:If it has to do with exported wealth, then it's no where near 10k. I think it might have to do with the amount of time you've had the fortress. I normally start getting Goblin sieges around the 2nd or 3rd year of the fortress being alive. I can't remember what season, but I remember that once I had a siege end, a caravan (I think it was elven) arrive, then another siege begin all within 5 minutes of each other. Needless to say, that caravan was slaughtered. Anyway, I'm off topic. I only had 1-2k exported wealth that entire time. Maybe it's created wealth? My created wealth had 6 digits on it, but I can't remember exactly what it was. I wasn't really taking notes at the time. lol. --[[User:Zackman0010|Zackman0010]] 00:17, 2 July 2012 (UTC)

I've just thought of something. the fort that had a low exported wealth also had a very vigilant guard dog that never let any snatchers into the fort as well. the only thing the goblins could have known I had would be the front gate, a chain, and a dog. did your fort have tight defenses versus thieves? --[[User:Dissimulation|Dissimulation]] 13:24, 4 July 2012 (UTC)
:Actually, no. I was actually getting sick and tired of being interrupted by 'Snatcher! Protect the children!' or 'Thief!'. One time, I even found a goblin snatcher 5 levels below my entrance. He had managed to get through the front hallway and down 5 flights of stairs before being spotted in the hallway to the dining room. I really need to start using guard dogs more often. --[[User:Zackman0010|Zackman0010]] 03:10, 6 July 2012 (UTC)
== Goblin Leader ==

I saw this posted somewhere on the forums once, but I cannot remember where. In my world, after I killed the Goblin leader, no more mounts appeared the next siege. I added the 'Verify' to make sure it wasn't just a one time thing. I lost the fortress before a second mountless siege could arrive, so I can't test any further for now. If I manage to kill the leader again and I don't see any more mounts, I'll remove the 'Verify' myself if it isn't already removed. --[[User:Zackman0010|Zackman0010]] 02:15, 30 June 2012 (UTC)
At any rate what I would like to know is how civilization leaders appearing in sieges affect the future. I.e if i kill/capture him would goblins stop coming or if they will try to rescue their leader at full cost.--[[User:Doktoro Reichard|Doktoro Reichard]] ([[User talk:Doktoro Reichard|talk]]) 08:21, 11 January 2014 (UTC)

The entry under "Goblins" repeats the data that if the Goblin General is killed (or simply enters leading a siege and then departs) that the goblin civilization ceases to get mounts after that point. I have seen the behavior with mounts ceasing to appear once the general is gone. However, in v34.11 I saw this happen and the goblins continued to get mounts in the sieges following the one in which the civilization's general appeared. Said general did, however, disappear from the civilization's leader list. So, at this point this particular game behavior varies by which version is being run. --[[User:Oaktree|Oaktree]] 19:55, 27 July 2012 (UTC)
Anyone know how the dwarven civilization acts when you start a war with them in a modded game? Would be easier if I knew whether the game already offers the possibility of dwarf vs dwarf warfare, though the "loyalty cascade" bug implies that the game doesn't consider that scenario normal. --[[Special:Contributions/184.20.23.17|184.20.23.17]] 21:36, 22 September 2013 (UTC)
It allows a dwarf to join the [[Dwarven Castes#Dwarven Priest|Apostles of Armok]] and construct ceremonial statues and totems that are needed for the [[Altar of Armok]] and [[Temple of Armok]]. It is also possible to Pray To Armok here and train the prayer skill, but without receiving any items as reward.
Like the altar, the temple allows you to offer a variety of items to Armok, in exchange for rewards and allows your priests to perform ceremonies which grant benefits to your dwarves. This building is part of the dwarven [[religion]] system.

Shrines are the most basic of religious buildings. Any dwarf can pray at them to receive a small gift from Armok with a success rate of around 3-6% for most things. There is no cost to this praying, which makes it a good way to train your apostles while still retaining a chance to get items (which wouldn't be the case with the [[monastery]]).

If you have a strange mood that can't be fulfilled, you may be able to pray at a shrine for the item(s) you need.
==Cutting wood==
Only needing one block to be built, this workshop should be constructed early. It automatically queues actions for smoothing rough wood logs and cutting gnarled roots. Both actions have a 10% chance to produce a pile of sawdust or tree acorns. Acorns allow trees to be planted in farm plots. Sawdust allows the making of plywood. Both require the [[Sawmill]]. If you dislike having the sawdust around, you can set it to clean/destroy it for you.

Cutting logs into planks gives you 4 wooden blocks that can be used in constructions, but not in workshops. Good for walls and floors.

Certain types of wood, like [[DF2012:Feather tree|featherwood]], cannot be cut into planks using the wood splitting block. You need a [[Sawmill|sawmill]] for that.
You can cut wood, smooth wood, [[DF2012:Feather tree|featherwood]], [[DF2012:Fungiwood|fungiwood]], netherbark, ironbark and steeloak into planks. From each log you will get 4 planks, which effectively act as blocks. You can use this for big aboveground wooden forts, wooden floors, or whatever you like.

You can also cut gnarled roots, which are dug up in the soil layer, to one unit of wood each.
==Cutting wood==

You need a [[Sawmill]] for that.
The Archeologist's Study uses found [[fossil]]s, [[relict]]s and [[treasure]]s and restores and identifies them for you. Fossils are found in single units in [[cv:stone|stone]], or you might find a vein of ruins. Ruins have a bigger chance of containing any type of relicts and treasure.
The outcome is completely random, you never know what you'll find. This should make mining a bit more interesting and add suspense to running the reactions.
[[Fossil]]s are actually considered gems by the game, but cutting them in the [[cv:Jeweler's workshop|Jeweler's workshop]] will prevent use by [[archeologist]]s.

Most reactions are run automatically, so your archeologist will quickly pick up the fossil and choose the right reaction for you.
Loot bags found will also be opened by the archeologist.

{{Quality|Superior|13:02, 2 May 2014 (UTC)}}
'''DFHack''' is an extensive standardized memory access library, packaged alongside a suite of basic tools that use it. Currently tools come in the form of plugins; external application is a planned feature for the future. For developers, DFHack is a comprehensive, standardized memory access package that unites the various ways tools access the Dwarf Fortress memory space, allowing for easier development of new tools. For users, it is a very useful utility complex that allows users to tweak their games in numerous ways in-game. This is probably one of the most useful and most-used utilities for the game, after [[Utilities#Dwarf Therapist|Dwarf Therapist]] and the [[tileset]]s, and is included in recent versions of the [[Utility:Lazy Newb Pack|Lazy Newb Pack]] on all platforms.

For an exhaustive list of and manual on the commands in the utility, see the [https://github.com/peterix/dfhack#commands GitHub documentation]. This wiki also has a [[Utility:DFHack/Programming|DFHack programming page]].

If you are using DFHack, '''do not report bugs on the Dwarf Fortress bug tracker''' unless you can prove that the bug is not being caused by DFHack or one of its plugins.

==Installation==
If you use a [[Utility:Lazy Newb Pack|recent edition of the Lazy Newb Pack]], DFHack is already installed and configured; otherwise see the instructions on [http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=91166 the Bay12 forum thread] for separate installation. The project is currently hosted on GitHub; for source, binaries, and a detailed discussion of how the program works, see [https://github.com/DFHack/dfhack here]. All new releases are announced in a [http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=91166 thread on the Bay12 forums]. DFHack works on Windows XP, Vista, 7, any modern Linux distribution, and OS X 10.6 and later. On Windows, you have to use the SDL version of DF. Currently, version 0.34.11 is supported (and tested). If you need DFHack for older versions, look for older releases.

DFHack is currently also being ported to Dwarf Fortress versions 0.28.181.40d and 0.23.130.23a - more information can be found [http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/User:Quietust#DFHack-40d here] and [http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/User:Quietust#DFHack-23a here], respectively.

==Common Uses==
DFHack is often used to automate some aspects of [[Fortress Mode]], or to make a specific one-off change.

===Automation===
See: workflow, autolabor, autobutcher, autochop, autonestbox, seedwatch.

===One-off changes===
Includes commands like "cleanowned scattered x" or "reveal".

==Scripts and Plugins==
One of the best features of DFHack is it's extensibility - anyone can create scripts or plugins. Some of the more notable are listed below; feel free to add to the list.

==== User Interface====

The best-known are [http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=119575 Falconne's UI Plugins], a collection which improves the in-game interface with features such as search functions in screens with big lists, the ability to place furniture before it's built and have it automatically allocated when available, box-select constructions(like laying designations) - including easier material selection and open space placement, easier pasturing, live happiness monitor, '''mouse support''', and an enhanced stocks screen. The plugins make existing tasks significantly easier, and also add new functions to the game which greatly enhance the experience - such as the autochop log quotas, or the ability (with buildingplanner) to lay out rooms with Quickfort before creating the required furniture.

There is also a [http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=124708 GUI for the Autobutcher plugin].

====Bugfixing====
Many bugfixes are included with DFHack, but not enabled by default - check dfhack.init to see if the tweak-* and fix/* lines are commented out. The [[Utility:Lazy_Newb_Pack|Starter Packs]] enables all bugfixes by default.

The [http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=126558 growth bug] is not fixed by DFHack by default, and can be patched with either a [http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=7849 plugin] (windows) or a [http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=91166.msg4313566#msg4313566 script] (any platform).

==== Features ====
These plugins add features to the game, and are mostly used by modders.
* [http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=127116 Digging invaders], a plugin that allows hostiles to dig and deconstruct walls to path to one's fortress.
* [http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=128487 Rendermax], a plugin that implements a lighting system at the graphics level.
* [http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=136155 Dwarven Emigration], a plugin that allows unhappy dwarves to emigrate with their families.
* [http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=135597 DFHack scripts designed for use in interactions as "spells"]
[[Welcome]] to the Dwarf Fortress Wiki. This is a collection of user-submitted guides, information and advice for [http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/ "Dwarf Fortress"]. Dwarf Fortress is a game for Windows, Linux and Mac, developed by [http://www.bay12games.com/ Bay 12 Games] featuring two modes of play, as well as distinct, randomly-generated worlds (complete with terrain, wildlife and legends), gruesome combat mechanics and ubiquitous alcohol dependency. The wiki currently has '''{{Template:NUMBEROFARTICLES}} articles'''.
'''Restraints''' can be built from {{L|chain}}s or {{L|rope}}s, despite the game asking for a chain, using the keys {{k|b}} + {{k|v}}. They can be used to tie up guard {{L|animals}}, prisoners, criminals or livestock.

A restraint is (technically) a 1-tile large {{L|building}}, a chain or rope which is used to restrain a {{L|dog}}, {{L|dwarf}} or other {{L|creature}} to a certain very limited area of movement. Unlike a {{L|cage}}, a restraint can only hold one creature, and the creature can move within a range of one tile from the location of the restraint itself, including up and down if {{L|stairs}} or slopes are in this area. This gives them, at most, a 3x3x3 cube of movement, limited as normal by {{L|wall}}s, {{L|door}}s etc. Restraints do not block movement, including movement of {{L|wagon}}s. While an animal is assigned to it the same as with a cage, using the {{K|q}} menu, dwarves can and will only be assigned from within the justice system.

Restraints can be used to keep a {{L|dog|war dog}} or other animal near areas where you need constant vigilance and defense. Chained animals placed near the entrance to your fort will spot {{L|kobold}} thieves that can bypass {{L|trap}}s and other passive defenses, pausing the game and {{L|announcement|announcing}} their presence. A pair of animals, placed opposite each other against the walls of a 3-wide corridor (so they cannot have more than 1 tile between them), are guaranteed to spot any {{L|thief}} that tries to enter, and (if combative) will similarly engage any hostile creature. But assigning a pasture for the guard animal is more resource efficient way to guard specific areas. This also allows the animal to walk away on its own if there ever is an alert that forces everybody to a certain area.

Restraints can also be useful in the {{L|meat industry}}, since animals on restraints can [[meat industry#Breeding|breed]], unlike animals in cages.

Currently, due to a bug, a restrained animal will keep the restraint on their upper body if it's deconstructed while the animal is still restrained. This can be used to "equip" your beasts with decorations, such as spiked chain collars or lavish ropes, but has no in-game effect.

Pastures are a feature that was released with version 0.31.19 and are {{L|activity zone}}s that the player creates to hold animals, especially grazing animals. Herbivorous animals now require grass to graze upon, and larger creatures require a greater amount of grass to feed themselves.

Grazing animals use the [GRAZER:<value>] token to signify how much grass they need to eat. This is an inverse number - the value in grazer signifies how much hunger is reduced when eating a unit of grass. A creature with ten times the grazer value needs one tenth the amount of grass (and hence, pasture land) as a creature with a small grazer value.

Animals which graze are typically good livestock candidates, and the larger the creature, the more meat they produce, but the more grass they need to consume.

It is believed that each {{L|time}} unit adds one point to hunger. An animal takes an average of one turn per ten time units, and so a creature of standard speed and agility with [GRAZER:10] would have to eat grass on every single one of its turns just to stave off starvation. Since it takes another turn just to move to the next tile to graze, anything with [GRAZER:20] or less is completely incapable of feeding itself enough grass, even if enough is available. Because of this, the larger creatures like dralthas are virtually impossible to keep fed, and elephants are incapable of feeding themselves fast enough to stave off starvation.

Animals do not need to graze to assign them to pastures. You can also assign pastures inside and use them to put animals that do not need to eat in certain areas.

I have a nagging sense from playing a year or two in a few different areas that the number of migrants is a bit more random now. I have one decently wealthy young outpost located far from it's civilization on the map which has gotten very few immigrants in the first two years. Perhaps with groups now moving on the overall map, it is more important to be close to your civilization's area so immigrant groups arrive more quickly and are less likely to get ambushed on the way? Pure conjecture on my part and not backed by any real evidence, but an interesting idea nonetheless. --[[User:Janus|Janus]] 16:15, 3 November 2007 (EDT)

Well, my first throw-away fortress got gigantic immigration crowds every single season. Then I abandoned, rerolled the world, and started a new fortress. It produces worlds more wealth than my first fortress, but I have only gotten one immigration wave on the second Spring, bringing my numbers to 24. I then received my second immigration on the start of the third Spring, bringing me up to 48 dwarves. I was very worried up until I got that first wave in the spring... I almost thought I was going to have to scrap the fortress and start again. For reference, I receive elf, human, and dwarf traders. No sieges yet. I have no deaths so far. It would seem that the MAXIMUM immigration amount is 24 for one season. [[User:FFLaguna|FFLaguna]] 23:33, 3 November 2007 (EDT)

[[Category:Military]]

Fortifications are arrow slits used in the [[defense]] of your fortress. They are most commonly used along the outside walls of your fortress, so that [[Marksdwarf|marksdwarves]] and [[siege engine]]s can fire at enemies from within the mountain. They can be carved from cave walls or built like any other [[construction]].

== Carving ==
Damaged rock cannot be used for fortifications.

A fortified wall can only be one tile wide. What this means is that you need to hollow out a room directly behind the wall you want to fortify. It is smartest to set this room up as a [[barracks]], or to put an [[archery target]] in there. That way, off-duty soldiers will be milling about at all times, and they will be ready to fire upon anyone who gets too close to the fortress.

Once you have chosen the wall you want to carve, smooth the stone along its length using {{K|d}} -> {{K|s}}. After it has been smoothed, re-designate the same wall for fortifications using {{K|d}} -> {{K|a}}. Stone smoothing and fortification require a dwarf that does [[stone detailing]].

After completion, marksdwarves, [[ballista]]s, and even [[catapult]]s will be able to fire through the fortifications. However, enemy ranged attackers can attack you from either side of the fortification, no matter which side was fortified.

== Construction ==
Fortifications can also be constructed from [[block]]s, [[wood]] or [[stone]] using {{K|b}} -> {{K|C}} -> {{K|F}}. They must be built tile by tile as there is no way to build more than one at a time.{{ver|0.27.169.33a}} Construction of wooden fortifications require the [[Carpentry]] skill, while fortifications made of block or stone require the [[Masonry]] skill.
Note: Every recipe that is not used in [[steel]] making (except [[electrum]]) requires some [[copper]]. If you want to have a variety of [[metal]]s in your fortress, you will want to conserve this resource.

A spreadsheet listing these recipes can be found at the following link. Work is being done currently to allow a person to input how much [[ore]] and [[bar]]s he has, and the sheet will tell him how many of what kinds of [[metal]]s he can make. Both Excel and Open Office formats are included: http://mkv25.net/showcase/df/Ore%20Smelting%20Chart.zip
=== Multiple Bars ===

Anyone else notice that when you smelt a multiple bar ore you alwas get the copper in the case of galenga? Perhaps the same is true for tetrdite. At the moment it looks like you get only one bar, while you have a chance for to. At least in my experience. --[[User:Soyweiser|Soyweiser]] 07:11, 7 November 2007 (EST)
:Perhaps you might be right. It does not say if you have a chance to get lead in the case of Galena, or if you have a chance to get copper with Tetrahedrite. It may be you always get these bars, and have a chance at a second bar. I will have to check but I didn't look too closely at the time that I did this.--[[User:Chthon|Chthon]] 12:05, 7 November 2007 (EST)
===Word Choice===
"Note that galena smelted alone often produces lead which is only used in producing lay pewter, a low quality ore"

Soyweiser: Just verified this, gem containing ores can be made into fortifications. Still looking into gems.

== Carving ==
Damaged rock cannot be used for fortifications, meaning that the outermost tiles of mountain rock may need to be mined away to expose the solid rock behind it.

Note: A fortified tile cannot contain [[gem]]s.

== Construction ==
== We are doing this! Let us do it right. ==

* '''A'''lphabet: OK, the first rule is that there must be a rule for each letter of the alphabet. That leaves 25 rules to go. (Sorry, my [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nomic nomic] instincts flared up.) --[[User:Peristarkawan|Peristarkawan]]

* '''B'''eauty: Try to make things look pretty.

* '''C'''ategories: When editing a page, stop to think about what categories it should be included in, and add them if necessary. Don't forget to consider categories that don't yet exist.

* '''D'''rama Bomb: Please, let's be civilized and limit the flamewars, personal attacks and insults.

* '''E'''dit: Be bold! If you have something to add, then add it. Don't tread lightly for fear of miffing someone - disagreements can be civilly resolved once they crop up.

* '''F'''acts: Try to avoid creating one-liner pages without links. Add as much pertinent information as you can.

* '''G'''ravitas (corollary to '''F'''acts): Try to avoid creating pages for topics about which there is little of substance to say. Creating such a page will waste your time and the time of the reader who ends up there. For example, we don't need a page for every different type of alcohol that exists in the game; all that needs to be said about the topic (possibly including a list of alcohols) can easily be said in a single, general page on [[alcohol]].

* '''H'''eadings: Try to organize the content of each page into sections of related information. The heading of each section should follow the style for '''N'''ames.

* '''I'''mages: Images and screenshots should use the default [[tilesets]] for clarity. Small diagrams should be constructed with [[Template:RT]], for easy editing, and to save on space. Exceptions are pages ''about'' tilesets and story pages like [[:Category:Bloodline Games|bloodline games]]. Images should always be in .png format. When uploading images, give them a name that is descriptive and unlikely to be duplicated. Names like "1", "screenshot", and "untitled" should be avoided.

* '''K'''eys: Keys to be pressed should be written using the [[:Template:K|k]] or [[:Template:Key|key]] templates. For example, the syntax <span style="font-family:monospace"><nowiki>{{k|q}}</nowiki></span> will generate {{k|q}}, a standardized and visually pleasing representation of the "q" key.

* '''N'''ames: The titles of new pages should be singular nouns, with only the first word capitalized. Example: ''Screw pump'', not ''Screw Pump'' or ''Screw pumps''. The exceptions to these rules are for terms that are always plural and for proper nouns.

* '''M'''ore: More people should use the raw files (found in your 'install dir\raw\objects') to get information about creatures and objects. It has loads of good information, that the game actually uses.

* '''P'''review: Use the preview button to avoid cluttering the history of a page.

* '''R'''edundancy: Before creating a new page, do a search to find out if the topic is already discussed in detail somewhere else. If you find that redundant pages already exist, merge their content and have one redirect to the other.

* '''S'''tyle: In general, try to follow the [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Manual_of_Style Wikipedia Manual of Style] when writing articles.

* '''T'''imelessness: The wiki is intended as a guide for all players, even new ones. As such, references to differences from or similarities to old versions of DF should be reduced and eliminated, except on pages specifically dealing with said differences or similarities. Avoid phrases like "now marble can be used to make steel" or "before, farms required two floodgates", etc. For facts that are likely to change, or placeholder features, use [[Template:Version]]. For example, you might say, "[[Cave-in]]s are buggy right now.<nowiki>{{version|0.27.169.33a}}</nowiki>"

* '''U'''ser pages: '''D'''rama Bomb is the only rule that applies to User: and Talk:User: pages.

== Enforcing consistency in screenshots? ==

Can I strongly suggest that all screenshots be taken with the default interface and tileset, for consistency's sake? It seems to me like that would be a good way of keeping the wiki aesthetics constant. [[User:EighenIndemnis|EighenIndemnis]] 11:33, 5 November 2007 (EST)

:We can make it a rule, but we shouldn't remove any screenshots for non-conformance (except to replace them with conforming screenshots). --[[User:Peristarkawan|Peristarkawan]] 11:46, 5 November 2007 (EST)

::Yeah, for some tutorials that are written while the user is playing, it would be impossible to anyway. [[User:EighenIndemnis|EighenIndemnis]] 11:47, 5 November 2007 (EST)

:::I agree that images should use the default tileset for articles, but I disagree for personal pages or bloodline games. --[[User:Markavian|Markavian]]

::::The rule as written already exempts bloodline games. The only rule that should apply to personal pages is '''D'''. --[[User:Peristarkawan|Peristarkawan]] 16:05, 5 November 2007 (EST)

Um, I added the rule before noticing the discussion here. Anyway, I added rule '''I''', inspired by the old [[Water wheel]] image ([[:Image:PerpetualMotion.JPG]]), which was incomprehesible to me and unnecessarily large. Like Peristarkawan said, the exemption of user pages is implied, but feel free to make it explicit if you want. --[[User:Turgid Bolk|Turgid Bolk]] 16:13, 5 November 2007 (EST)
How about this?

[[Image:World_creation_screen2.png | none | frame | 400px | World creation screenshot.]]

It's clean, neat and doesn't warp the page. :) The obvious drawback is file size is not monitored. Can't we edit the file upload settings to measure pixels? Nothing over 800x600? [[User:Schm0|Schm0]] 19:16, 7 November 2007 (EST)

== Redirects and article titles ==

How do you do that thing that makes a certain term redirect to a different page? Like [[Elephants]] redirecting to [[Elephant]], for example. --[[User:BahamutZERO|BahamutZERO]] 15:20, 30 October 2007 (EDT)

:If [[Elephants]] already exists, you can move the page to [[Elephant]], and it will create the redirect for you. Otherwise, just edit [[Elephants]] to read: <nowiki>#REDIRECT [[Elephant]]</nowiki> --[[User:Peristarkawan|Peristarkawan]] 15:26, 30 October 2007 (EDT)

:::Just FYI, if at all possible, ''do not create pages as plurals''. Use the following syntax: <nowiki>[[Elephant]]s</nowiki>: example [[Elephant]]s. --[[User:JT|JT]] 20:20, 31 October 2007 (EDT)

What about titles that are verbs? Should they be in "base-form"? Or whatever its called (my english on this level isnt the best). Example: should the title be '''Mine''' or '''Mining'''? --[[User:Mizipzor|Mizipzor]] 17:30, 31 October 2007 (EDT)

:Based on the Wikipedia style, titles should be nouns. So in your example it should be the gerund '''Mining''', and '''Mine''' would be the title for an article about mines. I've updated the rule to reflect this. --[[User:Peristarkawan|Peristarkawan]] 17:35, 31 October 2007 (EDT)

::What about skills and professions? Should we have a '''Bone carving''' (labor preference) article and a '''Bone carver''' (skill) article, or would this be redundant? I've seen both styles linked to, but tend to think that the -ing form should redirect to the -er form. Opinions? --[[User:Mechturk|Mechturk]] 03:11, 5 November 2007 (EST)

== Tutorials ==

New players are getting bogged down by the complexity at the start of their fortresses, I think we should get some "getting started" or "surviving your first winter" type tutorials up as soon as possible. --[[User:BahamutZERO|BahamutZERO]] 16:33, 31 October 2007 (EDT)
== Categories ==

I saw that the category [[:category:buildings]] had been added to category [[:category:world]]. I started to look for categories without parents and adding them to world to sortof have a list of every category. Is this good thinking? --[[User:Mizipzor|Mizipzor]] 19:19, 31 October 2007 (EDT)

:We already have a list of all categories at [[Special:Categories]], although it does include a few categories that aren't directly related to the game.
:Based upon the description of [[:Category:World]], it seems to me that most of the things that are currently in it don't really belong there. --[[User:Peristarkawan|Peristarkawan]] 19:27, 31 October 2007 (EDT)

:::[[Special:Categories]] is automatically updated by the Wiki software as soon as it detects a change. However, MediaWikis aggressively cache pages. It's also possible you're looking a client-side cached page of it. Finally, I don't see any content in that category so it's possible it's being ignored. See [[Special:Unusedcategories]] instead. --[[User:JT|JT]] 20:28, 31 October 2007 (EDT)

== Deletion ==

We now have a [[:category:deletion]], who has the power to delete pages? When are they deleted? Who make the final call? The same person that deletes them? What rules should we make regarding this? --[[User:Mizipzor|Mizipzor]] 11:57, 1 November 2007 (EDT)

:Anyone can mark a page for deletion using the <nowiki>{{del}}</nowiki> tag, however it is usually recommended to get a consensus that it's not worth keeping. Exceptions are things like spam or empty pages. The <nowiki>{{del}}</nowiki> tag just lets the admin know to delete it, ultimately it's his call to do so or not. Just ask around on the talk page first, if no one disagrees, add the tag. (Disclaimer: that's how it worked on the old wiki, the policy may change as this new wiki grows.) --[[User:Turgid Bolk|Turgid Bolk]] 13:02, 1 November 2007 (EDT)
== Water level style ==

I think we should have a standard style for talking about water level. We could say it various ways, such as "6/7 water," "water with a depth of 6," "a depth of 6 pool," or "water with a depth of six." It seems using the numeral makes it clear that we mean water depth, without adding the /7. --[[User:Turgid Bolk|Turgid Bolk]] 13:02, 1 November 2007 (EDT)

:I'm not sure. The /7 is definately unnessessary and that we should use 6 instead of six, maybe create a template to make the numberal blue/red (water/magma)? If not "Water 6" and "Magma 5" seem short, simple, correct, and understandable.--[[User:Draco18s|Draco18s]] 03:27, 2 November 2007 (EDT)

:I think "depth of 7" works wonders, bold, colored text had a bit high contrast according to my taste. In case there is either magma or water, just state it. And we should also link to a waterdepth article for those that are in need of furher explanation of the concept. Where there is a bit saying "Toady said this", what is the best way to link to the forum? Currently in magma, I've got a link to http://www.bay12games.com/cgi-local/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=7&t=001504 which shows up as [http://www.bay12games.com/cgi-local/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=7&t=001504] (not ''too'' bad). Is there a better way of doing it akin to Wikipedia with <ref>something</ref>? Maybe something like [[Template:version]] for future (but that doesn't cover the "this is how it works now" type thing. --[[User:Shagie|Shagie]] 02:17, 3 November 2007 (EDT)
== Crops categories ==

My wiki-fu is weak, but surely there is a better way to present the myriad crops than having a different category for each season and biome? [[:Category:Crops]] could at least show the seasons grouped seperate from the biomes. Are we going to put each plant in its respective biome and seasons, ''and'' in [[:Category:Crops]], or is [[List of crops]] sufficient? Just seems like there's a lot of potential for a mess here, and we need to standardize the plant pages and various categories.

Personally I like the way the old wiki did it, with some nice templates. Granted there are a lot more plants in this version, but not so much that we need 20 subcategories cluttering up the crops category. See [http://archive.dwarffortresswiki.net/index.php/Crops Crops] and [http://archive.dwarffortresswiki.net/index.php/Plump_Helmets Plump Helmets]; easy to tell what crops belong in what season. --[[User:Turgid Bolk|Turgid Bolk]] 02:52, 3 November 2007 (EDT)
=== A ===

How do we handle several rules that starts with the same character? I see that '''titles''' have been moved to '''page titles''' because of '''timelessness'''. But what about other scenarios that doesnt have an solution as easy? --[[User:Mizipzor|Mizipzor]] 07:51, 5 November 2007 (EST)

:We can handle them as they come up. In general, I think it's better practice to avoid reusing letters than to have to rename an existing rule.

:If we want to just do away with rule '''A''' at this point, that would be fine. It was only meant to be a starting point for brainstorming, and the rules haven't changed much lately. --[[User:Peristarkawan|Peristarkawan]] 11:21, 5 November 2007 (EST)

::I Call for Judgment on this statement, this would remove the backbone rule used to define this alphabetical set of rules. We could put it outside of the rules though, like a description. --[[User:Senso|Senso]] 12:24, 5 November 2007 (EST)

Although there is no exact phylum under which fish may be classified it is safe to say that anything that may be ''fished'' is a ''fish''. All fish so far discovered are edible and contain bones and other useful materials for crafts.

Soyweiser: two types of chasm - not that anyone reads the summarys... but hey...

I've had a chasm in a mountainous area near a volcano which was in fact cylindrical, not shaped like a river at all. It was basically a bore of empty space all the way to the bottom-most level, which consisted of the # chasm squares. In that respect, it looked much like a volcano bore but generally a bit smaller. There were variations in width on different levels of it as well. This led to open cave floor around it on some levels where troglodytes, iron men, giant cave swallows, and caveswallowmen frolicked about. --[[User:Janus|Janus]] 08:25, 1 November 2007 (EDT)

:Huh, how about that. They're certainly more interesting than they used to be.--[[User:Draco18s|Draco18s]] 14:54, 1 November 2007 (EDT)

:Interesting. Sounds like a magma vent minus the magma. I have a game going in a grassland a few region squares away from a volcano. When I first started the game, I got a message that part of the cavern had collapsed and it zoomed to the magma vent. The vent itself was as you describe--a roughly cylindrical sinkhole of varying widths that went all the way to the bottom. Only in my case, it was full of magma up to the surface, and at lower depths, fire imps, magma men and fire snakes could be seen (Apparently, magma is transparent.) Maybe the game treats magma vents as localized chasms full of magma? --[[User:RedKing|RedKing]] 16:43, 3 November 2007 (EDT)

:: That's probably how it was formed, using the same algorithm as a magma vent, but it does appear to be intentional. Perhaps it is indeed meant to be a dead magma vent. That same map has the main volcano magma vent a short distance away. The magma vent was of course shown on the local map when choosing the map location, but the circular chasm was not.
::As for the collapse message when starting on a map with a magma vent, that appears to be due to a bug where a body of water is generated in the middle of it. This water instantly creates a solid block of obsidian with no support, which then collapses. Magma is semi-liquid, and fireproof monsters like those you mention will swim freely through it. --[[User:Janus|Janus]] 17:06, 3 November 2007 (EDT)

Actually there are two variants of the chasm, a chasm vent/pit and a chasm/river star like chasm (encountered this one twice, and it really fucked up the level). Perhaps we should works this into the article. Perhaps we should ad screenshots. I sadly have no save with the star river like chasm anymore (abandoned those). --[[User:Soyweiser|Soyweiser]] 18:45, 7 November 2007 (EST)
