Food is anything dwarves eat to ward off starvation. The most common foods are meat, fish, crops, and gathered shrubs. Each dwarf has a preference for certain foods.

Eating
A dwarf with the "Eat" task will pick up a unit of food, often according to his or her dietary preferences, then bring it to an available table or chair for consumption. A private room will normally be chosen over a public room; for this reason, note that a dwarf who owns a table-less office but no dining room will complain about the lack of tables, even if a high-quality public dining room is available. This problem is easily solved by adding a table next to such an office-chair (like you would in a dining room). Also note that eating in a high-quality dining room does wonders for a dwarf's mood.

Storage
Food is stored in food stockpiles and can be placed in barrels and, in the case of seeds, bags. Food should be stored indoors, as it will rot if left outside for too long, rendering it inedible and your dwarves hungry.

Cooked food
Raw food can be cooked into meals at a kitchen. The wider the variety of ingredients that a meal contains, the greater the number of dwarves who will have a preference for that meal. Additionally, some foods must be cooked before they can be eaten.

A gear assembly is a machine component that is used to move power between adjacent machine components such as water wheels, windmills, axles, and other gear assemblies. This allows the transfer of vertical motion to horizontal and vice versa.

Gear assemblies require 5 units of power each.

Construction
Gears can be constructed from the build menu under Machine Components and gear. They require one mechanism to construct.

After the gear assembly has been constructed, it will automatically draw power from an adjacent power source. Further components can then be connected to the other available sides (East, West, North, South, Above, Below) of the gear assembly, and will automatically draw power from the power source via the assembly. Note that gear assemblies do not transfer power diagonally; they only work orthogonally (N-S and E-W).

In order to transfer power between z-levels with a gear assembly, you must first dig a channel, and then place the gear over the opening. Then place either another gear assembly, a vertical axle, or a machine (screw pump, etc.) on the z-level below in the same square, and power will be routed to it.

Disconnected gears
Gears can be "disconnected" by being connected to a lever, and then activating that lever. However, be warned that devices connected vertically to a linked gear may collapse when disconnected. The same is true of a horizontally connected hanging device. An example is a windmill built directly on top of a gear: in this case, disconnecting the gear via the lever will cause the windmill construction to collapse. In order to avoid this, create a second gear adjacent to the linked gear but not otherwise connected to the system; This gear will support the windmill if the linked gear is disconnected, but will not transfer power, since it only draws it from the now-disconnected gear.

Note that the above is only necessary if the windmill is entirely unsupported outside of the gear on which it rests. Windmills (and other components) which have "Stable foundation" in their q view should not collapse if a gear beneath them is disconnected.

Solidity
Gears are presumably solid, however they do not block movement in a square. Dwarves, kobolds, and other beasties have no problem walking through squares occupied by gear assemblies. It's also important to note that water can also flow freely through them.

There are several different types of machine component, all available from the Machine Components screen in the build menu. These components can be used to create complex machines. In order for the machines to operate, you must have a power source (either wind or water) of some kind. Power can be transfered to machine parts which require it by a system of axles and gear assemblies. Some machines, screw pumps for instance, can be powered by hand or hooked up to a lever.

Construction
Machine components have two basic states in which they can be built: solid base or hanging. Solid Base is just what it sounds like; the machine component has been built on solid ground, and so it has a solid base on which to rest. A hanging component is not built on solid ground, and so must be built beside an existing machine or component. Its only support comes from the adjacent component. This can be daisy-chained, so that it is possible to build machines which have only one component on solid ground, with the rest hanging out into empty space.

Possible advantages to this include protection from destruction by invading enemies (If they can't get to the machine components, they can't destroy them). However, it can be risky, as the rest of the parts will likely collapse if the component on solid ground is destroyed.

Levers can be hooked up to a machine component, causing it to "disconnect" when the lever is pulled. If a component is disconnected in this way, and is serving as the support for other machine components, those hanging components will be exploded into their basic components, as they will no longer have support.
