The numbers and colours do indeed mean quite a few different things - the first, grey, number is basically items normally, freely available to you (though e.g. including used (that is, filled) bins and barrels, worn and owned clothes (you can't control at all) and the occasional bolt in a river or on top of a tree you can't actually reach).
* items used in buildings, traps etc. (including stuff set for trade in the depot)
Sparring requires enough clear floor space inside the barracks to dodge and maneuver in; 3x3 is a safe lower limit.

When a bedroom is set as a barracks, dwarves will not claim the room when they sleep. If no beds are available, they will sleep on the floor of a barracks. If that isn't available, they will fall asleep where they stand, potentially leaving dwarves in dangerous locations. Military dwarves may be ordered to sleep in a barracks, even if they have a bedroom.

If your barracks is full of damaged, bloodstained clothes, this is because sparring dwarves have ripped them off of each other while practising their wrestling. Presently (version 28.181.40d), there seems to be no way to get rid of the clothing, short of flooding the room with magma or similarly circuitous measures.

Turnerjer: /* Layout */

The Stocks screen, accessible via the Status screen, is a careful record of your fort's entire inventory. It is managed by the bookkeeper, who periodically must update the stockpile records, depending on how quickly your fort's wealth is growing or being depleted.

Layout
The Stocks screen displays a list of product categories on the left side. Next to those categories is the total number of objects you have that fit within that category, listed first as the total number available, and then as the total number in use.

Precision
Precision determines how well your dwarfs are keeping count of all your items. Items are grouped into general categories - for instance, all hand weapons, crossbows and picks are "weapons". The biggest is typically "stones" - all stones you have mined out are included in one category, and viewable by specific type only if your level of accuracy is adequate for that number; anything less, and you will only have a rough total, no ability to view or manipulate the individual items.

The precision of the Stocks screen depends on the settings of the bookkeeper noble. (Use n s to access that screen.) Precision affects three factors - the time spent at that labor (more precision takes more time), the number of significant figures (see immediately below), and whether the Inventory is active or unavailable for a given item type (see Inventory, bottom).

There are five possible settings:

; Lowest Precision
: This is the default setting, precise only to one significant figure. It's fine for your initial embark until you feel you need the Inventory feature, below, and have time to designate a chair (perhaps in your first Dining Room, at least to start) as an office/study.
:*Any number from 0 to 9 will be exact. Inventory is available only for categories with 9 items or less.
:*A number from 10 to 99 will be rounded to the nearest 10.
:*A number from 100 to 999 will be rounded to the nearest 100.
:*A number from 1,000 to 9,999 will be rounded to the nearest 1,000.
:*A number equal to 10,000 or more will be rounded to the nearest 10,000.

; Low Precision
: This setting is precise to two significant figures. This is fine for a starting fortress, since few will have over 99 of most items, stone being the usual first exception.
:*Any number from 0 to 99 will be exact. Inventory is available only for categories with 99 items or less.
:*A number from 100 to 999 will be rounded to the nearest 10.
:*A number from 1,000 to 9,999 will be rounded to the nearest 100.
:*A number equal to 10,000 or more will be rounded to the nearest 1,000.

; Medium Precision
: This setting is precise to three significant figures. This is a good and practical level to maintain stockpile records at for an early fort, since typically stones are the only item that will number over 999 in the first years. (Note that although you have many types of stone, it is the total that matters for any one such category.)
:*Any number from 0 to 999 will be exact.
:*A number from 1,000 to 9,999 will be rounded to the nearest 10. Inventory is available only for categories with 999 items or less.
:*A number equal to 10,000 or more will be rounded to the nearest 100.

; High Precision
: This setting is precise to four significant figures, ample for most needs. This setting is most useful for managing stone (like forbidding one type entirely). Eventually other items, like food or drink, could grow to be in this range as well, depending on play style.
:*Any number from 0 to 9,999 will be exact. Inventory is available only for categories with 9,999 items or less.
:*A number equal to 10,000 or more will be rounded to the nearest 10.

; Highest Precision
: This setting is perfectly and completely precise for any number of items in any category. All stockpile records will be exact. Inventory available for all items and all categories, regardless of number.
:Maintaining stockpile records at this level starts out as a full-time job but becomes easier to maintain once that level is achieved. While this extreme level of accuracy is usually unnecessary, this is recommended as an excellent and speedy way to increase one dwarf's attributes once you can spare them. Many fortresses rotate several bookkeepers a year through to legendary status, and then on to other tasks.

If a number has been rounded, it will appear with a trailing question mark and will be displayed in brown ink instead of light grey. For instance, "20?" instead of "17". Above the lowest precision, your bookkeeper requires a meager office, and for every level of precision, will spend more time there updating the stock record.

Inventory
If you have a sufficient level of precision to count each and every item in the given category, you will see an inventory display on the right side of the screen. If you do not have enough precision, the right side of the screen will be blank, and you will not be able to see (or manipulate) each individual item in that category.

So, if you are Lowest level precision, and you have 9 weapons, you can see an itemized list of each one, and be able to forbid it, find it, melt it, etc etc from that screen. If you have 10 (or more), you will see only that you have 10? items of that general category, and not which ones.

When active, this inventory display has two modes. The default mode is a compacted view which lists objects by type and total number. It is handy to get a general idea of the number of goods you have available. The second mode is an exact view which lists each unique object or stack of objects in your fort. This display is useful for selecting individual items to forbid, melt or dump. To toggle between either of the two modes, press Tab.

In the exact mode, the items text is colour coded.

Colour
Represents
brown||produced in fort
grey||imported to fort
dark cyan||part of a building
dark purple||part of a construction, forbidden or designated for dump/melt
dark red||not owned by fort

Forbidding Stone through Inventory
Note that if you forbid a type of stone (or block) using the Inventory menu, you will also forbid every workshop and building made from that particular type of stone (or block). This is a common cause of dwarfs suddenly refusing to perform assigned tasks in workshops. Use <d,b,c> to check for forbidden workshops (or other items) and to reclaim them - use Enter to affect a rectangular area, or click with your mouse on specific items or buildings.

Presently (version 28.181.40d), there is no way to get rid of the clothing, short of flooding the room with magma or similarly circuitous measures. For the sake of tidiness, you can (H)ide the abandoned clothing by selecting it with the (k) command, and pressing (H).
I am starting to notice that my dwarves are only going to spar in the barracks two at a time regardless of size. Is this right? MikeWulf 11:01, 24 May 2008 (EDT)
:I'm looking at three pairs of sparring soldiers in my only (rather big) baracks.--Dorten 23:18, 19 June 2008 (EDT)

The 4x4 minimum size designation is not true for 33c at least. I saw multiple times my soldiers sparring in a 3x3 room with 3 pieces of furniture in it (If they tumble around while sparring it could be true though, since it was across the hall from the main big barracks). As for the "not sparring" question, I think they need to have different job names. Like wrestler and marksman, or Elite marksman and marksman (not sure about last one).
--Nonickch 13:27, 19 June 2008 (EDT)
:That's not true about needing different job names - they could never get started if that were the case, since military dwarves start off as Recruits. (Well, unless you get immigrant soldiers. But I was able to get some Swordsdwarves and Wrestlers having started them all as Recruits.) --AlexChurchill 07:03, 20 June 2008 (EDT)

:I think if you try to pair a -lets say wrestler- and a marksdwarf to spare together, it wont work, because a marksdwarf trains at the shoting range and not in meleecombate. --Spectre 14:18, 10 May 2009 (UTC)
Soldiers never use more than one barracks?
In several forts now, I've never had my soldiers use more than one barracks, even though I have >20 soldiers and two or more squads. The barracks they use is either the one I make first, or the one that is closest to the eating/partying area. Do others have this problem? -- D64 08:16, 27 July 2008 (EDT)

Sqauds travel together at all times, also sparring close to the eating/partying area is probably just conveniance, if the barracks is far away your drunken rage against another dwarf would have dimished by the time you get there.--Warlordzephyr 05:35, 10 February 2009 (EST)
Clothes littered in the Barrack
I trained a couple of wrestlers in my barrack and now there lies clothing everywhere, owned by said dwarves.
I assigned them some roomes and put a chest and a cabinet in each but they dont seem like cleaning up there mess.
Could that be because they have reached hero status und now havent the cleaning-job enabled? And if so, how do i get them do put there clothes back on? --Spectre 14:46, 10 May 2009 (UTC)

:I just read a post on the forums suggesting that there is no way to get rid of the clothes that were ripped off during wrestling practice. If you tag them as "Hidden", then at least your barracks will look neater, although the ripped, bloody, vomit-stained clothes will still be there. Fortunately, no one seems to care.

The still allows you to do two tasks:
* b Brew a drink
* e Extract plant essence

Brewing alcohol requires a brewable item (most crops from your farms as well as most gathered plants can be used) and an empty barrel. You can define which plants may be brewed from the Overall Status menu (z) under kitchen. Note that when making barrels for brewing, they will often be taken for use as food storage instead. Thus, it may be best to wait until winter, when food production drops, to produce barrels for brewing. It may also be helpful to reserve a few barrels in the stockpiles menu (p).

Every unit of plant brewed at a still produces 5 units of alcohol. A single stack of plants will be brewed in one go, and the resulting booze will be placed into a single barrel - a stack of Plump Helmet [5] will produce Dwarven Wine [25], and will only occupy a single barrel. Skilled growers, who tend to harvest larger stacks, can therefore reduce the number of barrels required to store alcohol, which in turn minimizes the required stockpile size.

Extracting plant essences is currently useful only for producing trade goods. (?) Golden salve can be extracted from Valley herbs. This requires a barrel.
