I forget-do quality mechanisms change the effectiveness of a trap? Either way, skilled mechanics are pretty useful, especially now that they do more than trapmaking.Kefkakrazy 03:36, 4 November 2007 (EST)
:Toady mentioned something about high quality mechanisms working better in traps. I've not personally tested it (and how would you test something like that?) so I am hesitant to put it in as fact, especially because I can't find the post offhand.
::I think Toady said that the quality of the mechanism was used in weapon traps like the skill of a dwarf wielding that weapon. I can't recall what effect it might have had on other types of trap, and I also can't find the relevant post. --Morlark
:The quality of a mechanism increases the damage dealt by a trap. So an exceptional mechanism is something like 2.0x more effective then a bog standard novice mechanism; that's why I use all my shoddy mechanisms for levers and linking and keep the high quality ones aside for traps. --Markavian
::I've found that the quality of a trap affects the reaction time of pressure plates. --Kjoery 16:53, 6 November 2007 (EST)

I had 2 legendary mechanics, they linked stuff no faster than the novices. --GauHelldragon 21:42, 17 November 2007 (EST)
:This may be arbritraty since legendary mechanics may get the quickness boost from stat gain. --Eagle of Fire 01:08, 18 November 2007 (EST)

I just saw one of my armorsmith/mechanics change titles from 'armorsmith' to 'mechanic' after reloading a stonefall trap. Have updated the page to say that reloading stonefall traps gives experience--I previously thought this wasn't the case. --Sowelu 23:06, 24 November 2008 (EST)

I made a hallway of crossbow loaded traps, and noticed my mechanic gaining exp from reloading them with crossbow bolts, so I added that. Yuriatayde 12:54, 30 May 2009 (UTC)

☺ A mechanic is a dwarf with a degree of skill in the mechanics job. In the game's default configuration mechanics are represented by a red civilian dwarf symbol. A dwarf with the mechanics skill enabled is capable of constructing mechanic's workshops, mechanisms and all other buildings that require mechanisms such as levers, gears, traps, and menacing spikes. They are also responsible for linking up levers or pressure plates to objects such as bridges, floodgates and other contraptions.

A dwarf will gain mechanics skill by building mechanisms in the workshop. A dwarf with a high skill in mechanics is able to construct mechanisms and link up objects faster than a novice. A dwarf with a high mechanics skill is also more likely to produce high quality mechanisms at the workshop which can be used for improving trap damage.

Building a mechanism at the mechanic's workshop is worth 30 skill points.

Mechanics also gain an unknown amount of experience from reloading stone-fall traps and Weapon traps loaded with weapons that require ammo and reloading.
