== Naming your Fortress ==

Has no effect on gameplay, but there are a lot of options in this menu (accessible by pressing {{key|F}} on the [[Starting builds|Prepare Carefully screen]]).

=== Front Compound ===

Forms the first half of your fortress's name. Choose from an extremly long [[list of words]].

Press {{key|c}} to clear a word selection--your fortress does not need ANY of these words to be chosen (i.e. a blank name) to be legal.

Press {{key|e}} to search for a word (in English), works just like the provisions search. Hitting enter will move from the type back to the search results.

=== Rear Compound ===

Forms the second half of your fortress's name, which are combined with no spaces (Foobar instead of Foo Bar).

=== Adjectives (First and Second) ===

At first glance, it appears these do nothing, but they give up to two words after your compound word (above) separated by spaces that are the adjectives to The X or Of X word choice (see below).

=== Hyphen Compound ===

Adds a third word joined by a hyphen to your The X or Of X word (below).

=== The X and Of X ===

Examples:

*Foobar The Great

*Foobar Of Death

With Adjectives and Hyphen compound:

*Foobar The Great Moral Thraal-Generals

*Foobar Of Explosive Goblin-Chunks

Zirik: Creation of Kevin's part of the Shootcommon saga

The Journal of Keep master Kevin

So here we are, the beginnings of our new life up and ready to go. The best idea we can come up with is to put me in charge... we’re screwed.

First journal entry.
26th Granite, 1062, Early Spring

This entry is late due to the huge mass of un-finished projects that were left on my lap by my predecessor. I don’t blame him though; the locals seem to find it hard to, well, do their jobs. I am pretty sure our stoneworker has been sleeping the whole time I have been on the job.

I wont let it get me down! I will finish the work and maybe even make so progress. First order is to prepare for the next traders I think.

The caravan arrived today, and so did the infestation of Raccoons. They scared away the Broker who decided now that he has work to do he needs to take a lunch, then the Raccoons chased him around the whole fortress until I activated our “honor guard” and killed them.

By this time the traders were done with us and left, silly elves who needs there harps and toys anyway.

**Note, Inod is vengeful, he made rings and things out of the raccoons that chased him.

Kittens make good food.

Journal Entry
28th Slate, 1062, Mid-Spring

I have made a discovery, we have too much room in our fortress and too few dwarves. Future rulers should do something about this.

12th Felsite, 1062, Late Spring

Immigrants have arrived, we now have a population of 10!
One of them is a much needed tanner, the others are farmers, which does not help much. I will put them to work in the quarry immediately.

25th Felsite, 1062, Late Spring

Spring has almost come to an end, and with that I am told by some random guy (who I don’t remember ever seeing arrive) that we can now support a Sheriff. I don’t think I care right now.

Additionally Ezum Nosimkib created a masterpiece, I have no idea where he put it. I think the Dwarves are hiding things from me...

Regardless I continue work on the new housing. All of our new citizens have bedrooms assigned to them.
I put the stoneworkers to work prettying up the floors in the mayors quarters. I like
smooth floors.

1st Hematite, 1062, Early Summer
Progress at last! I have begun moving our operations inside, starting with the butcher, tanner, kitchen and sweet sweet still!
Tired of the clutter I have begun “re-allocating” job skills, lets see if it helps.

I have decided on a project, I will create a new food store! I have no idea where...

ATTACK.
We were besieged by a fleet of Groundhogs today, many dwarves fled in terror. I went to resolve the issue and found all the groundhogs dead, I wish I knew who the noble dwarf was so I could make him Sheriff.

12th Malachite, 1062, Mid-Summer
More Immigrants and we are not running short on beds, we will see if they can build them fast enough to take care of the need. I think we still have enough room...

Also the new guys make the old guys look like hard working professionals.

I was happy to hear that the human traders were coming, I am more than happy to move some of our crap. So they arrive I move the good to the depot and they unload.
Which they have been doing for perhaps a month.
I just got word they are leaving soon and they are still not done unloading... I think I hate them.
Killed some foxes, hired a Sheriff thought about building a barracks, changed my mind.

The human traders left before they finished unloading their goods. They got them back in the carts crazy fast I was right. I do hate them...

15th Galena, 1062, Late Summer
Things have gotten dull around here. I hope fall is more interesting.
I am going to have to expand the living quarters soon.

And then the rains came...

6th Limestone, 1062, Early Autumn
We are up to 32 citizens we nee to expand our living quarters I hope to get the mining done on that before the end of my term.

7th Limestone, 1062, Early Autumn
Momuz Masostun withdrew from society today and locked himself in his room.

8th Limestoen, 1062, Early Autumn
Momuz Masostun just went a little crazy and claimed the Craftsdwarf shop... This had better be good

I would hate to have to build a jail for this guy...

Dwarven diplomat! Man its great to talk to someone who is worth the space they take up. He spoke of considering a trade agreement next year, I hope my successor is reading this.
Priority items are
Tanned hides
Scepters
Meat
Prepared meals
Shields/bucklers

22nd Limestone, 1062, Early Autumn
While I was cooking dinner, all of our hunters we killed, I have no idea where they were or what killed them. Visions of the murderous Elephants of Boatmurder flash through my mind, we have not seen any yet. Lets hope it stays that way.

I checked in on Momuz Masostun, he is sketching pictures of glass and a forest. I think he has lost it.

Two of the fallen were found, I still don’t know what killed them or where, at least they will receive a proper burial.

28th Sandstone, 1062, Late Autumn
Momuz has lost it, he ran from the crafting workshop screaming something about the forest in the glass threw off his clothing and locked him self in his room. I think he is dangerous so I have locked him in. Lets hope he calms down.

We found the last corpse of the fallen, I am having coffins crafted.

Took a long time to get the coffins built, the poor noble dwarves were long gone to dust before we could protect their remains, a sad day indeed.

15th Moonstone, 1062 Early Winter

GOBLINS!!!!
9 of them, I have activated our military. We are in big trouble.
The activated military men immiately took to their posts, and then ran all the way to the SE corner of the map far farm from our fort and the danger... I hate them.

Update! 16 Goblins so screwed. I am going to activate the whole town lets hope this works.

Hmm Goblins are lazier then we are, I lost a few noble dwarves who attempted to take on the horde by them selves. That did not work. But the Goblins seem content in just sitting at the top of the map. Here’s hoping they stay there till spring.

11th Opal, 1062, Mid-Winter
They didnt, in their first raid on the town we lost half our forces, don’t really have a military to speak of. I have told all of the dwarves to come inside and am going to hope the traps at the door have some luck with them.

9th Obsidian, 1062, Late Winter
Still hole up in the Fortress, I have not looked outside but I suspect that the goblins are out there... waiting.
We lost out bookkeeper. She was very good. I am sad. I hope we make it though the rest of this winter.

Spring has arrived, we live still but we are basically back where we started before I took on this job. I told you all we were screwed. I am outta here, I am going to take my chances with the Goblins.

The Journal of Zirik the Fortress Administrator

And so I find myself leading a band of dwarves into the unknown lands to establish a successful mountain home, by order of the king of the Strapping Pale Tome. The surveyors have located a suitable location within The Point of Patterns. The nearby forest should provide plenty of lumber, though I begin to suspect it may not be a very safe place, with a name like 'The Basic Peaceful Forest'. Reports tell of numerous hazardous beasts dwelling there, confirming my initial suspicions. There is a nearby brook with a much more honest name. The locals call it 'Wrathmolds'. It should provide sufficient water for the fortress as well as plentiful murderous fish. No matter. To Dwarves, danger is welcomed with open arms (and sharp axes).

I met the dwarves I will be travelling with this morning. They told me they call themselves 'The Rim of Lakes'. What this means they would not divulge, except to say 'You had to be there'. Even more perplexing is the name of our soon-to-be fortress, 'Shootcommon'. The violent connotations of the name bring back unwelcome memories of the tragedy of Boatmurdered. I was not there myself (as you can see I am still quite alive) but its tale has spread far and wide. Dark omens aside, the Rim of Lakes possess a variety of useful skills that should have us self-sufficient in no time at all.

1st Granite, 1061, Early Spring

We have arrived! The area is not nearly as forbidding as the surveyors described. The entire known population of these untamed wilds is a pair of mountain goats. Maybe the elephants will arrive later. Fortune has struck, and I begin to wonder if this is perhaps too good to be true. There is coal visible in the nearby cliffs. Not only that, there is an exposed vein of platinum higher up the mountainside. We're going to be rich!

First order of business, to set out some stockpiles in which to keep our stuff. There's a decent place up by the platinum to start digging. There we can go deeper and eventually dig out some grand halls. For now we just need bedrooms, a dining room and some workshops. The miners are off to obtain some much-needed building material with which to do all this with.

11th Granite, 1061, Early Spring

All is in order. The bedroom plans have been laid out and digging has begun. The dining room will be set up soon, but before that we need to dig some underground farms so we may start planting. A hungry dwarf is not a happy dwarf.

1st Slate, 1061, Mid-Spring

The farm has been constructed. It is accessible from the surface and once everything is moved underground we will be able to build a tunnel to it and seal off the surface entrance. We don't want our food source to be our weak point.

5th Slate, 1061, Mid-Spring

Dwarves are terrified of raccoons.

4th Felsite, 1061, Late Spring

Tun Bekomurist was digging out the underground workshop areas when his pick suddenly broke through to a vast chasm! Despite the darkness we can see there are small populations of hostile creatures lurking down there. I have ordered a wall built to block off the area so to prevent unwanted invasions.

Simultaneously, a wild cougar has appeared to the northwest. It has already eaten one of the dogs. Hopefully it won't stray to close to the camp.

9th Felsite, 1061, Late Spring

We have struck petrified wood! This is not as useful as non-petrified wood, but it is interesting. Also, some traps have been set up at the entrance in case the cougar decides to visit.

16th Felsite, 1061, Late Spring

The cougar seems to have wandered off.

1st Hematite, 1061, Early Summer

All is going well. The bedrooms are all mostly set up, and the dining room is well under way. Work has begun on the bookkeeper's office and the rooms that will eventually house the mayor, once he elects himself. Soon we will start moving the workshops underground and begin constructing defenses around the outside of the fortress. By the end of Summer we should be well prepared for... maybe a lone goblin or two.

21st Malachite, 1061, Mid-Summer

The cougar has appeared again. Fortunately, it's on the far side of the area. I don't think it will pose much of a threat to the fortress so long as it remains there.

11th Galena, 1061, Late Summer

Another raccoon has arrived, striking fear into the hearts of dwarves. All that were outside to witness the terrible beast fled up the mountain. I think I need to train some war dogs.

17th Galena, 1061, Late Summer

Finally summoning up some courage, Ezum Nosimkib the woodcutter went out and struck down the monstrous beast. No more will Shootcommon have to fear the terrible creature.
The caravan has arrived! This is our chance to trade for valuable goods. Now, if only our broker would get around to showing up at the trade depot. He seems more intent on sleeping, eating and going on break.

11th Sandstone, 1061, Mid-Autumn

The broker got out of bed! We sold a vast array of stone trinkets to the merchants in exchange for equally vast quantities of meat and cheese. This should help the dwarves through the Winter.

1st Moonstone, 1061, Early Winter

Autumn was rather uneventful. Construction has been slowed somewhat, as the dwarves are hesitant to do what they are told, especially with regard to dumping excess stone from the new kitchen area. Nevertheless, we have plenty of food and alcohol, easily enough to last through the winter.
24th Moonstone, 1061, Early Winter
A goblin child-snatcher has appeared! And a fox! Fortunately, there are no children in the fortress at the moment. Maybe the goblin will get bored and leave.
20th Opal, 1061, Mid-Winter
The traders have indicated which items they will pay more for. To the next ruler of Shootcommon, make sure to have the craftsdwarves make plenty of this stuff!

1st Granite, 1062, Early Spring
Spring has arrived! My time as fortress administrator is up, and I believe I have the place well enough setup that Shootcommon will continue to prosper well into the future.
The most interesting part of the fortress. The array of small rooms on the West is the bedroom area. The next ruler will have to complete construction. The main hall is in the centre. The stairs down lead to the forge area and offices, and the stairs up lead up to the entrance level. The Southern corridor leading to a stairway allows access to a room that was planned to be an archery range. The rooms to the East are the dining hall and kitchens. The farm can be seen South of there. The kitchen area has a few vents that lead up to the surface to prevent miasma from clouding the air.

[[Image:http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b148/Zirik/Dwarf%20Fortress/01_arrival.png]]
[[Image:http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b148/Zirik/Dwarf%20Fortress/02_coal.png]]

[[Image:http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b148/Zirik/Dwarf%20Fortress/03_chasm.png]]

[[Image:http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b148/Zirik/Dwarf%20Fortress/04_petrified_wood.png]]

[[Image:http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b148/Zirik/Dwarf%20Fortress/05_aftermath.png]]

14th Limestone, 1061, Early Autumn

[[Image:http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b148/Zirik/Dwarf%20Fortress/06_caravan.png]]

[[Image:http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b148/Zirik/Dwarf%20Fortress/07_goblin.png]]

A goblin child-snatcher has appeared! And a fox! Fortunately, there are no children in the fortress at the moment. Maybe the goblin will get bored and leave.

20th Opal, 1061, Mid-Winter

[[Image:http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b148/Zirik/Dwarf%20Fortress/08_trade.png]]

-- End of Shootcommon year 1061-1062 --

Status:
[[Image:http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b148/Zirik/Dwarf%20Fortress/09_status.png]]

Fortress lower level:
[[Image:http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b148/Zirik/Dwarf%20Fortress/Shootcommon-17-region1-1062-52.png]]
The large room in the North contains the forges and smelters. The bookkeeper's office is the small room on the West of the main corridor. The mayor's bedroom, dining room and office are under construction just East of there.

Fortress middle level:
[[Image:http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b148/Zirik/Dwarf%20Fortress/Shootcommon-18-region1-1062-52.png]]
The tops of the vents are still under construction.

Fortress entrance level:
[[Image:http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b148/Zirik/Dwarf%20Fortress/Shootcommon-19-region1-1062-52.png]]
Here you can see the various workshops and stockpiles still outside the fortress. Over time these should be moved inside.
