This article is about an older version of DF.

Once your fortress has attracted the first tier of population, production, and trade nobles, the Baron (or Baroness) will be summoned.

The Baron arrives with his/her consort, the Hammerer, and the Tax collector.

Humans and Elven diplomats will only arrive if you have a Baron, though they will meet with the highest ranking noble present in your fortress (whether the Count, Duke, or King).

The Baron is also responsible for the establishment of the royal guard and will demand one in every 20 dwarves to serve as members. Failing to do so will result in the Baron receiving an unhappy thought, though unlike in later versions, the Count and Duke do not receive this thought.

Due to a bug, unhappy thoughts about insufficient royal guards only happen for the first 3 months after arrival, rather than starting after a grace period (Bug:5844). A patch for version 0.23.130.23a can be found below which fixes this problem:
