This article is about an older version of DF.

Forbidden objects will usually not be picked up or used by dwarves, though there seem to be some exceptions.

Forbidden objects are surrounded by braces -- { } -- to signify that they are forbidden. (In-game, these braces can be difficult to distinguish from parentheses, which are used to signify that the object was manufactured outside the fortress.)

The only way an object can become forbidden is to abandon your fortress and subsequently reclaim it - in later versions (and using certain utilities), it is possible to forbid specific items at any point.

The opposite of forbid is reclaim, which removes the forbidden status of items.
