Wikipedia article

This article is about the current version of DF.
Note that some content may still need to be updated.

A medium-sized fish found in lakes and streams. They are bottom-feeders and tend to gather in groups.

Carp is a fairly common variety of large fish that is infamous among dwarves as being a vicious killer. However, they are not as dangerous now as the stories would lead you to believe. They are still capable of dragging dwarves into water1, which if there are no ramps to allow the unlucky dwarf to escape can result in them drowning. Groups of carp are considerably more dangerous, able to inflict enough wounds with their raspy sucker-mouths to cause a fully-clothed dwarf bleed out and turn the river a festive red color.

Carp may be found in anything from a river to a murky pool. While river-carp may be just as scared of your dwarves as the dwarves are of them (tending to swim away), carp found in a murky pool will often feel cornered and attack anyone who gets too close "as an act of self defense".

1: Actually, the stupid dwarves fall into the water trying to dodge carp attacks.

Advice

If carp only exist in one specific water source (say, one Murky Pool), it may be best to simply designate a non-carp-infested body of water as a water source (i, set area rectangle using enter, w) and then restrict drinking and fishing to that zone (o-z-d-f) so dwarves aren't allowed to drink/fish anywhere else. See also Activity zone article on water sources and their protection.

Trivia

  • In prior versions of the game, carp had teeth that could inflict 3 times as much damage as an unarmed dwarf's fist, and so could dispatch an unarmed and unarmored dwarf (e.g. a fisherman, or a miner going for a drink) with ease.
  • The trait of carp to attack dwarves was purely accidental. Tarn Adams made carp carnivorous and about the size of a dwarf, and when he discovered that they would attack dwarves he decided to just leave it.
Legends of terrifying carp persist from days of yore
