The militia commander is a noble who serves as the primary military leader of your fortress, and remains so unless the general migrates into the fortress alongside the monarch. They can be assigned at any point and have no room requirements. They lead a squad of up to ten soldiers. Having a commander allows one to assign militia captains in order to create more squads.

The militia commander position favors individuals with military tactics skill, which is used when squads are sent into missions. Ambusher skill is also useful for raids, where dwarves will attempt to avoid detection.
