It took me three tries to get into Dwarf Fortress, the first and second of which were me being put off by the steep learning curve and having too much [[Fun]].  I went into the third attempt with eyes open and spent over five hours reading [[Main_Page|DFWiki]] before even downloading the game, and haven't looked back since.

== Year 301 ==

-->1 Granite: Well we've finally arrived in the Land of Ankles.  The mountainhome sent us to<br />colonize a mountain named "The Finger of Busters," so maybe they have a thing for<br />body parts? I don't know.  Regardless, we're here without incident and with plenty of<br />time to dig in and get a decent fortress set up before things get really hairy out there<br />and winter sets in.

2 Granite: What was the mountainhome thinking sending us out here to carve out a new<br />fortress, for the glory of our civilization, and neglect to send anyone to MINE OUT THE<br />ROCK?  I've asked Monom and Urdim to grab the picks we brought and get to work but they<br />both shot me looks that screamed "Why the fuck do '''I''' have to do this?"

12 Granite: Top floor's mostly excavated and we've begun to tunnel straight down to the<br />core of the mountain.  Monom was needed elsewhere, so he handed the pick off to me.  I<br />don't know how the fuck to mine out rock, but I figure I'll hit this pointy end here<br />against that rock there and see what happens.

6 Slate: Mining is '''''FUN!'''''

2 Felsite: Well we finally got down to designing the noble's quarters now.  My room is<br />almost finished!  I can't wait, my OCD is starting to kick in and it doesn't help that I<br />can't actually COUNT anything that's here.  "How many wine barrels do we have?" I ask.<br />They look at me with these stone-blank faces.  I've gotta get things organized around <br />here....

13 Hematite: Tragedy NARROWLY averted today.  I sent Zazit to go build a wall to block<br />off the magma pit from the outside, mostly because I didn't want those damn [[Fire Imp]]s<br />we hear cackling down there from getting out and, ya know, setting the world on fire.<br />Right as Zazit puts up the fourth wall segment, two Imps jump out giving him barely<br />enough time to scramble back to the fort before they attack.  They wandered outside for<br />awhile and I was afraid they would give chase, or at least throw some fireballs at the<br />passing back of groundhogs and get all [[Boatmurdered]] on our asses, but one just<br />hopped back in the pipe and hopefully the other one will follow.  Chalk one up to<br />Armok.  Thanks, big guy.

3 Malachite: Big fancy bedroom floor designed.  I'm not too proud to toot my own horn<br />about this one.  It allows over 200 (that's right, TWO HUNDRED) dwarves to sleep<br />comfortably on our exactly 17 beds.  Oh, yes, I finished counting.  Counting what?<br />COUNTING EVERYTHING.<!--
