-->1 Granite: Well we've finally arrived in the Land of Ankles. The mountainhome sent us to
colonize a mountain named "The Finger of Busters," so maybe they have a thing for
body parts? I don't know. Regardless, we're here without incident and with plenty of
time to dig in and get a decent fortress set up before things get really hairy out there
and winter sets in.
+

2 Granite: What was the mountainhome thinking sending us out here to carve out a new
fortress, for the glory of our civilization, and neglect to send anyone to MINE OUT THE
ROCK? I've asked Monom and Urdim to grab the picks we brought and get to work but they
both shot me looks that screamed "Why the fuck do '''I''' have to do this?"
+
+
12 Granite: Top floor's mostly excavated and we've begun to tunnel straight down to the
core of the mountain. Monom was needed elsewhere, so he handed the pick off to me. I
don't know how the fuck to mine out rock, but I figure I'll hit this pointy end here
against that rock there and see what happens.

I ask.
They look at me with these stone-blank faces. I've gotta get things organized around
here....

13 Hematite: Tragedy NARROWLY averted today. I sent Zazit to go build a wall to block
off the magma pit from the outside, mostly because I didn't want those damn [[Fire Imp]]s
we hear cackling down there from getting out and, ya know, setting the world on fire.
Right as Zazit puts up the fourth wall segment, two Imps jump out giving him barely
enough time to scramble back to the fort before they attack. They wandered outside for
awhile and I was afraid they would give chase, or at least throw some fireballs at the
passing back of groundhogs and get all [[Boatmurdered]] on our asses, but one just
hopped back in the pipe and hopefully the other one will follow. Chalk one up to
Armok. Thanks, big guy.

3 Malachite: Big fancy bedroom floor designed. I'm not too proud to toot my own horn
about this one. It allows over 200 (that's right, TWO HUNDRED) dwarves to sleep
comfortably on our exactly 17 beds. Oh, yes, I finished counting. Counting what?
COUNTING EVERYTHING.<!--

"Hello world."[edit]

It took me three tries to get into Dwarf Fortress, the first and second of which were me being put off by the steep learning curve and having too much Fun. I went into the third attempt with eyes open and spent over five hours reading DFWiki before even downloading the game, and haven't looked back since.

I've recently begun cataloging my most recent Fortress, Suvaslòr, "Lustroustools", on a Twitter account made specifically for this purpose. If you're a twitter user, please follow @DF_Newbie and see where this fortress leads. Fortress was laid to waste by the first megabeast. I had no weapons and no chance.

Strange Strange Moods[edit]

Shameburvad, Handleseal

Skzul Kosotheral, Woodcutter, got a secretive mood with his only moodable skill as Dabbling Metal Crafter. He proceeded to claim a Mason's workshop, claimed one stone of Alunite, and proceeded to make Urmimmebzuth, "Swamour", an Alunite coffer (2400☼) and gained the Legendary Miner skill

 • [SEED:3389389538]
 • [HISTORY_SEED:1476674852]

Embark Points[edit]

I opted to go without Miners this time through, as I've found in previous fortresses that miners just create a lot of stone early that I don't need, and they're easy to train in soil.

Skills

 • Carpenter/Furnace Operator
 • Woodcutter/Herbalist
 • Mason/Mechanic
 • Thresher/Cook
 • Grower/Weaponsmith
 • Grower/Armorsmith
 • Brewer/Broker/Leader

Items

Long and short of it: 59 booze (weird numbers are for the extra barrels), a single unit of all the cheap meats plus eleven turtles (for the shells) makes 31 meat, 11 plump helmets, and enough seeds to start me off. I saved a ton by dropping both battle axes and, since I only wanted one to begin with, taking one copper bar and one charcoal instead and forging it on-site. I already had a weaponsmith and an anvil coming with me, so I saved 280 points for no loss. I brought some wood as well because I was embarking into a 6x6 that had just a few tiles that were wooded and even that was "Sparse." I didn't want to get in trouble early and be bedless. The rope is for making restraints near my entrance for war dogs. The tetrahedrite is mostly just on the hopes I get silver for training weapons. The diorite was just one stone so I could build the metalsmith's forge immediately (to do the abovementioned on-site forging).

Empty for now, placeholder for a fortress build as either screenshots or a table. I have yet to strike the earth.

28 Sandstone "The titan Bossu Xomumeslu Dabstëtso has come!" Goodie.... My army of champion wrestlers will tear his arms off. I hope.

11 dead so far including all 7 champions. The rest of my military is soon to follow....
I managed to lightly wound his second toe on his right foot and moderately wound the fourth finger of his left hand. Unfortunately my fortress fell once my military died. Note to self: equip military with weapons sooner.
