Wikipedia article

This article is about an older version of DF.
A compact offspring of horse and donkey, bred to be a beast of burden.

Mules are often used as pack animals by merchants. They can not breed, since all mules are sterile. In Dwarf Fortress, this is modeled by making all mules male, though female mules do exist in real life. For the common dwarven fortress they are nothing but living meat. Their inability to breed coupled with the fact that they cannot produce milk or yarn like other large herbivores makes them a poor choice for a meat industry They require a pasture to survive.
