This article is about an older version of DF.

Preferences are Template:Ls, Template:Ls, or objects described as being liked by a dwarf in their profile. A dwarf's preferences (and disliked vermin) tend to feature in artwork the dwarf makes more often than subjects not listed in a dwarf's profile. For example, a mason that likes Template:Ls for their haunting moos and absolutely detests Template:Ls will make statues of both. This is presumably out of love for cows and horrified fascination for bats.

Benefits to Productivity

A dwarf working with a material they like will produce higher Template:L goods. For example, a Template:L that likes olivine will generally make better Template:L mechanisms than Template:L ones. This is most important during Template:L, when individual personality profiles and skills can be best matched up according to your specifications.

Want high quality bedrooms? Make the dwarf that likes Template:Ls your Template:L. Want to build wealth absurdly fast? Make the dwarf that likes gold your Template:L. Want to outfit your military with classy armor? Template:L would be a good candidate for the job.

Value Considerations

It has been noted that preferences have an effect on how dwarves perceive the value of a Template:L and Template:L, though the exact details are not yet known. This can be both a blessing and a curse.

A mason who likes horses will often make statues of one or two horses, or even statues of themselves admiring horses. This can be great if the mason is chronically depressed: surround their bed with images they like, and they will be happier.

If your king absolutely detests large roaches, a ☼Platinum Template:L of a Template:L☼ in their bedroom will actually give them negative thoughts about their Template:L.

This phenomenon is particularly important when choosing an Template:L: although rare, some dwarves do not detest Template:L, and will therefore not do things like fill your rat-phobic Template:L's Template:L with masterfully designed images of Template:Ls.
