out of 5 marriages in my fortress so far, 5 involved a man and woman, and 5 'decided to forego marriage celebrations'.

The celebration is a party at a (probably random) dining room / zoo/ statue - both of the couple get Attend Party for a while, as do at least some other dwarves. Are you perhaps not defining anywhere for them to hold a party? -I have a fortress running on it's 14th year with very small socialising areas and a population cap of 30. I'm pretty sure neither multiple lovers nor re-marrying is an option. Dwarves, it seems, are very monogamous. -I have noticed that married couples always share a deity. Their children also worships this deity, though lovers don't share deities. I suspect the marriage means they choose one deity and worship it together and raise children in its image.
