By winter we had enough iron smelted that weapons for our group of 5 marksdwarves and 6 macedwarves had weapons (the macedwarves actually had 2 maces each) and most of their armor was made.  The project was well underway, although our architects are largely untrained, so the going is slow.  The underground river has been made safe by our marksdwarves, so further work should go unhindered.  In mid-winter a goblin ambush appeared at our front gates!  The dogs chained out front were picked on by three goblins with bows while two other goblins rushed in.  Our two marksdwarves were slow in getting to their position above the gate, but the macedwarves made it before the goblins got to our depot.  They made short work of the wrestlers and Bim (who had become a legendary woodcarver as the result of a fey mood) rushed at the marksgoblins.  They got one lucky shot at his head that somehow managed to block his airways and he suffocated to death while the marksdwarves finally got to the ramparts and opened fire.  Seeing friendly bolts enter the fray, the rest of the macedwarves charged the remaining goblins and all three were wiped out.  Unfortunately nothing could be done for Bim.

== Year Four ==

Finally in the fourth year of our residence in the Peaceful Glen I have decided to keep a more detailed diary to hopefully be able to find the patterns that are sure to emerge.

<nowiki>"Stonecrafter"</nowiki> Lórilrom withdrew from society today.  I asked around and this dwarf is already a master stonecrafter, so hopefully there will be a good outcome for this strange mood.  He has claimed a craftsdwarf's workshop and gathered a formidable list of materials.

14th:

The stonecrafter has completed work on his masterpiece Aristboshut, the Assaulted Alliance, a Lignite amulet worth 33600¤.

21st:

The elves have arrived with their caravan pack animals laden with cloth.  They had a small amount of food as well, so we traded some of our stone trade goods for the food they had and left them to rest for the journey back to their lands.

2nd:

I got word of a goblin master thief today who tried to make off with one of the children of the Peaceful Glen.  He supposedly followed one of our stonecrafters around outside until she went down into the passages dug for our well (the passages have yet to be flooded).  Once belowground, the thief pounced, but must have made a fatal error because both he and the stonecrafter ran out of the passages almost immediately.  Shortly afterwards I got the message that a baby, Obok Sigunarros, had bled to death.  Yet another unnecessary death for the fortress.

8th:

Migrants arrived today bringing our numbers from 96 up to 120.  With these new residents our fortress has become a barony with all of the nobles to run it as well as the means to create an economy.

Udil Idenlaltur celebrated his birthday and coming of age today.  One more working dwarf to fill the ranks.  Congratulations Udil!

With the arrival of a tax collector, our economy has been kickstarted.  I decided it would be prudent to set up shops for the rest of the dwarves to relax and spend their money.

8th:

Another one of our stonecrafters, Unib Rithdogik, withdrew himself from society today in the middle of an afternoon of shopping.  I suppose we'll see what results of this mood.

9th:

A human caravan arrived today.  We weren't particularly prepared for them, so we helped them set up and got them settled in with assurances that we would trade before they had to leave.  Unib started work today with only an ash log, spalerite, and demantoids.

14th:

Today was a difficult day.  It began with the completion of our second artifact of the year, Innoklâven (the Creepy Prairies) a sphalerite crown worth 42000¤.

Next was my meeting with the human merchant guild leader, which went well.  Immediately after the meeting I was approached with news of goblins on the horizon.  I went to look myself and attempted to gauge the enemy force.  The force seemed quite small at first, but seemed to grow as they grew nearer.  The final tally was 6 wrestlers, 11 spearmen, and one beak dog and they seemed to be preparing for a siege.  I ordered the dwarves inside and our marksdwarves to their guard post above the entrance.  The goblins approached over the mountain and as they approached I heard news of our marksdwarves striking them down as they approached. This news took me by surprise as the fortifications on their guard post did not face the direction of the goblins' approach.  I went up to look for myself and saw that the post had no roof!  For this siege that seemed to be a good thing, since it allowed them to fire where they could not have ordinarily, but I will have to redesign the post for future sieges.  Two spearmen had fallen by the time the goblins reached the gates where they were attacked by the war dogs chained there.  Four of the dogs were killed, but the marksdwaves continued to fire and the gates were opened to allow our macedwarves into the fight.  The humans joined in as well and in the end we ended up killing four wrestlers, four speargoblins, and the beakdog before the remaining goblins retreated.  Our only losses were the guard dogs.  This first siege experience was unexpected, mainly because I had forgotten about the danger of goblins, but future sieges will not go as well for the goblins.

Today we traded many of our stone goods to the humans for wood, food, drink, metal, and gems, partially to keep variety in our own stocks and partially to simply continue the healthy trading relationship we have in case we have needs in the future.  We also offered approximately 5000¤ of tribute as a sign of thanks for their assistance in the siege.

24th:

Today was a day of good news as Kol Numkivish and Solon Âllikot both gave birth to girls and Eral Lolorstorlut was promoted to the status of mace lord.

5th:

Another group of migrants joined us today, bringing our numbers to 132.  I still don't have the nobles' rooms completed and the count seems to be getting very unhappy about this.  I get the feeling I should hurry before he does something rash.

8th:

Stukos Litastrath was promoted to mace lord today.  It looks like the training the our military squads are doing is paying off.
