At first glance.

In real life, phyllite rocks are an early form of low-grade metamorphism of slate or other clay-mineral shales with a high content of planar minerals like mica. It too, as in dwarf fortress, is fairly unremarkable in the grand scheme of things.
+
However, it is actually one of the rarest and most beneficial materials in the game. Rivaled only by '''Adamantine''', Phyllite is the most treasured of all dwarven materials. A common misconception about its rarity occurred when players found large and frequent outcrops of Phyllite in all their generated worlds. They simply got lucky.

Using Phyllite as a material when crafting items automatically raises the resulting item's quality by one tier. More artifact items have been made from Phyllite than from any other material, but this may be a bug. Furthermore, Phyllite items have an aphrodisiac effect on dwarven citizens, leading to a higher birth rate.

Its use as a building material repels undesirable elements such as goblins, forgotten beasts, and demons. It is technically magma-safe. Upon touching magma, Phyllite quickly degrades into Adamantine, which is magma-safe.
