If there is more evidence suggesting that eggs always hatch after one season (provided they get fertilised), I suggest adding it to the article explicitely --SGdYy409Ls 20:50, 5 April 2012 (UTC)

Never favorite
It appears eggs are never the favorite food of a dwarf. --Old Ancient 21:52, 4 April 2013 (UTC)

Fertilization
Regarding this edit comment:

:"Fertilization depends on a male being present and maximum population, does NOT vary based on species"

I'm curious where this information comes from. My current fortress experienced much difficulty breeding cave crocodiles, but no trouble with several giant birds. --Loci (talk) 19:46, 31 July 2013 (UTC)

:Interesting. I didn't remember anything like that when I was breeding animals, which is why I removed the statement from the article. I wouldn't expect anything other than population to influence fertilization, but I'll re-add what I removed (and possibly do some more testing). --Lethosor (talk) 20:50, 31 July 2013 (UTC)

::It's possible I just got extremely unlucky... 8 years in a row.--Loci (talk) 19:29, 1 August 2013 (UTC)

:::Now that you mention it, I don't remember ever successfully breeding cave crocodiles when I tried (although this might have been due to hitting the livestock population cap — I'd been playing with dfhack and managed to trap over 300 wild animals). The main problem I'm encountering while testing this is the difficulty in finding cave crocodiles (in addition to trapping and taming them successfully, of course). --Lethosor (talk) 19:35, 1 August 2013 (UTC)

Worked for me
Im not sure how much value this has for everyone else, but it worked for me. I couldnt get my hen or turkey eggs fertilized even after a few years. I was giving the hen a nestbox, and it claimed it, and laid eggs. After 2 seasons I dumped the eggs and once removed she immediately laid more eggs, I let these sit for 2 seasons, and repeated this never getting any chicks. So I thought maybe I would remove the eggs twice in a row, the 2 season old eggs and the eggs that were just laid. BOOM! both of my birds gave me fertilized eggs. It seems that the eggs, are going stale inside of the hen before she lays them or something.

Egg value?
How is the value of an egg determined? I would assume it to be base value (2 for eggs) multiplied by the pet value of the crature that layed it, but I can't find a definitive answer.

: It's base value multiplied by the animal's value multiplier: one for all common domestic birds, three for alligators, 15 for rocs... --Larix (talk) 17:06, 28 May 2014 (UTC)

::So...a Giant Eagle's egg is worth the same as a Chicken egg?

:::They appear to be, although I haven't checked in-game yet. —Lethosor (talk) 19:11, 28 May 2014 (UTC)

:::Confirmed - their eggs are worth 2db each. —Lethosor (talk) 19:27, 28 May 2014 (UTC)
