Misc
Caverns are huge tunnels in the earth, they go up, down, left, right, and about anywhere else, they tend to have lots of monsters, but also mushroom farms, underground pools, and magma pools, and even the unoccasional open space. They also are normally muddied, save for special places.
Dangers
There are many, many dangerous animals in a cavern, like {please add more} trolls, giant cave swallows, and others. Also, any cavern of sufficient size will be inhabited by Giant Cave Spiders, which can be both benefit and hazard.
When should I move in?
Likely the best time is when you get your first migrant wave, and have a military. As you can handle what tries to attack, and you don't have a siege to worry about, earlier is fine, but you will likely get a bunch of dwarves killed.
