The ore of adamantine is highly valuable, to the point that the game pops up a special notification when you find it. Its discovery is both a boon and a bane; it has a massive value even unrefined, and gives a huge bonus to armor and weapons that are made from it when processed. Its high melting point means you can easily use it to build magma-safe mechanisms and floodgates, but this is not recommended due to its scarcity and value in other items.
One serious downside to mining veins of raw adamantine is that digging too deeply will eventually trigger a certain spoiler, among other things, and the fact that it only appears in relatively small quantities. Additionally, finding this material too early will cause the King (or Queen) to arrive shortly afterward, disguised as a peasant, which can be troublesome for a young fortress that is not properly equipped to satisfy high royal room value requirements, and potentially lead to his (or her) insanity.
Unlike other ores, you always get a piece of raw adamantine when you mine it out, no matter how skilled the miner is.
