Diplomats from other civilisations may arrive with, or ahead of their caravans. This appears to be a symptom of becoming a barony. More research is needed to discover if they actually play a purpose or are simply a cosmetic change.
Unlike in old versions, if your liaison is killed somehow, he or she will sometimes be replaced next year.[Verify]
If your liaison goes without meeting for a long period of time (or your mayor was taken by a Strange Mood), he or she will leave and you will get a screen informing you "Diplomat Stymied" :A diplomat has left unhappy
