Bushes are small plants that can be found all over the world in grassy areas, savanas, deserts, and mountains. Bushes can be collected by dwarves with the herbalist skill enabled in order to produce plants. Early on, bushes are an essential source of plants for brewing and cooking, and seeds for growing. Once you have enough seeds you can grow your own plants using a farm.

To collect plants, find green, healthy bushes (as apposed to dead or dried up brown ones), and designate them for plant collecting. Dwarves with the herbalist skill enabled, and little else to do, should rush out and start trying to gather plants. When an unskilled herbalist attempts to collect plants, there is a chance that nothing will be collected. There are usually plenty of plants tho, so mark a wide area and leave them to it.

Most plants collected from bushes can be brewed or cooked, some can be used as dyes. Plants that can be brewed, or cooked, produce seeds, and those seeds can be planted on out door farms. Make sure you create a stockpile for storing the collecting plants, otherwise they will be left outside to shrivel up in the sun. (A general 'food' stockpile will do, but a custom stockpile for specific plants will prevent the stockpile filling up with other junk).

A bush is a type of map tile, similar to trees and walls in that they are a state that can be designated for action, such as to be dug out or removed. They only occur naturally tend to grow up very frequently during the year.
