Machinery (including axles, gear assemblies, and screw pumps) acts differently from other constructions. It can be built in one of two states:

  • Stable Foundation - The machinery is built on top of a floor, either natural or constructed.
  • Hanging - Another piece of machinery is designated to be built on the Z-level below, and this piece of machinery is placed directly on top of it, with no floor in between. The machinery below doesn't need to finish construction before this one, but if it is canceled, this machinery will fall apart.

Unusual behavior

  • The center tile of windmills can be placed like machinery, but other machinery cannot hang above it. This may be true of water wheels as well[Verify].
    In the diagram below,
    1 should work fine,
    2 should also work, but the outside tiles (-) need floor until construction is finished,
    3 is valid, but has no connection between the machinery, and
    4 can't be placed.

  • A gear assembly which has been disconnected by a lever does not support machinery. No machinery can hang on top of it, and anything already hanging on it will fall apart. In 2 (above), disconnecting the gear assembly would dismantle the windmill and prevent another from being built until it was reconnected.
  • Machinery built on a stable foundation, as in 1 (above), sometimes has trouble transferring power to the floor below. This may be caused by the order in which the two pieces of machinery are built[Verify].
